What I mean by living weapons is the idea of having a weapon not only evolve but also assume new forms based on what the owner does with it and not vie traditional blacksmithing or dumping materials on it as if it's FFXIII all over again. I'm talking about a weapon that depending on certain conditions met you are either allowed to evolve it or it evolves on its own when said conditions are met and it affects everything : your moves, your stats, your skills, pssives, techniques, appearance, shape even the type of weapon if needed. The character has no stats or levels, just the weapon. Like going from a dinky katana to fleshy greatsword like Sould Edge in the pics depending on what you do in the story and how you fare in battle. The battle system doesn't matter, it can be turn based, strategic like Fire Emblem / FFT / Devil Survivor Overclocked / etc, a more action oriented game like Tales or Ys, with a party or completely alone. Would this idea work at all?

You either don't know what an RPG is or you forgot to mention why do you even want a living weapon in a roleplaying video game, because this sounds like a promising feature for an action video game, to remove all that retarded linear gear progression and inventory management.

Semantics aside, there is already an RPG with living weapons in it, and at least one of them evolves: Ingress' Teeth in Planescape: Torment.

Also, the only weapon worse than a sword is a rapier, swords suck. I'd rather use a sling made from my own underwear if I had nothing but a sword.

Well you would have to premake all the forms, even if it was procedural you still have to make the parts fit, but it could work. It's not really all that different from RPGs like FF7 where Materia levels up independent of the party. It gets trickier with world building, what does a living weapon want?

I had a thought for a system like this once for an MMO or other multiplayer game. Part of the draw for something like this is player customization. Something MMOs I'd seen are fucking retarded about is not making crafting actually matter. It mostly seemed like you just can create normal junk or exclusive craft-only equipment. It'd be much more interesting if you could craft individual parts of a weapon and build them out. Swapping models for weapons isn't hard, so this is just doing the exact same thing but with components, from an engine standpoint. For example, you want a sword with an iron hilt, bronze-orange blade, and a faint glowing effect on the blade. You could gather components to craft a hilt and blade made of materials of the color you want, and crafting the blade with a magic infusion or whatever that gives whatever it's crafted into a glow. This would be neat since you could make crafting actually matter more than just a marketing buzzword, since you can create a weapon tailored specifically to your design from dynamic component mixing. I don't know why it's not a thing anyone does. Crafting has a lot more potential than just being a generic item you make, and there'd be a bit more investment to the equipment created.

Halberdiers were mainly in field formations so that they could rip a careless Knight off his horse, crack him open like a crab, and shank him to death. If we went full circle, we're back at the sling.

Sword isn't the only short weapon. You can have a dagger on your belt for finishing off toppled opponents and such. For everything else an axe, a hammer or a flail would be more consistently useful. Sword doesn't excell at anything either, outside of slaughtering peasants for a speed record.

In Fable 3, your weapons change appearance depending on how you conduct yourself. For example, if you kill many skeleton enemy types, the hilt and guards of your weapons turn to bone. If you act ina moral way, your weapons are covered in blue runes. If you contract an STD, the weapon gains a poisonous aura. It's one of the few cool features of that game.

Overall I would prefer the sword for striking and stabbing in the most efficient and agile way possible. However, a mace/hammer/flail is fine too on your other hip. Also, a duelist's crossbow with a poisoned bolt hidden under the mantle of the back of your cloak >:^)

I had ideas for such a thing but that's not what I was proposing out this thread. Yes, an RPG where you create your character and go around basically creating your swords, crafting them with autistic detail like the handle, the blade, how the blade is curved, the type of metal used for the sword parts and how it's weight and durability is affected, how the weight affects the character as well etc etc, would be fucking cool. I thought a Way of the Samurai type of gameplay and character creator would fit it greatly, except instead of stats, it's all about your weapon and the styles you learn and how you use them based on the weapon you constructed.

The reason I chose RPG and the whole living weapons thing is because the possibilities of what a team with a good imagination can do is endless and you don't have to limit yourself by lurping as famous Jewtuber Shitversity or whatever, you can be as crazy and awesome as you want :

>poke people to death

>get a rapier

>start slashing bats to death

>Nothing

>keep slashing bats but now you start slashing birds as well

>Get the ability to have a whip-sword that doubles as a rapier

>Start slashing people, fire creatures and demons with that sword

>By killing demons and fire related creatures with that sword you unlocked the ability to have it be a slashing whip-sword that has flame element and can turn into a living flame you can control

>Kill a dragon, a drake, a wyvern and a flame demon with this weapon

>Congrats, now your weapon is bigger, stronger and two handed while also doing the previous crazy shit but it also has a strong anti-dragon element and looks like a dragon's wing

Sure. I don't see why not. It sounds like a fine premise to me. But if you boil it down the weapon itself is kind of unimportant, since it's the player actions that really determine how they evolve. It's totally doable, but it might be tricky figuring out exactly what kinds of actions should turn the evolution one way or another.

Actually came in this thread to post this. Fable 3 had weapons that adapted and gained properties based on what you did. So cast a lot of magic it becomes a better magical focus and so on.

Unfortunately the changes are not gradual and were locked at progress points of the game. I think the concept would be able to be done, but the developers would just have to be Not Retarded about it.

A big problem with Fable 3's system was that the weapons would usually end up looking the same, because for example, the main story would force you to fight a shitload of undead right after your sword had another part available to change, so then you were almost guaranteed to get the part for bonus damage against undead. Me and my friends all ended up with identical weapons, except for a single part, because I jewed the housing market and ended up with one part different for having a tonne of gold.

Again, sounds neat when written but in a game it would be a minor mechanic unless you go out of your way to build the entire game around it or go for an abstract experience.

Look at it this way, imagine a game where you have a really powerful sword, this sword can summon other swords, these swords can act on their own depending your fighting stance, used in conjunction with your main sword or controlled independently to perform different attacks. Not only that, these swords are controlled telepathically by your character which means they can be used while standing still or during regular attack animations.

Sounds like a neat concept right? Well it is and also this game exists, it's DMCV and the sword in question is the devil sword dante. Sure, DSD is one of the best and most versatile weapon in the game and the series but it's just one of the many weapon and mechanics you can do in said game.

The weapon morphs don't actually do anything other than effect the weapon's appearance, with the sole exception being the firearm barrel, which can give it a scatter shot effect for some possibilities. Everything else is cosmetic, and it isn't even dynamic, it's just based on what morphs you have unlocked at the time you open the corresponding upgrade chest (one is picked at random), except for the rune color which does change with your morality. Incidentally, if you don't have the appropriate level (2 for the handle, 3 for the body), even the legendary weapons have a stock appearance. It's botched overall, which is a shame as the idea isn't necessarily terrible.

A sword is a multi-purpose, self-defense weapon. Excellent for duels, excellent for backup, easy to carry.

A flail is a shit. A joke weapon that was a filed experiment. Hammers and maces are good, but swords are faster and more versatile, and you can use it as a mace if necessary. The reverse does not hold true.

I would like a game where your weapons are alive, talk to you with dialogue options and you can become best bros with them. If you get along you get stat boosts or something. You need to use violence to get what you need, they need souls to live, so it's mutual. You could be negotiating with someone, your weapon speaks up, lacks tact thus pissing off the other person, wacky hijinks ensue. They could even throw out corny one liners during combat like Duke Nukem.
