Alternatively, Gateways are a thing and the game's meant more for interactions with several crewmembers rather than playing alone. The game outright doesn't work if you don't rely on others for a lot of shit.

Learning curve isn't a difficulty curve. Stop that. D2 failed for multiple reasons. The learning curve, as small as it is, meant people who've never played before were dealing with basic questions about how to play and how to make their build while the experienced players were speedrunning to Baal. Those who've played before were also divided into those who got in early and took advantage of the EXP grind zone, and those who didn't. Rather than follow them and be carried, we ended up with multiple gamerooms running at the same time. Of course, if the people speedrunning to Baal would just bother to remake the game so the new players could take advantage of the EXP zone like they did, then the group would have stayed together a bit more. That problem could have been solved, but the only way to solve the learning curve turning off new players would be to have picked a game without a learning curve.
Short of FPS games, there are very few games that work well with pick up and play gameplay.

I'll like to add that during my Durand project, every little thing went wrong from MoMMI's/Borgs to spacing my mech too a blob eating it and random people breaking into my robotics lab and fucking me over.
it was only after disassembling all of robotics and moving into the hidden maint room near engineering that I got my Durand in working order.
I also think one of the admins played a Duran Duran song (hungry like the wolf) when the blob ate it.
Then someone taught me how to make bombs and I got my revenge on the station multiple times with a 66plas 33oxy mix

You can't really in RP if you've signed a contract, it makes to a sort of soft-antag where you don't really have any objectives but the devil owns your soul. So while you don't have to do what he says the worst you can do to him in my opinion is ignore him. Unsigned crew can probably shoot him but I would make that security's job.

Lawyer/HoP can remove devil contracts by hitting the person affected with their original NT contract, avaible in the lockers and constantly resupplied via bluespace. Why does this work? Well because NT bought your soul before the devil did, you're just reminding the crew about it.
Curator can find out the banes and ritual to exorcise a demon, granted if he somehow finds out the devil's name. Each contract has to be signed with the true devil's name

Had a devil round last night, the devil disguised in human flesh comes up to me and offers all access. Immediately hands me a burning contract and says i just need to sign, i drop it and nope the fuck out of there. He follows me and keeps saying i forgot to sign for like 10 minutes as i gather stuff i need to leave the station. Left for space and safely evaced on the white ship as the station gets raped by the devils.
There was a previous devil round where an invisible devil asked me to touch him and then got upset and kept complaining to me as i ran away about how sin touch takes like 5 minutes or something. Turned out it was the host that time and i gave him shit about how i thought erp was bannable.

Signing contracts gives benefits for you, it isn't all just empowering the devil. Your soul doesn't necessairly leave your body either, at least not until the devil is at full power, and you can be rescued by a Lawyer or HoP with an NT contract should you want to. Infact, you HAVE to purchase contracts with the devil to know its true name, so that he can be banished by information extracted with the Codex Gigas, that only the Curator can read without getting misinformation.
Devil is relatively tame compared to other gamemodes and it's more intended towards an RP focus rather than a combat one. Devils don't really have attack abilities except the Pitchfork, which they don't get until they transform into a lizard, and even then it's not that deadly.
Sure, the devil is "immortal" but he isn't as much of a threat towards the station unlike, say, a Blood Cult or a Wizard. It's more about trust given that contracts don't really put you in any obligation to follow the Devil's will or goals, and doesn't make you an antag either.
That said, the contract mechanics are a bit fudged and the host has complained about this, he said he's gonna rework devil later on if he gets someone to rebalance it.

Most of the time, it's on the lowside of 15-18 people. Just enough to get the second tier of gamemodes rolling. Gamenight bumped it to 21-26 during the weekend. Rounds tend to be chill regardless, very rarely you get some jackass releasing tesla or being a mad bomber to doom the station.
