Has there been any game where you were at the edge of screaming or throwing the controller at the wall, or simply make you really anxious because how tight you had to be to beat it?
I kinda had that feeling when i was an infant and i was playing Conker's Bad Fur Day, specifically the lava surfing level.
My younger self got so angry at that level, that i would just make a new game and stopped whenever i hit that part, until a month later i finally beat it.
I think that and F-Zero GX, even novice was really hard for me back in the day.

Every truly good game. This is the sign of a proper level of difficulty.
One of my favorite moments playing video games is when my friend and I were playing Soul Calibur III shortly after release. We both got it on release and both played it all day every day after school, so we would always brag about how much better we were getting every day, then when we got to play against each other on the weekend it was great. One time I got too into it though and our match was so intense that I squeezed my shitty Madcatz controller too hard and it cracked in my hands. Worth it though.
Even still happens now. Just yesterday the same friend and I were playing Joe & Mac. First time I ever really tried to beat that game. Getting to the last level and beating the boss with one hit left is how you know that game is balanced just right. No better feeling than winning by just that much, too.

Both Prinny games on PSP are super fun yet frustatingly difficult.
Not only bosses have insanely tight moves to dodge/counter, you need to mash the attack button like a fucking caveman on crack to fight them properly. Literally each press is an attack, so your DPS is really based on your mashing ability. It wears you down physically with time, you can retry a boss forever(tecnically only 1000 times before you run out of lives) but if you take long enough you need to stop for a while and play the whole stage again with a taste of defeat since you're too spent/unmotivated to play well enough to beat them at the time. You leave sessions with your arms sore, it also can't be good for a controller's health, God bless the PSP.
Love the games but sure as hell don't want to go through them again just for entertainment.

Armored Core: Silent Line, first during my first time through the mission mode, but the real shit starts once you start training your arena AI ACs, as the map that they force you to use is what arena opponents were actually designed to use. The default arena has your opponent mindlessly strafe around you, but when you pick the Military Zone map, the enemies suddenly git gud and make use of cover and range.
I'm having a blast picking unusual loadouts, challenging the arena ACs, and seeing if my AI AC daughterus can pick up on my strengths and strats. Almost every match elevates my heart rate a noticeable amount, and some are so fustrating, the plastic of the Dualshock 2 groans under my grip. I've intentionally neglected to unlock the last part, because I know that half the arena ACs use OP-Intensify, and I'm saving the satisfaction of pummeling them into dust on a level playing-field for when I'm ready to be done with the game at least until I make busted-ass AI ACs to equip with OP-I and challenge.

I cannot for the life of me remember what the E and T games were, but I know for a fact that the M game was Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, and that it had the lowest heart rate associated with it, but looking back, all was probably doing was running around Big Shell aimlessly, and I recall that, at the time, I wasn't really interested in playing MGS2 compared to the other games.

My first rathalos kill in Monster Hunter Generations.
To be perfectly clear, Rathalos is intended to be a major wall to new players, usually gaurding the way to the boss of that game and he punishes you for a lot of bad habits you picked up through the game, like trying to stay in a monster's ass. Him simply turning to face you is an attack, because it swings his tail around. He also is one of the first monsters to integrate flight into his attacks rather than just using it to flee.
He's also got this shit-eating grin thanks to how his face is arranged.
Solo, all my potions used, I discovered that Rathalos also has one nasty surprise: He enters a rage state between going to sleep and dying (typically your victory lap). The last few minutes of the fight was a grim and tight test of evasion with me stuck using a Greatsword. Now, the greatsword has a decent evade when drawn, but it's dogshit at actually moving around. The number of times I swore he missed me with a fireball or a dive by inches was goddamn astounding.
I don't think I'll ever get that feeling again.

I remember the PS1 digimon card game (the second one) being nerve-wracking. the bgm during important battles also added to the tension.
>game only allows saving every 3 opponents in arenas so you have to beat multiple opponents in a row. also you only get 3 decks so you can't have 1 deck to counter every color
>be about to kill the 3rd digimon of last opponent
>opponent blindly uses a card from their deck and it just happens to be the card that fucks you over (e.g. swap HP with opponent if at lower stage, if opponent is U level +400ATK and opponent attack misses, if opponent attack matches card +500ATK and attack first, if own HP is lower +700HP, halve own HP and counter).
>next turn opponent evolves digimon and fucks you up
that said the game is poorly balanced. difficulty stems mostly from having to face decks with better cards than you have access to. if you spend hours autistically grinding and building a good deck then you can trounce anything the game throws at you.

Action games don't really give me this feeling, closest I can think of is the last two fights in Witch Trials V in Bayo 2. Funny enough, I've felt more anxiousness from RPGs like Etrian Odyssey.
>F-Zero GX.
Some story missions on the toughest difficulty gave me the feeling of time moving too slow. It's like the chances of me fucking up exponentially increase the longer I played and the closer I got to winning. In all actuality, I just would need to do another 1 minute long lap or something.
The "Save Jody" mission was also an experience, hearing the same noises and trying to exhibit perfect, precision maneuvering for a total of 40 seconds (I think) is trauma inducing. It's that "your brain just turns off and leaves" feeling, and it either reluctantly gets dragged back into reality or you hear this and relief washes over you.

What bullshit, but I think I'd still take it over the shit you see in Future Tone. I don't really get pumped in Project DIVA unless it's some 190+ BPM song, my accuracy goes down otherwise cause I go too fast.
One of the only problems I have with Future Tone is that you can't see song BPM. Knowing the BPM on the song made it easier for me to adjust to the right mindset.
