I was thinking about getting back into MWO but my Atlas is probably shit and it's gonna take forever to grind up to a Dire Wolf.

I truly enjoy the combat in that game, problem is your teams success seems to mostly be predicated on whether there is a guy barking out NATO alphabet letters so people know who to target, and I don't want to join a unit.

You can, and it's just as annoying as in tabletop. You should use a small fast Mech because size really matters in this game. An Atlas can't even aim at a Commando if it is close enough because it is simply too fucking tall. Competent teams usually guard their assault Mechs for this reason.

I quit over a year ago but when I did I had an Atlas with such an obscene alpha strike out to around 200m that I was coring Heavy mechs with one burst and Assaults with two at absolute most, and with every single burst you were guaranteed to blow off at least one but often two limbs.

V is shit, VD is an improvement but make sure you watch gameplay prior to playing as it as V/VD is very different from any AC before it. It really limits your customization because of the rock paper scissors way armor and weapons work. It doesn't help that each weapon type is very different, which may mean you like a weapon but it is dog shit when you want to use it. Grunt variety is shit as well, most of the budget got spent on either bosses, or making multiplayer.

Armored Core 4 is fine if you get it cheap, if they ever packaged the two, I'd say it is a good deal. It is extremely lacking in content compared to the PS2 games, what is there is fine, though, and a lot of common enemies are still a decent threat. 4A is a good game, but I would not call it the best in the series.

It's less like even that and more like an arcade shooter themed around BattleTech. If you ever played the MechWarrior 3030 game on SNES which is a blatant clone of the Desert Strike/Jungle Strike/Soviet Strike series, it's a lot like that from a third person perspective. 2 adds fun battle armor and Mech jacking mechanics (fun, even if it annihilates the lore) as well as stuff like cloaking for the Raven.

There is a cheeki breeki repack of the game out there which includes everything set up with its own custom launcher, I highly recommend that version as it removes most of the effort. You may have to look for a "Mechwarrior Quadrology" or "Anthology."

If that fails, play the DOS version. It's the easiest version of the game to get running and most of the textures added in the Titty Edition look like trash anyway. You should be able to run it in DOSBox with a non-obnoxious amount of tweaking.

This game came out in a dark period of backwards compatibility because everyone was trying to figure out how to make decent 3D engines without paying John Carmack or Epic huge sums of money for an idTech or Unreal license. All I can say is good luck and you'll have to look around for your specific issues.

Thanks, I really appreciate it. I'll check all of that out. I do intend on getting that steel battalion controller but it'll likely be months to years before I find someone dumb enough to sell it for cheap so it's on the backburner.
