Can we finally admit that this game was mediocre and worse than RDR1 and Red Dead Revolver, save for it's graphics and physics?

Also spaghetti western thread I guess. There's a void yet to be filled.

Mostly waiting on jewstar to release it on PC tbh.

Too much railroading, too much walking/riding, not enough action, and the controls were terrible, both the control scheme and input lag. GTA IV was trashed for being clunky, but this got a pass for being at least twice as clunky? Pretty decent as a walking simulator I'd admit, that's all this game is good for.

havent played it, havent watched and videos involving it since ive had my share of open world collectathons for a good while and if i ever do get around to playing it id want it to be fresh since discovery is half of the fun. so im not going to agree with anything and i think thats a horrible way to start off a thread.

as for cowboy games, ive been playing a bit of steamworld heist on another anons recommendation. youre robot space pirate cowboys and there seems to be lots of different ways to play with the variety of characters. but i wish you could look down the skill line (no tree, just level up get ability/stat boost), speed up enemy turns, sometimes i overstay my welcome (spawning more and more dudes on some maps) and ill have to watch 8 jerkoffs climb ladders for 16 seconds.

this guy right here is an olympic god by the way.

one big element of the game is how you have to pay attention to your characters swaying as you aim your weapon. everyone does it, but its especially funny when you see a shaking old man take someones head off around a corner and behind cover with a ricochet. it always feels like an accident gone right.

Plus i forgot since i dont play wigger trash like gta just how much of rockstars quest design is 'sit in a vehicle and listen to an exposition dump' like the fucking opening to skyrim but for the entire game.

and i love westerns but boy would i rather have a game in a weird western setting like malifaux, deadlands or fuck even westworld over 'rooty tooty buy our online gold and shooty'.

I played the witcher 3 for the first time afterwards and it was like night and fucking day. Maybe if we got another 'undead nightmare' style game that used RDR2s gorgeous map for monster hunting i would show genuine interest but i've still not even finished the game and dont think i will which for me is an extreme rarity usually reserved for trash like x blades or assassins creed.

>Red Dead Redemption 2's Open World Is Amazing Because It's Designed Backwards

>Because I like keeping my finger on the pulse of the games industry, I play as many big releases at launch as I can, and when credits roll, I'm happy to move onto the next game no matter how much I enjoyed the previous one. I loved Red Dead Redemption 2 when I beat it in early November. I truly feel it's the most impressive open world game I've ever played, but when credits rolled on Arthur's 90+ hour adventure, I was on to the next game, trying to stay in the know of what's new. Recently, a relative drought in the games calendar (and a binge of Deadwood on HBO) has led me to revisit Rockstar's magnum opus to see more of what I may have missed before. Despite doing every story and stranger mission that appeared on my map, taking close to triple-digit hours to see it all, I'm finding that I had only really scratched the surface last fall. Red Dead Redemption 2's open world is designed backwards compared to the rest of the industry, and that's what makes it amazing.

>There's no shortage of massive, open world action-adventure games these days. A few years back, I wrote about feeling some open world fatigue, and I pointed to cluttered maps like those in Ubisoft's games among others as chief causes for my weariness. Staring at a map with hundreds of missions, side missions, collectibles, and other points of interest feels daunting. It makes me ask "why bother?" because it feels like there's too much to see, more than I have time for. Red Dead Redemption 2 flips this tired design on its head, and discovering just how much is hidden beneath the surface has reinvigorated my love for the game and the genre alike.

>When you look at RDR2's map post-game, all that is certain to remain are shop icons and fast travel locations. You'd be forgiven to think, like I did, that's all there is left to do. Ride a horse, buy some clothes, switch to the online mode for the rest of the action. Happily, I was so wrong. I've put in another 15 or so hours with the game over the past week, and it's remarkable how many interesting things I've discovered. I've encountered a ghost haunting the swamps of Lemoyne, alien spacecrafts flying overhead, more than one science experiment gone wrong, mammoth bones, and — my favorite — a cabin that seems to belong to The Strange Man from the first game, an apparently omniscient character whom many players believe is Death incarnate or something like it.

