I wish I could help you but the shipping cost alone for a hacked memory card from here would be more than $20 bucks, I have FreeMCBoot installed on mine.

I once got really horny and came on one of my old PS2s.

You need a FreeMcBoot memory card to get started, and also a network adapter and big honkin' hard drive.

Here's a guide on how to do it all, so you can see what you're getting into. There are SATA-modified network adapters that greatly open up the hard drives you can use, but I've just got a PATA 160GB 5400RPM drive in my PS2. Nowhere near fulled up yet, but I don't play it very often anymore. Mostly I rip games from the internal DVD drive, but if it fucks off, I can load them from my computer, but that's more of a pain in the ass due to the formatting of the drive.

Man, is the method I knew and the only way to hack one with an unmodded PS2 was to do swap tricks which is a little harmful on itself.

Alright; modding question:

I want to play burned PSX games on my PS2, and I am considering buying a MODBO to do this. Am I correct in thinking this will work, and what board was better, 4 or 5? Is it worth engaging in this relatively difficult mod?

They've been around for a while, but people claimed they have compatibility issues and I'm yet to know where.

Speaking of HDD's, did anyone on the scene have any success with PSX (the DVR one)?

The chip should work as long as the required pin is soldered in place.

>>16254189

You'll need a compatible IDE or SATA drive, a network adapter, and a means for your computer to be able to access and write to the drive at minimum. Network adapters should be pretty cheap (though I'd recommend getting them from somewhere that has a good return policy if they can't prove it works), while with the drives cost is going to vary on make and size, but you want to be aware of both their potential PS2 compatibility and longevity.

FreeMcBoot is not an outright requirement but is very useful to have in conjunction for hotbarring homebrew applications to the bootup screen rather than have to dig all the way to the bottom of the HDD drive each time you want to play something.

>>16254307

If one has access to uLaunchElf on their PS2, you can put the FreeMcBoot installer file on a USB drive and use uLE to install on any compatible card. The idea seems to have been that one either needed to drop the money on the actual install disc, or at least know someone with a FMcBed card (in which at some point someone had to drop the money), but uLE is the only actual requirement.

Very important question:

If I mod by PAL PS2 can I play Japanese and other NTSC games?

>>16259014

Excellent, at long last I can play games at full speed.

522685  No.16259097

What's the best current homebrew means of copying a game from disc and installing to a PS2 drive through the system itself, and does it require a specific format of drive beyond something like >>16254597 to utilize that install method, or would it need to be formatted differently? Asking since for whatever reason the computer I've been using as a terminal to install ISOs through is getting bitchy again, with WinHIIP saying there's no boot record for the drive and thus refusing to work with it (despite the fact the drive has been working within the PS2 just fine), and a few games I've been wanting to install recently a friend has actual copies of, thus an alternative could be helpful in me not hogging his discs for weeks on end.

>>16256842

I meant digging in the HDD as far as locating loaders, since older installed files sink within the browser (which makes for waiting for each row of ISOs and such to register before you can drop to the next one); hotbarring applications themselves such as loaders saves a lot of time. If you mean the FMcB installer though, speaking from my own personal set up, there was one included in the starter modpack I used to set the drive up first, but of which I'd heard elsewhere was a broken app of it. So I just used the uLE that was also in the installed modpack to load a properly working installer from a USB instead.

>>16258999

I want to say I've heard yes, but at the same time I'd have to question what sets the refresh rate: the game itself, or the system? Just makes me think it's probably easier to have a system be able to run something below the maximum it can do (IE: NTSC loading PAL) than try to do the inverse, but as a burger it's not like I've had to try it myself. OPL also has a number of settings you can tweak on an individual basis for a given game if needed, so if something's not working, you might look online and see if anyone had to adjust those first. But at its roots, loader applications avoid region lock discs themselves would have (and of which would require hard mods or swap magic in the past. Just make sure you've got up to date loaders for better compatibility in general than prior versions might have.

I know, but does anyone have experience with the MODBO, both installation and use?

A PAL PS2 will not play NTSC games at the correct speed.

Rhythm games will desync. You need a PS2 TEST.

bfb43d  No.16271498

Will mods decrease the load time before fights on Tales of the Abyss? It's making grinding VERY frustrating for me.

522685  No.16276849

>>16271498

Using loaders might reduce the overall loading (digital storage tends to call quicker than from disc), but I can't say by how much, or if, given some games are specifically meant to call at a particular speed. When it comes to killing shit in that game, I find it easier to do so in dungeons, since the loading in those is noticeably less than the overworld. Honestly not real sure what causes the overworld to have such a long load, or why the camera is so sluggish, unless the game is also loading the Qliphoth or something without it being visible.
