I warned them in their forums years ago to not partner with EA, and one of the devs replied saying, essentially: "it'll be fine".
Wish I could laugh in his face after seeing how everything went down.
It's not provable, but I'm positive that EA undermined TF2 on purpose with the intention of crashing their company value in order to buy them out for pennies on the dollar. I also imagine that a lot of the core issues with TF1 were due to EA pressure to release the game.
The really sad part is that TF1 was a really well optimized game on pc, it ran like butter and the net code was really fucking good. Just a shame about everything else that went wrong with the first game. By the time TF2 came out it was clear EA wasnt holding their end of the bargain.

After the launch of the game, the devs didn't understand why the players were asking for more weapons and loot. To them the game was all about looting cosmetics (vinyls and textures for the Javelins), not getting better and awesome weapons.