>>16235225

>There's a slant toward the supernatural in a lot of Red Dead's secrets, but that's not all there is. Scripted encounters like that which I had last night with incestuous thieves at the Aberdeen Pig Farm are available all over the game world, but unlike in Assassin's Creed or Batman Arkham or every other sandbox, Red Dead hardly ever informs you these things are there. The in-game 100% completion tracker clues you into some stuff, but even there it will keep some things off of the page until you've initiated the questline. Even on the map, the western world can seem quite sparse before you happen upon these points of interest, but once discovered, they're given icons and often jotted down in Arthur's journal, like favorite memories. Rather than slowly collect small check marks next to hundreds of icons there since the first minute, you fill out the map with sights you've seen, people you've met, stories you've discovered.

>Plenty of developers hide Easter eggs in their worlds, but Rockstar takes it to never before seen levels by hiding everything but major missions off the map. This approach takes the Ubisoftian checklist and morphs it into an exciting scavenger hunt where every discovery feels earned and every moment is a memory. Rather than looking at the map and wondering how to most efficiently collect an area's six collectibles, two side quests, and one Easter egg as though I'm trying not to go down any grocery store aisle more than once, I'm instead invited to ride around and happen upon unique moments and intriguing plotlines all on my own. The game regularly throws irresistible moral decision-making events at you too, and sometimes these come back to you later in a way that makes it feel like you're more than just a collectible-vacuuming avatar in a virtual world.

>It takes a high level of confidence to carve out so much content for your audience and then hardly ever tip them off to its existence. It's a trail only Rockstar could've blazed because they have that sort of confidence as well as unwavering trust from their fans to deliver experiences which have no equal. I saw the end of Red Dead Redemption 2 four months ago, but this week, I'm finding that was only the beginning.

568fc1  No.16235230

RDR2 is as slow and cumbersome as a simulator, but it's not as difficult or involved as one. So it just sucks. It's a boring, slow, walk through the wild wild appalachian mountains.

Imagine if you were playing something like Spintires. The car would just effortlessly go through all the mud without you doing anything. It would just be a slow drive in muddy siberia. that's what RDR2 is like. It's flight simulator on autopilot.

b376dd  No.16235255

>>16235230

I'm definitely not looking forward to the next GTA. V was already shallow with a short story with only 69 missions (a few of which were shit like buying masks) with pretty graphics over content and a boring map, now I bet they'll reuse all this detailed technology from RDR2 but with even more shallowness.

It's sad that Rockstar's most content-filled game is nearly 15 years old while the most detailed one is almost 11 years old at this point.

And they'll keep forcing their woke nihilism trying to actively shame and depress the audience by forcing them to play as and interact with disgusting, loathsome characters.

GTAIV was already bad in that regard, GTAV was even worse, VI is going to reach peak post-modernism.

As great as GTA IV was with its physics, detailed city and some of the best fictional cars I've ever seen it already had tons of bad traits that would evolve to the cancer that plagues AAA gaming today. Such as the shitty South Park esque social commentary on the radio (another reason GTAs set in the past are much better, I much rather prefer lighthearted nostalgic lampooning of the 80s or 90s), overly scripted missions (particularly jarring when the detailed Euphoria physics clash with obviously staged movement) and the lack of things to do (still better than V in that regard though, at least the gameplay was fun and it didn't have illusion of content).

its great at simulating cowboy, outlaw etc life way back then

plus it has some very detailed story and gameplay

problem is its mostly filler and padding, theres hardly anything happening that will make you, oh my god i remember when i did this there, its not very memorable except for specific scenes, nor is the gameplay very gripping because its just cowboy life, they arent doing anything unique with it

so what you have left is mostly bland open world, which is great at giving context to everything you are doing too bad its meh kind of context except for specific brilliant times

what i am trying to say is there no unique gameplay, its just another open world story game, except for ridiculous good production values

Don't forget watching KKK member burning himself in a comical fashion. They might as well should have made a Harold and Kumar the movie the video game if they want me to believe that their are KKK members during a period where their sentiment had died down and before the release of Birth of a Nation that started their resurgence. Even Mafia 3 had a better reason with a Black "Fuck White People" as a main protagonist. If there was something that shouldn't exist in the wild west, it should be virtue signaling. How is the west so progressive when it had none of that in the first game that came later in the story of RDRII?

