First off, e-sports does have an entry barrier. Playing without the scrubs as you put it is difficult enough. Organized sub-professional games exist, but it isn't really any easier to get into those than it is (or rather, was, some decades ago) some kind of casual sports league. Here's a true story: In school when Halo 2 was still popular, a kid on my bus mentioned he played. I had known him but never talked to him before but I got on with him and his clan buddy. Of course I had no idea what I had just got myself into, and I was subjected to a 3 way FFA to 50 frags on Lockout as a warm up. I got 3 frags in total and again that was a warm up, their first game of the day. On top of that, 50 frags is a long match, especially for a 3 way. With the right game (high enough skill ceiling), it's totally possible for a player to utterly dominate someone else.

Esports could be a great thing. It WAS a great thing. So long as it's run and organized by the actual players and there is no financial reward or fame involved, it's an incredible thing. However, because of the insane levels of shitty childish behavior and utter faggotry that esports causes among young men there is zero chance this will ever happen. Players will tear down any good game that comes along in a heartbeat if doing so increases their individual chances of winning, and publishers have learned from this - just release the most gimped esports games possible that let the largest number of partaking goblins feel like they've won the most, and everyone will eagerly take part for that sense of winning, fake or not.
