I badly want to ditch my dependency on Steam, but I don't know where to go to get my games other than through piracy. How do you pirate games in the current year? The last time I pirated anything was the movie The Last Starfighter probably 10 years ago. When I got a warning notice from my ISP that Universal Studios alerted them of the torrent I was downloading, it scared the shit out of me and I haven't pirated anything since. The only way I can think of to subvert their anti-piracy measures is to use a VPN, but torrents through your clear IP can be slow enough, let alone through a VPN. And if you have a game that's in the gigabyte download size, you could be downloading for literal days with or without a VPN. You also have to pay for a good VPN, so it sort of defeats the point of piracy. Plus, not every game is available on torrents, so Steam wins yet again.

How can I get back into the piracy game securely for free without compromising download speed and game availability?

Get Malwarebytes or something.

You can pirate the full version of it.

And really, if it's a virus, you can tell quite easily.

The letters don't mean shit, I've gotten probably 20 over the past few years. The company has to pass the letters on to save face. Lately I've had my internet "quarantined" a few times but I just call them and pretend like I don't know computers and say "I would never download anything illegally." and ask if I've been hack attacked. The tech support guy tells me that a new security team started this year and they are cracking down on uploading the data and shit like that. If you don't care about being a scumbag you can just hit and run on torrents and get a client that will let you cut the uploads.

>If you don't care about being a scumbag you can just hit and run on torrents

I was typically a leech. I would seed what I had, but only while downloading something else. Once I got what I needed, I'd close my client.

Wouldn't want to take a chance getting caught, though. ISP can still suspend your services. They'd have to be stupid to actually think anyone is so computer illiterate that they don't know that piracy is illegal.

>Sorry ocifer I didn't know that I couldn't kill that person

You don't say that you think piracy isn't illegal you just claim it wasn't you who downloaded it. When I've called them about the letters the told me to pretty much ignore them. It wasn't until lately that they started suspending my service but that's because (((Time Warner))) bought my provider. I even made them send out a tech to my house and spend 5 hours trying to figure out what was wrong with the internet the first time. Ive tested it lately if less than 100mb of a torrent gets seeded I don't get any letters. It's not illegal to backup owned software that was lost in a boating accident, however it is illegal to distribute copyrighted material.

I've actually been meaning to ask about this myself. Not about sites to pirate games (what do you take me for, some ZOGbot? I don't want to be the retard newfag who gets another ROM site shut down) but more about the pirating process itself. Besides anonymity stuff like VPNs (though judging, they aren't as trustworthy as I thought), what programs and equipment and shit do I need to start pirating? And if it costs money to acquire this stuff, what's names do I avoid?

I've never heard of a game company sending a scare letter anon. And a VPN shouldn't be that slow, I tried out windscribe and I swear it was faster than normal which probably means my isp is throttling me. They give you like 15GB free each month, which is pretty alright but you really don't need a vpn. Plus, even if it took days, that should be a pretty small compromise if you are really so paranoid about your privacy.

And don't use utorrent, it's a piece of shit, get qbittorrent (or deluge or anything else). qbittorrent is nice because it has built in search, and you can (and should) add sites to it.

GG anon, you sound green as grass and probably not very computer literate if you can't figure this stuff out by yourself. It makes me a bit weary of even giving you directions, since you might end up turning into your PC into a botnet mining farm and then blame piracy for that, when it would never have happened if you had been just a bit careful and used common sense. Oh well, anyways:

You might want or need a VPN if you live in a country that gives a shit about piracy and sends ISP letters (mine doesn't). I've seen people say good things about Tunnelbear and Windscribe, but I wouldn't know about their privacy. Can't help there.

Other than that, it's mostly stuff to protect yourself from getting miners and botnets. Always use uBlock Origin + NoScript extensions to visit pirate sites, always upload the game crack files to VirusTotal before running them (and pay attention and learn to differentiate false positives from actual harmful files, since most cracks do result in false positives), and of course always pay attention to what other users are saying in comment sections, both to watch out for harmful content, and troubleshooting.

As for software, if you're going to torrent, I recommend Deluge, Tixati or an old version of uTorrent (1.8.5 and 2.2.1 are the most recommended). If you're going to download a lot from file sharing host websites, use JDownloader and IDM - Internet Download Manager.

