A online beta is going down this weekend and I got to play around with it a bit.

Here are my impressions so far.

>Character creator is great with a ton of options to tweaking your character. The only thing it really lacks is proportions. You can make your tits slight bigger/smaller but no flat or mega milk. Guys can get slightly wider but not ripped. You can't change facial structure much either. Still, there are plenty of hairstyles, accessories, scar/facial features, hundreds of colors/patterns, and much more to choose from. It's no Soul Calibur 6 but it's better than most games.

>Soundtrack is pretty great so far. Go Shiina is doing the music in this game and he's the guy behind God Eater, Tales of Legendia, and some Ace Combat music.

>Environments look good and seem pretty organic for a destroyed city.

>AI partner isn't shit and can keep themselves alive pretty well. However they can make the game pretty easy in certain parts (only reason why I beat the boss on the first try). Hopefully the rest of the game is harder. There's a dungeon after the demo which is hard as hell. Recommended level is 40

>Game doesn't keep a consistent framerate on the PS4. Waiting to see how it performs on PC whenever that comes.

<Combat

>You have light attack, strong attack, and a God Eater devour attack. All take up stamina with the devour attacks taking up the most. Strong attacks and devour attacks can be charged and, even if you're using the same type of weapon, it may do something different depending on what sub class of weapon it is. Like the rifle given in the tutorial has a straight shot for the strong attack while the first rifle you find has a spread shot. The devour attacks give you MP back. You can stack your MP over the maximum continuously as long you keep devouring various enemies. What devour attacks you have depends on what armor set you're using.

>Skills in this game come from classes. Each class has a bunch of passives and skills you can get from this. Magic attacks use no stamina while the physical skills do. So it's a good idea to use magic at the end of attack strings to keep up pressure. All skills have cool downs as well and your partner has unique skills that both of you can use to power up for a ton of MP. You can get skills/passives from classes and use them on other classes if you master the skill by doing certain requirements like "kill an enemy with this move". So you'll be jumping between classes plenty. EXP and money are the same currency like the Souls series. You'll be using those to level up, buy skills, upgrade items, etc.

>You can block and parry as well. Blocking nullifies around 70% of the damage and you can parry most attacks (haven't tried projectiles yet). Parrying makes you use a devour attack on the spot and you're invincible during it. Your parry window depends on what armor type you're using.

So far out of all the weapons I enjoyed the rifle/bayonet and katana the most. The bigger weapons do have some nice weight to them but they aren't as fun to use for me. I haven't gotten the last armor type yet but the claw devour has to be my favorite. Hit box for the charge attack is tiny and puts you next to the enemy with barely any stamina. However the combo attack for it is very fast and is great for knocking people down.

It's Souls but without interesting weapons and worse large mobs (they sometimes don't stay planted while they swing their weapons around sometimes and can end up turning towards you while swinging a weapon, it's Chivalry cheese all over again). Also I fucking hate God Eater, it's insultingly easy and full of awful cutscenes and characters, but this wasn't quite as bad. Definitely won't compete with even the worst Souls gameplay From has put out, though, or Nioh, unless they put more work into it.

So, how does leveling work in Code Vein exactly? Seems like nobody has thoroughly tested it. Do you just pump levels and you get random stats to go up? Do you pump levels and certain stats go up? Or do you pump levels and depending on the Blood Code you have, certain base stats go up each time, so for the character to have the corresponding ranks they want in stats (D/C/B/A etc), they have to take into consideration the codes while leveling up?

Or is it some obscure shit, like you level up and the more you get and master abilities from Blood Codes, the stronger those Blood Codes get, thus the effects they apply on your base stats become more potent etc?

From what I got it's preset, leveling up levels your base stats, Blood Code is what determines your "build", so to say.

But because of the inheriting system you can have a pretty good mixed build, nothing stops you from despite using the berserker code to also be able to use powerful spells that you already mastered, though you won't be as effective with them because the code changes up your base stats.

The good thing is that it allows for a good amount of customization even on the fly, the bad thing is that every playthrough will feel the same until you get that one code you wanted.

Thank you for clearing it up my man. I guess it's the best way to do things for this type of game they are making, since from what I saw, your Blood Codes retain their loadouts completely, as some kind of preset build you made, so a skilled player could switch blood codes on the fly so to say to deal with different situations. My only complaint so far from this seems to be that in the control customization scheme, you can't exactly re-allocate the targetting button to being a shoulder button like the old God Eater game and instead it acts like the shitty targetting from DS. Could be wrong though.

It also allows you to play with anyone regardless of level without getting carried by a friend on big dick levels that one shots everything for you, or without some dumb restrictions such as soul memory.

Instead they just lower your level down to the hosts range, you still have access to your build and all the weapons and skills will work just fine, your stats are just lowered so you don't curb stumb on everything.

I'm not sure if they also re-scale your weapons down, but I feel like levels play a big role here, at least survival wise a couple of levels make a huge difference.

Saw that you can "transform" your weapon and blood veil as well which is a fancier term for "added" bonuses and beyond the standard ones saw some interesting one like lighter weight and such. Feels like that one year did pay off. Hope it's a case of "God Eater 2-itis" where during that one year they did advance the formula but broke a lot of things as well only to fix them in 3. Wonder if in the later parts of the game they have something to make you have 8 passive abilties instead of just 4, to match the amount of actives you have.

Code Vein was announced first, I don't know why but GE3 ended up launching first. Judging by the performance issues I guess the team was and maybe still is having a rough time with the Unreal Engine.

He'll likely finish Code Vein and be done. I hope not though, GE3's OST might've been the weakest in the series but it was still consistently good.

It's a bit of a complex issue : for one it's the main guys who do Code Vein while GE3 was done out of semi-obligation and half the game was co-developed by Marvelous 1st Studio, the guys responsible for the Fate Extella games.

