Sprinting is a much bigger issue than autoclimb. If they at least disabled it for flags carrying the intel it'd be more balanced. As it is the game is way too attacker sided since it takes hours to set up effective fortifications and on the default map at least maybe 5 minutes to low-effort undermine it out. Because it's impossible to return the intel to where it started all they have to do is move it maybe five seconds walk to the side and a single attacker invalidates everything the defenders have done up to that point. This issue is mitigated somewhat by certain custom maps that have more variable heights and rivers/holes to provide natural defensive points.

Bullet drop would change the game entirely. It wouldn't feel like AoS at that point at all, but it might be cool. Would certainly add utility to the other guns, especially if the rifle was made into a bolt action.
Also it doesn't make sense to remove autoclimb if you're reducing the voxel size. If you changed the mapgen and allowed autoclimb over the smaller voxels (but on the equivalent volume of the originally sized voxels), it would feel more normal and you wouldn't have the ridiculous sensation of getting caught on tiny bricks.

Autoclimb and sprinting aren't improvements to the game, but they don't ruin things. They make the game more aggressive which I think leads to blue not digging in or defending their intel as much as they used to, since dying just means a quick jaunt back towards green base. Yes it'd be fun to have blue acting like their true tunnelnigger selves and building pillboxes all over the hillside, but that's life. This is exactly fucking correct. Sprinting turns the game into nothing but constant rushing and makes vertical movement terrible, and the autojump/slow downlook make hilltop maps like Classicgen absolutely fucking unbearable to move on or have a firefight on. It's not a slow paced bunker battle where coming over an exposed hill is suicide, it's a fucking nightmare of being dragged to a complete stop trying to walk across 2 diagonal blocks and shooting at people teleporting up and down every time they move.
It doesn't help that Sprinting turns every flag cap into a free ride, there's no way for someone to catch you once you're out of their spawn radius.

200% agreed, anon. If I don't see intel get dropped within 5 seconds of it getting picked up I don't bother to try and defend, no matter how close I was. The odds are horrifically stacked against you to even be able to find the fucker, and the increased run speed means less time to aim at and shoot at him. Even if you are lucky enough to get the kill, the aforementioned mobility means you won't have any decent amount of time to set up new defenses before another wave of attackers comes in. Last night we spent a solid 2/3 hours playing a single map and that may well have been because it had good prebuilt defensive structures for each team to use so we got to play fast n loose and have a solid spot to fight from in most cases. Maybe that's the solution, and we just need to create new maps that adapt to the aggressiveness of .75; can someone tell me about map creation for AoS? We need a Christchurch map anyways, so I can't be the only one interested…

Reasoning for this is to slow down the gameplay. The netcode for the game isn't very good to begin with, so there's a lot of jank in moving. Autoclimb also fucks with aim especially downsight.

Spawning is pretty fucked right now, either putting people at a significant disadvantage or advantage. A fix I propose is that spawning is done within a certain radius of the tent. Intel spawning is a different beast entirely, but for the most part I think it's fine at the moment. A thing to note is that spawning is done in waves, but I think that it should still be done like this for now, at least until we see how it works in implementation

Tents aren't valued all that much in AoS at the moment. Destroying tents could be an alternate way to victory, making things far more interesting. Some adjustments to how intel works might have to be made.

In order to get the ball rolling I might start on the client-side changes, like disabling sprinting.
The player input network packet would still contain a "sprinting" flag, but it would always be "0" in this client. This should keep it compatible with the 0.75 server for now, although we'd need a gentlemans agreement to use the non-sprinting client.
If this client takes off then someone could look at removing the sprinting packet data from the client / server entirely, which would let us host 8spades-only servers. I'm sure there's plenty of other features which would need a modified server, so it'll have to happen at some point.

This will also go a long way to making verticality important again: it will be less automatic to climb supports/fortifications and jump out of water or over trenches, making them viable defenses once more.

This could be another good change, but I think spawning around the tent is the wrong way to go about it. Just refusing to spawn players within a certain number of blocks of the flag should be enough to stop people from quite literally appearing behind you after you pick it up.

Moveable, yes. Destructible, no. Being able to resupply blocks and ammo and heal should not be up to RNG; it sucks ass having to book it across half a dozen coordinates just to heal after successfully defending.

SMG shouldn't be in the game. Shotgun needs to dominate its niche. Making it consistently headshot and out-gun a rifle at close-medium range should be enough, especially in more cramped maps. Do not introduce bullet drop under any circumstances.

I can agree with this. Nothing sucks shit like trying to cook a grenade to blow open cover and getting a two-block high hole.
>Fog radius adjustments.
Can't this already be edited by server hosts? I do agree that less fog would be beneficial for the game's balance, it's currently way too easy to rush the flag unnoticed by just moving slightly around the enemy.
<Ragdolls
Ragdolls were a mistake, but I like the idea of getting to hang enemies and make mass graves.
<Defensive Weapons
Giving the game something like this would fuck with the balance pretty hard, but it'd really get us back to the days of forts and tunnels if it were a genuine threat. I like it. Maybe give them the SMG as a piss-weak sidearm.
<Shield Spade
Awful idea, would make it far too safe to peak cover if you could protect your face when aiming, or just obnoxious if it weren't effective. Your head should always be vulnerable when you can shoot someone.

