There actually was an attempt at that kind of hack many years ago on pre-exodus 4chan. Pretty fun but didn't go that far. There was this particularly well-made level based on Castlevania which makes me wish I wish I still had the "completed" rom.

What games even have hacking tools that are as comprehensive as the SMW ones? I only know of Earthbound and SMRPG. But SMW has a lot of assembly patches you can include in your hacks too, so you could practically make it a completely different kind of platformer without having to write assembly yourself, from what I understand. I haven't done a lot of research on it though, just skimmed smwcentral.
