No, it's roleplaying. The examples you posted are all written in-character.
There's nothing wrong with keeping notes. In newer games based around quest markers, in-game journal entries are useless if you turn them off, so you'd need to rely on potentially non-repeatable dialogue to know what to do. Then again, sometimes the dialogue doesn't tell you either. And in older games that held your hand less, notes could also be useful for keeping track of information, unmarked quests, and so on.
It's not a huge leap to go from the in-game journal to a physical one.

You might like Miasmata, it has an in-game map but it doesn't show your location on it nor does it auto-fill. You have to use landmarks to create the map as you play. Game hates ATI cards though, so if you have one forget it. also it's mostly a walking sim other than the map making.

Interesting. When WoW was in beta, the same idea was put into place, but Blizzard swapped it with a rested bonus system instead due to feedback. <story time
In the first DLC of TeS3, Tribunal, it's not uncommon to find goblins, infesting the tunnels and sewers under Mournhold. You come quickly to learn that the assassin guild was using these goblins for their own dirty purposes, when you fall in a trap hole and next to a skeleton you find the diary of a sailor, describing how this poor deckhand got scammed out of his money, and thrown in a pit with the green hideous beasts. He writes in fear as he feels the creatures growing more and more insistent, as their hunger grew, and asks for one last desire, to bury his body facing the sea.
Later in the dungeon, you can find what appears to be the rest of the crew, mostly in nook and crannies, died to an unknown but imaginable death.
I gathered all their bone dust, and traveled to the farthest island south of the continent, leaving them all an offering, a token of pity to their horrible fate.

You have to understand that people that do that are faux nerds and gamers that only play games (or pretend to at least) because it's the currently hip thing to do. They're NPCs, empty shells that looks like humans that have no identity of their own and no driving passions, their sole purpose in life is to be praised by their equally fake and vapid peers.

When I first played Oblivion, I tried turning off all the waypoints, map, etc and navigating the world based on my own memory of landmarks, and actually reading the road signs, because I thought following an on-screen GPS was too easy. I got a notebook to hand-draw a map in.
It was still too easy.