Love it, fantastic idea. Probably not a good idea to implement it for many reasons.
<Structural Integrity
Fortifications are susceptible enough to damage, they don't need some complicated weight shit making the one guy that actually plays Defense any more miserable.

To prevent people from sprinting server-side, the server could simply keep track of the amount of distance the player moved on the horizontal plane in the last few seconds. If it exceeds a certain threshold; he's sprinting and you punish him. Though this does give a bit of margin for people to sprint anyway, it'll prevent people from sprinting away with the intel.
This method should work as long as there is no way to "boost" your speed with grenades or something else ridiculous, but I don't think AoS has any of that.

I removed autoclimb in the latest git commit. Here's the new behavior:
You can't autorun up 1-height blocks, they must be jumped manually.
You can't jump up 2-height blocks.
You can crouch-jump up 2-height blocks.
I also fixed the collision code so crouch-jumping shouldn't result in you getting stuck in the floor/walls anymore. Openspades had this problem, but nobody tended to crouch-jump much due to autoclimb.

SMG isn't really all that OP in combat, at moderate to long distances a rifle will win out most of the time. The main issue with SMGs are that they destroy blocks really easily, quickly undoing any towers/fortifications made. If you have a small group with SMGs that don't manage to get shot they can undo any defensive progress a team has made. If possible I'd remove them entirely honestly.

Why? The entire game revolves around traveling across lots of terrain with little cover and low TTK. Why do you want to add shields? The lack or armor is exactly what incentivizes players to build forts and tunnels.

I don't think the fork should aim to recreate AoS, but to expand on its current elements. Increase reload time, adjust damage, make the recoil so cancerous and unmanageable that it's difficult to fire more than two shots at a single block without resetting. There are a bunch of things that can be done to ensure that it doesn't completely fuck the balance, which there is none at the moment since the only gun enabled is the rifle.

Since the new client has the unanimously agreed on tweaks (removing autoclimb, sprint, and looks slowdown) i guess we'd just need to give it a few test matches on a rifles-only server before adding an new stuff.
It's still 0.75 compatible for the gamenight server but i'm looking into server code to see if i can force require the new client in order to connect, then we could look at server side balances and tweaks.
If anyone has more experience than me (almost zero) with python and servers then feel free to contribute.
I'm still slightly concerned about potentially splitting an already small community by locking out players using the vanilla game (and players who aren't techy enough to compile their own builds), but without client code there's no other way to implement this stuff.

As someone who only plays this game using the vanilla client, I'd honestly be okay with switching over to a modded openspades assuming that the fixes were there. Having the game not look the way I'm used to is a small trade-off for the removal of shit features. Plus, my guess would be that if a future gamenight thread OP only contained the modded client then there would be few if any issues with anons trying to use the old vanilla client.

Whats the point of adding the spade oif you cant prone? how are you gonna use it on plains, will it block a few bullets before breaking? how are you going to see out of the thing especially when using a 1 block viewport. will it be fixed in place when you set it on a block and the gun moves independently or will both things move alongside eachother, how will it affect recoil of the weapon? how would you chose the spade shield over just a normal rifle. if an LMG is introduced how are you going to use it if the recoil is unmanageable and you cant prone to deploy the tripod, when using a viewport how will the LMG be mounted and what will the movement be like when mounted, do lose speed for carrying an LMG around, how do you stop the LMG from cutting down hills and defenses extremely quickly that its useless building anything, do you add a shield to the LMG? how do you prevent everyfag just getting an LMG and using it to dig tunnels really fast, which LMG from WW1 would it be?

Because it can still offer protection. Again, this idea isn’t set in stone. Just a suggestion.

Dig a 1/2-block deep hole or make a 1/2 block tower.

In the weapon selection menu, the option for shield spade would be made available.

By viewport I suspect you mean ironsight. When mounted, I would probably reduce sensitivity just a little bit moreso than the rifle, but that might be taking it a step too far.

I know you have SMG PSTD, anon. I don’t have all the answers for you, but this is just something we need to figured out, together. We will get you out of the dark place. On the shield spade, that’s just a thing I thought would be cool, but it could help balance out against SMG users. The spade would be shit for digging, though. Probably take at least three or four times as long to use it compared to a normal spade, making it impractical for infiltration.The LMG will be much easier to implement, so I wouldn’t even consider the shield spade right now because that’s just distracting.

Model changes sound neat to. The current OS ones look pretty bad. I don't think there should be any performance changes to the rifle, though.
So regarding recoil, I was thinking something like this. When against blocks, recoil would be better.
