As a former fan of the musou games, I'd say Samurai Warriors 2 is the best place to start. It's solid, it's got content, it's got musashi miyamoto, it's on PC. SW3 is better, but it's a wii exclusive so you gotta emulate it. Warriors Orochi 1 is appealing for being a crossover, but it's also broken as shit and you're going to lose because your incompetent "leader" is going to get his ass kicked no matter what you do.

Now, you might argue Dynasty Warriors is the father series to Samurai Warriors and therefore you should play it first, but Dynasty Warriors Extreme Legends Special Edition is pretty much the ultimate incarnation of that series. There is very little point in playing any game prior to that, but for information's sake, be aware that Dynasty Warriors 1 is actually a fighting game, and the actual musou series started with DW2, which I had a blast with on the PS2. Also, that DW6 fucked with the combat system and was reviled as a result, and that DW9 did even worse. But don't touch anything from SW4 onward.

Completely underdevelopped tactical aspect, it basically followed the manga to a fault and forgot to be a musou game. It still has playable Casca so it's not worthless.

This. Guts is a fun character to play as and the story is pretty good if you haven't read the manga as it incorporates the good anime bits to the Eclipse. But there's not much to do after you've completed it. And it doesn't have that large a roster to make you want to use other characters.

Thinking of trying Arslan again. I gave it up as I was being bored of it but I've got time now and wondering if it's worth it.

Dynasty Warriors 8 Complete Edition is what you're looking for as far as a start to the series, but for DMC style crazy you'd want Sengoku Basara 4 Sumeragi, which is a series that has close ties to the DMC series developers.

4-II is literally a DLC pack sold as a full game. Everything is wrong with it.

The gundam musou games are pretty fun. 2 has the best character crossovers and has more classic styled DW gameplay, Reborn probably has the best gameplay if you prefer the newer styled DW gameplay though.

This, it's kinda hard to recommend SW4, given that it has like 4 spin offs and none of them really feel complete.

Two questions

>Why was the Fate musou so fucking ass? It started off really good by having everyone move at lightspeeds and have dashing attacks and triple jumps, but it quickly went to shit by having movesets unlock at a snails pace as well as a general lack of them by the end of a character's campaign. Also the music sucked

Is there any Musou game that tried to be original and not based on history/literature/manga/anime works? And also not dropping tactical aspect and becoming One-Man Slasher like Berserk Musou did.

On second thought, Soul Calibur Musou. I'm aware of legends but we're talking about having mooks on our side, allied heroes and simpleton tactics.

dw4h is bretty gud, just don't duel Lu Bu if your attack level is low or you will be not able to flinch him. Remember to parry.

No replay value, no incentives to use the other characters, censored story (violence yes, sex no), no tactics above button mashing at all, extremely linear, no interesting side activities, very short. It's a one and done game for fans only and highly forgettable.

I only got into musou games recently on PC and my favorite so far is Dragon Quest Heroes 2.

You can just play the PS2 Dynasty Warriors games on emulator minus the sixth game and call it a day. Supposedly 7 and 8 are decent as well but they did have some changes to officers and their weapons. The PS2 DW games are very underrated and very fun games. Even the expansions are pretty good.