As for Go Shiina, turns out he went full freelance like so many composers before him. I guess that's a positive, Bandai Namco will keep using him but pidgeonhold him, given how iconic his tracks are. Wonder if he'll be in future Tales games though, his tracks in Zestiria where the best thing about the entire game.

Well, that answers how difficult the game will be and I guess Blade Bearer gave us the answer. Playing with half an erection is quite challenging.

One thing I forgot to ask, did anybody try the various dodges based on mobility, blood code and weapon combinations? Because I know the ranger does a weird floaty thing with its dodging if its equiped with a bayonet but I haven't seen people try the "fast" mobility dodges. Unless that was it because for the Ranger the bayonets give a fast mobility stats.

The ranger has a active skill that gives you a teleporting roll. If you are using a weapon that gives you quick mobility, then you can have those mist dashes. That depends on your armor and class though.

Another thing I noticed is that certain weapons block much better than others. Big weapons reduce damage to stamina and health by like 90% while the fast ones reduce it by 50-60%. You can tank pretty well with them. Just don't expect to be casting spells a lot. Smaller/fast weapons get you MP really fast. Big weapons really help you stun enemies. If you go with the ranger class, the teleport dash helps you against unblockable moves and getting close the enemy quickly to make up for the lack of spells.

Rifle w/ bayonet, long sword, buster sword, hammer, polearm and I think there's one more. Armor types are claw, spike, hounds, and tail. Honestly the weapons that feel the most fun and unique are the rifle and hammer. Everything else is pretty standard. Sadly, they aren't nearly as fun as their God Eater counterparts. The polearm probably being the most boring one.

If you mean solo, and I mean solo as in "no AI partner", you can definitely play it that way, you are never forced to have some one with you, be it online or offline.

Though, at least from the Beta Test area, many encounters and even bosses seem to require you to bring your partner, they throw a lot more enemies at you than in regular souls game because they expect you to divide and conquer with your AI partner, they do a pretty good job staying alive and dealing with enemies on their own, and if your hp reaches 0 they will, around 95% of the times get you back up if possible. There's almost no reason to not have your partner around with you given that they are very useful at staggering bosses and supporting you, unless you're going for a challenge run. You also get access to special buffs that are exclusive to your partner.

One time I got ambushed with some dogs and a big elite type enemy with a greatsword, Yakuno focused on him while I dealt with the dogs, as soon as I deal with them I turn to help Yakuno only to see him deal the killing blow all by himself, this was during the time that I was still underleveled in the Network Test area, I don't think I even saw his health go down.

Another bit that I find very amusing is that if there's a ranged enemy firing at you, your partner will block the bullets for you, you can then use this to simply take him out with magic or firing a rifle shot over your partners head.

They aren't Dark Souls level of companions, they are very solid throughout, the only partner that I felt was a bit on the weak side was Mia, because she has the lowest health pool of them all, therefor anything that hits her will bring her down. but Yakuno and Louis are very solid.

So not only did they lift several entire animations (especially among enemies) from the Souls games but they also wholesale took concepts from the series. Okay. At least it explains why enemies respawn after you rest at bonfires the flower things, unlike in Sekiro where there is NO reason these generic human enemies just pop back into existance when you rest at the bonfires statue things.

I will say though that the gameplay

SUCKS

Speed is everything in a Souls game, speed triumphs over blocking, helps determine invincibility frames for rolling and is intrinsic to stamina management. But in this game almost everything is SLOW. Enemies are slow, your weapons are slow–even the single handed swords are SLOW. The only weapon not painfully slow is the Queenslayer, but guess what? The idiots didn't tool the game to be receptive to such a thing. The only weapon that swings like it would in real life, the only weapon that swings like a proper single-handed blade, barely does a single sliver of chip damage on the first boss. Go screw. Go screw yourself.

Except for how everything, especially the bosses, are designed with the "AI partner" design philosophy in mind. Yes you DO need to have an AI partner because unless you're overleveled the entire game is made with the expectation.

When you go fight Father Gascoine Oliver the AP and HP of the enemy is so bloated you'd never be able to do it on your own, hence why they FORCE you to have a partner, even if you rejected his offer to join earlier in the dungeon.

The values chaning in the final game isn't a thing I'm worried about, they said that the dungeon after you finish the story segment the demo gives you, it's supposed to be "special" and thus you have to overlevel and see all that for yourself. But there are people complaining about soloing fucking Oliver which is laughable beyond reason.

The one thing that annoys me greatly is how a lot of the weapons follow the ultra gay "moveset" SoulsBorne-Kiro uses of repeating attacks instead of combo strings like Nioh, despite the stamina use. I'd vastly fucking prefer that since the way you could weave combos in God Eater allowed for some pretty interesting ways to poke and bamboozle enemies with unexpected weakness like using slashing attacks to stun an enemy and then wanting to do pokes with your short sword to get that sweet piercing damage the enemies legs are weak to. So you do the first two slashes that come out ultra fast and while the enemy is dazed you use the strong attack which is thrusts and now you skipped the two slow start thrust and went to the two fast thrusts, wrecking the enemies legs and whatever. That is infinitely more preferable and less stilted, even at slower speeds and the hammer movesets on GE2 for the PSP showed it.

Yet I was able to beat the first phase of the Blade Bearer without a partner while underleveled. With some more practice I can get the second phase down as well. That's like saying you need Tarkus to defeat the Iron Golem in Dark Souls.

Once you get the rhythm of the game it starts feeling a lot like God Eater. Applying pressure with physical attacks and using spells to deal big damage when you're out of stamina. Spells have a lot of stopping power to make up for those using weak weapons. Weak/fast weapons allow you to gain blood very quickly.
