I think the main issue with trying to make caveman game, is that we're smarter than cavemen so the game kind of breaks from that point forward.

I generally don't like that Tolkien's made-up race (orcs) is now considered a distinct separate race from goblins. Because that's basically what orcs are and always have been. Buff goblins, and nothing will convince me otherwise.

In universe it's just a language issue, though I don't think that was ever explained in the book itself but rather an interview however many years later. Makes sense though considering how often he liked to pull that stuff it shouldn't be a surprise. What is a surprise, though, is how of all the things people ape from LOTR that one thing is hardly ever done. You're almost correct. If two individuals can breed and produce FERTILE offspring, they're considered to be of the same species. I think we should add to that definition, that x% of the offspring must be fertile to eliminate very rare instances of fertile hybrids. This is of course, a more accurate approach but also more difficult, most species are defined using taxonomy.

Neanderthals were very likely equally or more intelligent than homo sapians. The difference was one of "longing". It's a uniquely human trait to be restless and curious, to build a shitty little boat and go sailing off into the open ocean to adventure (and likely death) to see what's out there. It's not a desire; it's a compulsion, a need - less a personality trait and more a species trait, like having high stamina or having opposable thumbs. So while a Neanderthal would be perfectly fine with what they had in their little corner of Europe, humans were not; so humans spread to every corner of the globe in short order: every continent, every landmass, every piddly little fucking island thousands of miles of empty sea from the last, on little canoes without maps or compasses or sails or engines. Call it a compulsion or maybe just "insanity", but when the climate of Europe changed over the eons, Neanderthals went extinct while the humans who lived everywhere survived.

Don't even get me fucking started with taxonomy. It's a clusterfuck because MOST described species were described and classified before DNA was even known to exist, based entirely on the outward appearance of animals. This lead to such massive clusterfucks as all fox-like animals being considered foxes (maned wolves aren't even close, and grey foxes are an ancient genus completely different from red foxes), and red pandas being considered BEARS, of all things; and tanukis (raccoon dogs) are a hell of a lot closer to dogs than they are to raccoons. Sorting out these messes with DNA means that old classifications are slowly altered, but sometimes this isn't possible because it would involve such a shakeup of the established order that it would be literally re-writing the science books. Stuff like when they discover a new type of lifeform that is so different from both bacteria and animalia that they almost have to create an entirely new and unprecedented level of classification above Kingdom to shove them into, hence Domain.

Because of this, is perfectly normal to find out that a group of birds that have differing plumage might actually belong to the same species. It's one thing if all you have to do is append a species with a sub-species moniker (as hilarious as this becomes if a species specific epithet ends up the same so it's just doubled over, as homo sapiens sapiens) or switch a species to a different sub-species (as when the dog, canis familiaris became a wolf sub-species: canis lupus familiaris). It's something else entirely when you have to invent whole new genii or even orders, and start taking hedge clippers to the Tree of Life. Scientists are loathe to make drastic changes like that, even if new evidence supports doing so.

But seriously, the difference between different races of humans aren't sufficient to describe them as separate species or even sub-species. To take an example from domesticated dogs. Everyone probably knows what a Great Dane looks like. Well, you probably don't know that they can actually vary quite significantly regionally; Danes from America are taller and skinnier, while Danes from Europe tend to be shorter and stockier with fat heads and long jowls (and if not being actually so, certainly look stupider). We say that those have a lot more Mastiff in them, which is a simplification but whatever. To an untrained eye, two of them side-by-side would appear to be differing dog breeds, but they are not. This is about the level of difference between, say, caucasian and negro humans, which in a dog isn't even a difference between breeds, to say nothing of sub-species (which would be the difference between a Great Dane and a Grey Wolf).