>paying to pirate

Other than VPNs if you need them, there's not much to pay for. If you're going to torrent a lot, you might want to pay for a seedbox service. Can't help you with that since I barely use torrents nowadays other than to get Fitgirl repacks, almost everything I pirate is hosted on file sharing hosts such as MEGA, Zippyshare, Openload, Google Drive, etc.

I can't see what equipment you'd need to buy for pirating, other than storage if you don't have enough. And optionally, a low-cost, low-power pc if you'd like to have a dedicated machine for downloading.

>you might end up turning into your PC into a botnet mining farm and then blame piracy for that, when it would never have happened if you had been just a bit careful and used common sense.

I'm illiterate yeah, but not a complete retard. I understand that (((certain people))), namely chinks, put all kinds of shit in and around piracy sites to turn the unwary's computers into chugging printers of their cryptoshit. Hence why I wanted to ask for advice instead of jumping right in; from the passing chatter I hear about pirating from other anons, like using whole Virtual Machines to test shit for malware, I'd thought it was a lot more complicated and dangerous than it might actually be.

I live in leafland and have been a good goy up until this point, so I don't know if I'll need a VPN and they might not anyway since I'm a literal autistic mudslime and will probably get slaps on the wrist if I'm caught because virtue signalling, but I'll check out those names just in case. Better safe than sorry, after all. As far as torrenting goes, I haven't done it at all before but I might want to try out Qbit over Deluge first and stay away from Tixati based on >>16290601 's chart, but I'll try and keep my options open.

Anything I should keep in mind when dealing when trying to find actual harmful files? Common filenames, delete anything in Chinese, that sort of stuff?

Using virtual machines to test cracked programs before running them on your PC is a valid approach, though I'd suggest using Sandboxie instead since with it you can more easily see what's modified by the program. The problem is that Sandboxie doesn't work with all programs. Of course, all this might be useless if the malicious content is hidden / obfuscated well enough. Ultimately, I think that running any kind of pirated software always poses some risk, risks that obviously can be calculated and minimized, but if any kind of risk no matter how small is unnaceptable then piracy is not for you.

Personally, I don't even use any of that - I just upload the cracked files to virustotal, and if they come off unsuspicious and people are okay with it in the comments section from the download page, I just take the risk, unless it's from some shady russian or chink no-name site that asks you to download some proprietary download manager to get the game. But then I wouldn't even bother, ofc.

You should always go after GOG releases of games that use the original GOG installers, these are usually the safest. And then, scene releases from codex, cpy, reloaded, prophet or darksiders - the ElAmigos repacks, very popular nowadays, are safe too.

>I understand that (((certain people))), namely chinks, put all kinds of shit in and around piracy sites to turn the unwary's computers into chugging printers of their cryptoshit.

Yep, chinks and to a lesser extents, slavs - be very careful of pirated content originated from Russian/slav sites too, as there's often malware and miners in them. The problem is that nowadays, especially for smaller, less known indie games, chinks and slavs are often the only source for pirated versions - so if you write them off altogether, you might be cucking yourself out of pirating lots of indie games.

One thing you can do to mitigate this problem on games pirated from chinks and slavs,is use the cracked Steam API files from Codex or CPY (obtained from another cracked game), instead of the cracks provided by them. If the game only uses basic Steamstub protection this will almost always work, provided you edit the crack .ini file (usually steam_emu.ini or steam_api.ini) with the correct parameters for the game. I've used this technique to replace cracks in literally dozens if not hundreds of games.

>torrent clients

qbittorrent is fine but a bit bloated for my tastes, while Deluge is as lightweight and minimalistic as old versions of uTorrent. If you don't mind that then there's nothing wrong in using qbittorrent.

Not that guy, but my personal setup is pretty simple:

1. Purchase a VPN account that supports the OpenVPN client. Preferably this is one outside of the nine-eyes (imo this is a meme as the MPAA and RIAA have forced the hands of non participants in the past, but not for small fry)

2. Setup a VM of your choice (virtualbox is free for windows)

3. Install and configure torrent client to autostart on said VPN.

4. Install preferred piracy software and force it to bind to the VPN's networking interface/address (the support for this varies from client to client)

Other options are to use Usenet or other less popular p2p networks/methods, though I personally get more utility from a VPN outside of just anonymous file sharing.