I always have a gripe with these historical period piece style games that remove the flavor that made that past what it was. Call it revisionist if you want, I just think it's bad research if you even studied up on the history and still go it wrong and weak storytelling because you couldn't tell your story within the frames of the genre/setting/time period you're writing for. You can only get so much leeway that you might as well just make an alt history story if you can't be bothered to learn the preestablished rules, even in your own continuity.

b376dd  No.16235718

>>16235704

RDR was a deconstruction of the Western. The first part in New Austin is like an oldschool Western from the early 20th century. The part in Mexico is like a Spaghetti Western. The last part in West Elizabeth is like a more modern, unconventional Western with the whole theme of the Old West dying off fully kicking in since it's 1911.

RDR1 is still a full blown spaghetti western game. The spaghetti western setting is broader than mid-late 19th century era. RDR1 was inspired by Tomas Milian's movies like The Big Gundown, Companeros, and Tepepa. These westerns set in Mexican Revolution are called Zapata Westerns. Other spaghetti westerns in this vein include A Bullet for The General, Il Mercenario, Duck You Sucker, and Killer Kid.

Shit that sucked

<Every action takes for-fucking-ever (wanna skin this bear? watch this 30 second animation. wanna cook some meat? gotta wait 10 seconds for it to cook)

<Narrow mission design means you can't really tackle most missions in a creative way

<Equipment degradation means you have to constantly baby sit your guns. Wouldn't be a problem if you didn't have a dozen different weapons to take care of

<Retarded horse physics will send you crashing into trees or flying off of your horse

<Can't name your horse whatever you want in the singleplayer portion because profanity filters

<No fast travel (you can actually fast travel to locations from your camp if you have that map, but it's a one-way thing and you can't just bounce between locations)

<Absolutely fucktarded Law system where people will assault you right in front of a sheriff but the sheriff will shoot you as soon as you defend yourself. I've also gotten random CRIME WITNESSED alerts when I was just riding down the road not fucking doing anything

<Missions and side-quests are locked if bounty hunters are chasing you, but the game doesn't tell you that bounty hunters are chasing you. Now I know that this is signified by the red indicator on the minimap, but this was incredibly annoying and confusing in the beginning of the game because I couldn't figure out why I wasn't allowed to progress and mission markers just vanished

<Hunting is a chore and so is collecting pelts. They did do a good job adding a variety of wildlife though

<Typical survival meters (you are hot, you are cold, you are losing weight, babysit the player-character some more etc) I know some people like survival elements in games but I fucking don't so fuck off

Shit I liked

>The graphics are very good for a console game, stunningly so. I'm really curious to see how this is going to look on a PC, especially when people start modding it. The lighting is superb, the textures are great, plants and foilage react when you move through them, your horse will neigh in agitation if you ride it through bushes, you leave tracks in snow and mud, Arthur's clothes will get snow, dirt, mud, and blood on them over time, he'll sweat if you've been riding a while in the heat, all sorts of little details that are sorely missed in games.

