Has there been any game where you were at the edge of screaming or throwing the controller at the wall, or simply make you really anxious because how tight you had to be to beat it?

I kinda had that feeling when i was an infant and i was playing Conker's Bad Fur Day, specifically the lava surfing level.

My younger self got so angry at that level, that i would just make a new game and stopped whenever i hit that part, until a month later i finally beat it.

I think that and F-Zero GX, even novice was really hard for me back in the day.

Honestly and truly, Titanfall 1

>normally a pussy-ass turtler in all games, don't play competitive/PVP games as a general rule

>get talked into getting TF1

>holy fuck the movement is so good

>the titans feel so good to drive

>the weapons feel so good to shoot

>turns me into a sprinting, wallrunning, hipfiring, neck-snapping animal

>my clearest memory of that game is a 30 second long battle between my titan and four enemy players

>using gravity shields to throw enemy missiles/bullets back at them, punching titans until they explode, using my 40mm rifle to core their titans

>the entire time my russian titan AI is babbling in slav about missile locks, my UI is going completely fucking bananas, and i can feel the emotion that is responsible for war

>kill three of the enemies, nuclear eject from my titan and nuke the last one

>got enough points in that fight to immediately call another titan

>the cycle begins anew

I'm getting amped just thinking about it. Goddamn that was a fun game

>Has there been any game where you were at the edge of screaming or throwing the controller at the wall, or simply make you really anxious because how tight you had to be to beat it?

Every truly good game. This is the sign of a proper level of difficulty.

One of my favorite moments playing video games is when my friend and I were playing Soul Calibur III shortly after release. We both got it on release and both played it all day every day after school, so we would always brag about how much better we were getting every day, then when we got to play against each other on the weekend it was great. One time I got too into it though and our match was so intense that I squeezed my shitty Madcatz controller too hard and it cracked in my hands. Worth it though.

Even still happens now. Just yesterday the same friend and I were playing Joe & Mac. First time I ever really tried to beat that game. Getting to the last level and beating the boss with one hit left is how you know that game is balanced just right. No better feeling than winning by just that much, too.

There are plenty that can be difficult as hell, but the fights that get the blood pumping are ones that get you hyped for the fight and then deliver on it.

Both Prinny games on PSP are super fun yet frustatingly difficult.

Not only bosses have insanely tight moves to dodge/counter, you need to mash the attack button like a fucking caveman on crack to fight them properly. Literally each press is an attack, so your DPS is really based on your mashing ability. It wears you down physically with time, you can retry a boss forever(tecnically only 1000 times before you run out of lives) but if you take long enough you need to stop for a while and play the whole stage again with a taste of defeat since you're too spent/unmotivated to play well enough to beat them at the time. You leave sessions with your arms sore, it also can't be good for a controller's health, God bless the PSP.

Love the games but sure as hell don't want to go through them again just for entertainment.

This and hacking bank accounts was simply nervewracking. If you get detected and traced you have two options:

>Detonate the remote explosives to destroy the gateway and thus the evidence, I hope you have spare cash to start anew

<Lose the game. No retries

As for me playing the marine campaign in the original AvP still makes me jump and yell like when I was a kid. The motion tracker helps you out as much as it stresses you out. If you're using the image intensifier you can see in the dark but get no advance warning. And the aliens are fast as fuck, noisy when attacking and quiet when stalking you.

And then there's THESE faggots.

I used to feel the same way until I overcame the first difficulty spike, now I can put in a few hours at a time. It helps when 30 minutes accounts for about five attempts, you'll want to put in just a few more.

Armored Core: Silent Line, first during my first time through the mission mode, but the real shit starts once you start training your arena AI ACs, as the map that they force you to use is what arena opponents were actually designed to use. The default arena has your opponent mindlessly strafe around you, but when you pick the Military Zone map, the enemies suddenly git gud and make use of cover and range.

I'm having a blast picking unusual loadouts, challenging the arena ACs, and seeing if my AI AC daughterus can pick up on my strengths and strats. Almost every match elevates my heart rate a noticeable amount, and some are so fustrating, the plastic of the Dualshock 2 groans under my grip. I've intentionally neglected to unlock the last part, because I know that half the arena ACs use OP-Intensify, and I'm saving the satisfaction of pummeling them into dust on a level playing-field for when I'm ready to be done with the game at least until I make busted-ass AI ACs to equip with OP-I and challenge.

I was testing if a games ESRB rating would correspond with heart rate increases.

I had played 3 game, each of a different rating, one E, one T and one M, for a day and tested my heart rate after the extended play sessions.

I cannot for the life of me remember what the E and T games were, but I know for a fact that the M game was Metal Gear Solid 2 Sons of Liberty, and that it had the lowest heart rate associated with it, but looking back, all was probably doing was running around Big Shell aimlessly, and I recall that, at the time, I wasn't really interested in playing MGS2 compared to the other games.

Also play in Thief can give me a fucking heart attack because I'm shit at stealth games and trying to avoid the guards makes me shit my pants at the fear they'll catch me.

There was a small ludum dare platformer by the name of "Colours of your world" that had a challenge mode after the game was finished which I tried to beat. It was fine until the third world which I never beat because one segment just tired me to the level of giving up. I'll have to play it again.

Playing Trump DOOM on President Trump with no quicksaves besides the very beginning of the stages was fucking tense after a while. Tried to do it with Unloved too until I realised that the was doesn't work that way.

