Naw, that kind of talk didn't really start until the run-up to the PS2 that I remember, and even then it was only a smoke-screen to skirt European import taxes on consumer electronics. They put a big emphasis on the PS2 having a hard drive and operating system, and promised features like file and internet browsing - but at the end of the day the Linux kit was just kind of tossed out there out of obligation and then forgotten, along with the HDD for the most part. And that's why Microsoft is in the game. Bill bought their bullshit story made up for tax evasion purposes and considered them a threat to Windows. Nintendo could fail from oversaturation and low quality, similar to what was happening to Star Wars for a bit and hopefully continues. Though they seem to be smarter about that. Microsoft, I'll disagree with you. Despite the memes, the Xbone probably sold at least 40 million units. Not being number one doesn't mean you're a failure. Keep in mind, last gen, the PS3 sold close to 80 million units and it took last place. So Microsoft has made money. I'm sure Xbox Live and Gamepass has contributed heavily to that. It's clear that their focus is not "we want people to play games on our console", but rather "we want people to play games on our ecosystem", meaning Xbox, Windows 10, streaming, whatever it may be. They don't even consider Nintendo a competitor, if that Cuphead port is anything to go by. That, and despite being "dead', "on suicide watch", or whatever else everyone's been saying, they were scooping up game studios last E3, and had arguably one of the best shows that year. Either they're already making money, which I suspect is the case, or they believe that they CAN make money, which they can, if 360 is anything to go by.

Sony's in the best position to fail, simply because they have 20 divisions worth of bleeding and money laundering, and two divisions making any money. A failed console generation (and I mean failed, not PS3-type loss) would demand a restructuring, a closure of several divisions at least. Here's hoping, though I have my own worries about that too. Who's taking their place? It's not gonna be Sega or SNK and anons should stop pretending. The two big ones now are Google and Apple, though Apple's focus seems more on their own phones than anything. Google gaining ground in the industry is pretty much the worst option, which is why it's going to happen, of course.
