OoT Link went on to Majora's Mask and eventually bound his spirit with the Earth to train future heroes (Twilight Princess)
Nintendo did have a number of games planned in which he would continue searching for Navi, but nothing came of it

in LttP, in the desert there is an outlined area that looks like an octopus. In Skyward Sword the desert area used to be an ocean
the 12 issue LttP comic by Shotaro Ishinomori (Cyborg 009) contains a ton of ideas that were used in later Zelda games. Link has a mask to disguise himself as a monster, the moon has a scary face in the dark world, and he has a fairy companion (named Ephemeralda)
there was to be a third Zelda game on NES/SFC in which Link is joined by two others, including a fairy. The player would have to switch between them to use their individual abilities. The game was delayed so as to not coincide with Dragon Quest 4's release, and eventually either cancelled outright or retooled into LttP.
Capcom wanted to make a 3rd Oracle game but Nintendo decided against it. As a nod to this unfulfilled desire, in Minish Cap you can fuse kinstones to give Din and Nayru their own houses, but Farore gets left in the cold.

The original Link is also the best Link, followed closely by Oracles Link. He got to smooch Zelda (the original Zelda from the Sleeping Beauty version of the Hyrule Fantasy, not Skyward Sword Zelda) behind the curtain at the end of Zelda II.
I'm still mad they retconned the reason the series is named "The Legend of Zelda". It was such a good device. And it still would have allowed them to go further back in time with each iteration, with each version getting slightly more advanced technologically before Ganon's warfare slowly breaks down Hyrule into a medieval society from the high-magic/magitek shit we see remnants of in BOTW.

I actually had a similar idea, though it played out differently, focusing on the tragedy of brothers being forced to fight because of per-determined fates, and Ganondorf forcing an unwilling Link to deal the final death blow. I've never been a big fan of "destiny" determining the hero, so the idea of turning it on its head and making it something that the agents don't want to partake in but still have to accept is appealing to me.

Unpopular opinion but I liked Skyward Sword link the best. He has a less messy TP look, with chainmail and an nonpatchy tunic. his personality is meant to be dopey throughout the game up until the final boss, and his design reflected that in his baggy pants and animations. the game might not have been the greatest zelda game, but it did have the best link.
He has the best progression too, starting as a sleepy failure and ending as an ultra Chad that does spinning backflips on demise.
