I wouldn't say that RPG Maker is popular due to XP-Ace using Ruby, although Ruby being Japanese probably is the reason the RPG Maker devs decided to use it. RPG Maker 95-2003 did not have any kind of scripting, and I doubt the older non-Windows versions of RPG Maker did either. And before you say all H games use is XP-Ace, that's wrong because I can name two that used 2000 or 2003: Violated Heroine and Puchidan Petit Dungeon. Wolf RPG Editor, a Japanese freeware clone of RPG Maker, is also just as popular with nips for making free Adventure games or RPGs. It's probably just the type of people releasing shit on dlsite. Lots of doujin games come out made in real engines or made in shit like Unity, and then are sold at Comiket or on shit like toranoana or melonbooks. A lot of asset flip type shit gets put on dlsite when it comes to their games section, and a lot of asset collections or asset generating software is sold on dlsite too. Maybe in the west people just don't sell their asset flips, but I've seen shit on Steam that suggests otherwise.

I'll tell you the real reason people use RPG maker. Because a lot of the people who are making these games are just artists who are doing all the assets themselves and don't have the time to learn any coding. So they use RPGmaker because it gets the job done. Not to say all RPGmaker games have an art behind them, a lot of them are lazy pieces of shit who use the defult assets that come with the program. But stuff like Hylics, OFF, Middens, yume nikki, and all those other visually interesting games probably only had an artist working on them and maybe someone to do the music.
