Its an attempt at the sub-sub-genre of 'Rustbelt Gothic' brought to videogames and kind of falling apart by the end. Its unintentionally a thesis statement on why Trump won the US presidency for the most part believe it or not.

You have the American rustbelt in its northern middle states. Former bastions of American industry and production. While the lower states were the breadbaskets and the coasts were the lumber this was the steel industry, the automotive industry and the coal mining industry. At its peak it was boom towns where the living was cheap and income was only increasing. The American Dream come to life. For a few decades at least.

But now those days are gone. The industry is outsourced to china. Decaying factories dot the hillsides, unused for decades like a carcass left to rot in the baking sun. Small businesses move out, nothing moves in and the only store in down doing well is the pawn shop. The younger people move on, tired of hearing from bitter boomers who are actually right when they say it was better in their day because it objectively was, but with brain drain occuring and the young moving out after in turn being embittered by the boomers repeatedly telling them how shitty things are now the towns are left to die. Boom towns gone bust connected by roads lined with dead grass, collapsing old homes and dead strip malls killed off long before Amazon got the chance.

In real life they got significance again when Hillary said "and i'll close the coal mines!" and half a dozen ignored states stirred after decades of decay as the competitor promised to keep them, their soul lifeblood left, open and working.

In the game the boomers sacrifice the young to keep the town going. Its literal lifeblood they consume the lives of the young just to try and keep their own dead and dying dreams a selfish reality. A barely subtle metaphor for life in the rustbelt from the eyes of the millenials. Meanwhile their own complaining is leading to the zoomer generation to be even more conservative as the "fuck you DAD i'm not like you!" pendulum swings in the other direction.

Personally from the outside perspective i find the bleak romantacism of the setting charming and the feelings understandable but while the characters and music in NitW's is great it feels like 70% in they ran out of ideas and just gave up.

This game is a textbook case of too much rising action and virtually no falling action. Everything happens at a rapid pace after the climax of the story. Which is why everyone says it has no ending. If the team had the balls then what should've happened after the cultists pressganged you is the rest of the game putting you through their cult training. Your goal from there is coming up with a covert plan to fuck them hard without them knowing entirely what you are up to. The game is basically a critique on the dependency on big business, the effect it has on a town (specifically the rust belt in this case, as it is the most effected area of the country now that businesses have dipped out), and the troubles the young generation has with an older generation chasing a past that wasn't nearly as glorious as they think. And, in turn, stifling their kids and shafting people who can't get behind being absorbed by the machine. It's a bit heavy handed in parts when it goes all "muh capitalism is the evil here" but the comfy hanging out and socializing between Mae's friends has made it a favorite of mine in terms of storygames. It makes a nice point on the side of businesses foregoing doing business in an area do to OSHA style safety regulations, the benefits of old school unions, etc. The ending is a bit disjointed but the majority of the game is worth playing if you come from a kind of old steel town (like myself) or mining town like the game depicts.
