Bigger issue is you're playing the NES version. The SNES version with English patch or Game Boy Color ports are far more managable AND they have the sequel bundled with it

Are you playing the NES version or the GBC/SNES version? The remake has less grind, items are cheaper or enemies drop more money, I can't remember which and levels don't require so much xp, I think. Play the SNES version with the English patch if you can.

Not hard, just grind-heavy. Hell, the remakes bump the stats of the 2 bosses; it just doesn't take hours fighting the same enemies to afford a better stick.

i love me some arcade difficulty games, but early rpgs were essentially just grindlocked. it has less to do with difficulty and more to do with how long you can spend fighting the same 2 enemies so you can fight the next 2 enemies.

Dragon Quest/Warrior 2 has difficulty you can't grind your way around. Like Silver Batboons near the end of the game that can kill a character with a spell or the Gold ones in the same area that can wipe the entire party by sacrificing themselves.

>far more manageable
There are improvements to them, but the GBC ports tone down the difficulty too much with the stat boosting seeds and item bank. The item bank was a welcome addition to later DQ games because you had a lot more key items that you would need later. DQ1 does not need an item bank. The GBC port also suffers from memory limitations that make a lot of the enemy names retarded truncated versions. Last but not least the Dragon Warrior on NES has a lot more character with its Elizabethan language that sets the mood of a medieval adventure better than contemporary english. Only retarded niggers complain about being unable to read thees and thous.
