A good IP doesn't have to end forever when its creator dies or no longer wants to be involved. It could still continue on in the hands of new devs who are capable successors. And Nintendo currently still has many talented people making many great games today.
Besides, couldn't we at least get 3d remakes for Mother 1-3 to end this 13 year long drought? I keep looking at other remakes like Link's Awakening (namely how its character designs fit Mother's simplistic artstyle so well) and wondering about the untapped potential for Mother 4 or remakes of 1-3.

Sorry, life sucks a bit today. Not gonna blogpost about it though. Anyway, if we're talking untertaint: all of the people that champion it a masterpiece have never played any of the games that it cribbed from.

That said, it's probably the only game that has all of the elements arranged together in this specific arrangement. I enjoyed my first playthrough well enough and Tubby is at the very least a decent composer, though I was aware of that because of homosuck from my depression days where a friend got me into it and using tumblr. I also liked how enemies would combine patterns if you fought them together. It wasn't a huge thing but it tickled my autism.
But on topic. Mother 2 is a distinctly charming experience. It's not really all that great but the excellent sound design (the ost and the crunchy sound effects) and colorful world, with a fair bit of openness in world design, make it extremely memorable.
Mother 3 ditches the openness to tell a much more direct story. In some ways that's a bad thing, in some ways good. The battle system is far more interesting, even if the only real addition is the music-based combos.
Personally, I'm not a huge fan of JRPG's. They aren't usually RPG's and I hate non-interactive battles most of the time, especially if there's no strategy other than "use x ability on y enemy". The exception to these are the games that really sell me on the feeling of the game, EarthBound being a keen dose of childish imagination and adventure.