>Rockstar made sure to actually make the world fun to explore since you can't fucking fast travel. There are all sorts of secrets you can find if you look for them. Viking ruins, murder scenes, dinosaur bones, you can get caught in hold-ups randomly, come across kidnappings, get drugged and robbed by that incestuous couple at the pig farm and all sorts of shit. People are still finding all of the secrets tucked away

>Feels like an actually complete game combined with a very lengthy epilogue to tie things with RDR1. I love it when you spend most of the time in a game fighting against a group or a person you think is the big bad, but they end up just being a loose end to tie up leading into the final cour of the story. By the time you get to that final stretch, the O'Driscolls and Cornwall are dwarfed as villains as Dutch starts to unravel and the gang splits apart. Voice acting, cutscene directions and shit like that are all pretty good, as you'd expect from Rockstar. I ended up liking Arthur more than John. A lot of his character is revealed in his notebook, not just cutscenes.

>Weapon customization is detailed and fun

>Side content is treated almost as well as the main missions, and you'll actually see one of the side content characters pop up again during a critical cutscene during the main story, if you helped them out

>Kind of ties in with the secrets in the world, but the game encourages you to go back to camp often. If you do, you'll see a lot of interactions between the different gang members and yourself that makes the camp feel alive and not just an NPC dump. Folks will get into fights, argue, tell stories around the camp fire. There's continuity in the interactions too. For instance, you'll see Hosea constantly press Bill to go out and do something for the gang. Bill will keep lazing about and drinking, earning him more scorn until he gathers up the drunken bravery to threaten Hosea to his face. Hosea will draw his gun and scare him back into submission though.

I enjoyed it once I accepted the game is deliberately trying to slow you down, because the game does reward you for taking your time with things. There's a lot to uncover if you just allow yourself to be a rooty tooty cowboy riding through the countryside, camping in the wilderness, and hanging around your gang members.

I checked that video and it seems to include the scripted horse rides to the missions and completing the missions, so there is some gameplay there. I assume it does all the main quests and their gameplay. I found another cutscene video that seems to cut a lot of the actual gameplay off and it's 16h25min. So out of the main story line about 7h 35min are actual gameplay and the rest is listening, following and watching. I'm not gonna bother seeing if he does the side quests or not. Now the average completion for the main story seems to be around 46 hours and if rushed around 32h. That video does not show the open world content at all or commuting from place to place so you could add another 10 hours of pushing x at least and let's say 5 hours for looting, crafting, shopping, modding equipment etc. So the time you spend doing virtually nothing stimulating is around 30ish hours out of 46. You're not that far off if you count deaths and retries shaving off a couple more hours.

I used a normalfag friend's copy to play it. Game was a boring slog, its in this awful spot where its trying to be a cowboy sim and still have all the action. Every animation takes 30 seconds to play out, looting a dead body isn't even worth the time anymore since you'll be there for 2 minutes if there's more than 3 people there.

Horse handling is awful. It was great in Redemption but I guess they felt the player had too much control over gameplay, because now the Horse will slow down and speed up when it pleases and has some kind of thrill from smashing its face into trees and other horses. I've watched the Horse AI actually fight me and take control of movements so that it could ram some trees.

The crime system is fucked. If someone draws on you first and you defend yourself and shoot the fucker, you're now chasing down 5 witnesses to 'murder'. Whereas in RDR1 you could unload every bullet you had into someone that started shit with you in a town.

Arthur is also shit. He hits every single note that John did, except he has no mind of his own and is dragged to his death because he bows down to Dutch no matter how much of an evil bastard you play him as. Really fucking stupid.I can't tell if the story is shit because Arthur is poorly written or if Arthur is shit because the story is poorly written. I'm sure there's some kind of equilibrium.

The only time I enjoyed playing it was the epilogue mission dedicated to Marston fanservice with music from Redemption and the cover art pose with the sawn-off shotgun. It was really tiring watching the game castrate him to prop up Arthur, so seeing Rockstar's last good protaganist get some silver lining to his fate in this 'game' was something at least.

The funny thing is, I forgot this game even existed until I saw this thread. And I've been sitting here for half an hour trying to remember anything but the epilogue, and the only part that isn't foggy for me is the tropical island you wash up on. Also

The original Doom was given that title for a while. Same with Half Life 2, even though I thought HL2 was a little overrated, I liked that It was able to maintain it's placement for a few years.
