Anyone else also getting exhausted from all these old-school retro shooters flooding the market nowadays? There is DUSK, Ion Maiden, Amid Evil, Overload, Prodeus, the Turok remasters, the Descent reboot, the Blood remaster, and also this one that's built on the actual Quake 1 engine, but looks more like another Quake mission pack with a new skin.
I mean, I guess it is an improvement over the era of 2001-2017 where all shooters became hitscan-only and level design fell to the wayside in favor of cinematic setpieces and puzzle-like gimmicks in the form of superpowers, so of course more of the same when first-person shooters were still good is a breath of fresh air. But now it's like any new FPS that can be qualified as good nowadays must be a Doom/Quake/Duke/Heretic/whatever clone, and they're all starting to blend together. Most of them have slightly different weapons/enemy types/settings to stand out, but when you come down to it they all play identically (with the exception of Overload because 6DoF games are an actual rarity) and share the same philosophy for level/enemy design.
These games aren't looking bad, but they're just not selling me on why I would want to play them over a custom WAD in Doom or a Quake mission pack. Having actual good shooters for once by aping good old shooters is a novelty that will have to wear off eventually as long as they don't decide to shake up the formula. It's kind of telling that 25 years after Doom that the only good shooters are those which take directly after Doom or its ilk. Meanwhile good modern platformers aren't just Mario clones, good modern shoot 'em ups aren't just Gradius clones, and so on.
I'd just like to see a shooter try something different, and the only ones to do so in recent memory are Devil Daggers, DESYNC, and ironically nuDoom.
