So aside from today being "so fahnny liars day" its also the japanese fiscal turnover and Square Enix is putting their plan into action to undo the damage from the 130 million dollar loss they had last year on account of the nightmare that was FFXV's "jrpg as a service" shitshow and Kingdom Hearts 3 being a damp squib everyone forgot about in a week.
Aside from recruiting for the 7 remake and putting a fucking 4th co-director in place to try and get any final product out of nomura before the end of the ps5's lifespan (they wont, this games never coming out) they also announced something for the team/inhouse studio behind FFXIV's A Realm Reborn.
Naoki Yoshida/Yoshi P has hinted that the expansion after Stormblood would be his last as creative director and he would start working on something else. Now Shadowbringers is in the bug fixing stage and like 3 months from release SE has turned their studio into 'Development Division 3' and Yoshi P is now leading a team working on a "big budget rpg in an existing IP". So unless he's assuming total control to do whatever the fuck he wants and making Vagrant Story 2 it seems safe to assume, considering every other team is busy and nobody is already working on it, that Yoshi P is making Final Fantasy XVI and the image shown suggests a return to the airship and light steampunk -before gen soy ruined the idea- style of earlier pre 21st century FF games.
What do you think of this? He already saved the brand once after the infamous 'Decade of Lightning' ruined the brands entire last gen outings and then the absolute burning trash fire of XV arguably did even more damage than XIII did. As the only consistently successful creative director left at the company have they just given him free reign to make the FF dream game he always wanted to make?

Essentially the problems all go back to the 10th anniversary of Final Fantasy VII. The at the time CEO said "the future of our company is to exploit our brands to their fullest potential, and the future is mobile gaming". Which meant trying to make shared universes starting with 7. Its why we got shit like Crisis Core, Dirge of Cerberus and the jp only mobile games starring the Turks.
Then he wanted every Final Fantasy to be a shared universe and as he was bowing out of the company put into play various things like "Project Fabula Nova Crystalis" to try and get 7's lightning in a bottle again with 13. Thats why the protagonist is called Lightning. If was a failure that lasted beyond that console generation and XV was the last attempt to salvage some scrap from the wreckage to fill a gap in their big budget release schedule.
But the difference since then is the new CEO Yosuke Matsuda. He got to where he is by saying during the big mobile boom in japan "yeah theres lots of money in mobage and we should have a large foothold, but to throw away the core audiences we have even if they are less profitable is still garuanteed profit we are throwing away. The over 25 adult gamer needs to be catered to and respected for their loyalty, not abandoned" and thats where things like A Realm Reborn and Nier Automata came from.
Essentially they are still exorcising the shitshows put in place by his predecessor that have all been 7+ year developments that are huge money sinks in themselves but had all this dumb shit like paying a french clothing firm to use Lightning as a model 'to give the brand new roots outside games'. Matsuda doesn't always get it right but he understands they are still a videogame company and Yoshida was able to pull off A Realm Reborn and Taro was able to bring back Nier because of him.

Before Crisis, Dirge and Advent Children both predate FF7's 10th year anniversary. I think what really kicked the whole thing off was FFX-2 not being as well received as they'd hoped so they decided to go the expanded universe route for 7 instead.

I remember the original XIV before aRR was made with Crystal Tools (XIII's engine) then switched to Luminous. KHIII was suppose to use CT/Luminous until they switched to UE4.