Actually fuck Unloved and its second half, it also applies. It was complete, unfair bullshit.

My first rathalos kill in Monster Hunter Generations.

To be perfectly clear, Rathalos is intended to be a major wall to new players, usually gaurding the way to the boss of that game and he punishes you for a lot of bad habits you picked up through the game, like trying to stay in a monster's ass. Him simply turning to face you is an attack, because it swings his tail around. He also is one of the first monsters to integrate flight into his attacks rather than just using it to flee.

He's also got this shit-eating grin thanks to how his face is arranged.

Solo, all my potions used, I discovered that Rathalos also has one nasty surprise: He enters a rage state between going to sleep and dying (typically your victory lap). The last few minutes of the fight was a grim and tight test of evasion with me stuck using a Greatsword. Now, the greatsword has a decent evade when drawn, but it's dogshit at actually moving around. The number of times I swore he missed me with a fireball or a dive by inches was goddamn astounding.

I don't think I'll ever get that feeling again.

This, nothing ever gets you tilted as fuck as doing exceptionally well for a change but then getting paired with a team of idlers, friendlies or otherwise incompetent people and losing the game at the last minute, especially on defense.

I remember the PS1 digimon card game (the second one) being nerve-wracking. the bgm during important battles also added to the tension.

>game only allows saving every 3 opponents in arenas so you have to beat multiple opponents in a row. also you only get 3 decks so you can't have 1 deck to counter every color

>be about to kill the 3rd digimon of last opponent

>opponent blindly uses a card from their deck and it just happens to be the card that fucks you over (e.g. swap HP with opponent if at lower stage, if opponent is U level +400ATK and opponent attack misses, if opponent attack matches card +500ATK and attack first, if own HP is lower +700HP, halve own HP and counter).

>next turn opponent evolves digimon and fucks you up

that said the game is poorly balanced. difficulty stems mostly from having to face decks with better cards than you have access to. if you spend hours autistically grinding and building a good deck then you can trounce anything the game throws at you.

>Only faggots hold onto the handrail

<playing game for babies even without handrail

if you had posted ITG you'd have a point. also PIU is harder and discourages well, used to discourage bar use. btw fuck life depletion fail (aka stage break), it ruins your fun when trying new songs as you're more worried about not missing at all than enjoying the challenge and learning the chart. it has literally no reason to exist.

Down in the Bonehoard level in Thief 1. I didn't play the Thief Gold version where they changed that level to be much easier. All those fucking zombies man just wouldn't stay down, and we weren't playing the level very properly (you practically needed graphing paper so you could map out the zombies' patrol paths and avoid 'em all) so partway through it would invariably turn into OH FUCK I GOT ZOMBIES ON MY ASS RUN FOR YOUR FUCKING LIFE AGGRO EVERYTHING AND PRAY THE ZOMBIES DONT GET YOU BEFORE YOU FINISH. So many failed runs until the brute force solution worked.

Obligatory. Though it kind of loses its affect after the second or third time. There's cool details you pick up on though, like the axe murderers ghost appearing between the cracks of the boilers when you go to turn on power to the elevator.

>Down in the bonehoard

I've heard that level was significantly harder in TDP, but I can't imagine it having anymore zombies. It was already kind of a pain on expert, because the loot is all well hidden, more zombies on top of backtracking does not sound like fun. Even though they're cheesy house of the dead zombies, thief zombies still kind of unnerve me. More specifically, the creepy animation of them tilting their head up when on the ground and you get within range.

I always get this feeling when I'm DA on Attorney Online Vidya that I discovered recently. It actually feels surreal to be in Wright's shoes. I came to understand why he was sweating so much in the Ace Attorney games, as defending your client is no joke. It's a really great experience I'd recommend to any Ace Attorney fan to try at least once, especially if there's a good prosecutor against you.

Alternatively and obiviously , tight matches in online games. Back in the day I used to have big adrenaline rushes when playing Metroid Prime Hunters, S4 league or Mario Strikers.

My difficulties were mainly because I had the worst fucking build to go against him at first.

SHMUPs do this best, boss attack patterns tend to be drawn out. Both Touhou DDC and SA had a sort of perfect, tense difficulty to them as the game progresses.

Action games don't really give me this feeling, closest I can think of is the last two fights in Witch Trials V in Bayo 2. Funny enough, I've felt more anxiousness from RPGs like Etrian Odyssey.

>F-Zero GX.

Some story missions on the toughest difficulty gave me the feeling of time moving too slow. It's like the chances of me fucking up exponentially increase the longer I played and the closer I got to winning. In all actuality, I just would need to do another 1 minute long lap or something.

The "Save Jody" mission was also an experience, hearing the same noises and trying to exhibit perfect, precision maneuvering for a total of 40 seconds (I think) is trauma inducing. It's that "your brain just turns off and leaves" feeling, and it either reluctantly gets dragged back into reality or you hear this and relief washes over you.

>>16242276

What bullshit, but I think I'd still take it over the shit you see in Future Tone. I don't really get pumped in Project DIVA unless it's some 190+ BPM song, my accuracy goes down otherwise cause I go too fast.

One of the only problems I have with Future Tone is that you can't see song BPM. Knowing the BPM on the song made it easier for me to adjust to the right mindset.
