To begin with, I just wanted to say, fuck Daggerfall. I love that game but I have made 5 fucking attempts at the main quest, and every fucking time some catastrophic bullshit will happen that will perma-fuck my save file(s) or even my whole installation for fuck's sake.

I don't know what to do with Argonians. I can't figure out what motivates them. All the background and "lore" plays up how alien they are, but nothing happens with them very much it seems. Nords, Dark elves, High Elves and Bretons all have big players and often play big roles in events, but Argonians, they're like Gnomes in D&D, they're just kinda "there" and superfluous.

It's already nearly feature complete, they are working on vampirism now and I think they still have lycanthropy to go. Something like 95% of magical effects are implemented. There's also a ton of neat stuff and quality of life shit, for example an improved climbing system and better enemy AI, namely mages. I would actually recommend this version to new players. The fonts in particular look miles better and the load times are literally instant. It's just a better "playing Daggerfall" experience without changing a whole lot.

This would come under "bugfix". See attached pic. In the original game your class attributes overwrite the intended racial modifiers that were supposed to be applied, meaning race becomes a strictly aesthetic choice with the exception of High Elves, who are immune to paralysis, and Nords, who are resistant to cold damage. This is why everyone plays High Elves.

Since DF Unity is already getting a modding scene i really want a mod that fixes thievery.
The most functional and profitable way to "steal" things in Daggerfall is the exploit where you just wait inside a shop until it closes and then take everything inside. Pickpocketing only gives you a few coins, most houses you can break into only hold like two common clothes and absolutely nothing else, and shoplifting is shit.
I think wizardry also needs a fix, with restore power potions being a fuckton weaker than healing ones and nearly every fucking common enemy somehow being able to fully absorb 90% of your destruction spells. Vanilla DF was pretty biased towards Warriors.
>>16207796
The series is more about the conflicts between Elves and Humans, i'm pretty sure they always wanted the beast races to be side stuff but kept them in anyways to stick out from other fantasy worlds at the time.
And like Akavir, Bethesda will just keep making Black Marsh as complex and incompatible to the games as possible so that they don't have to put effort on making a game about said cool argonian lore. It's not like we're in 2003 and most normalfags would want to play a game with creepy dark swamps instead of mountains/plains and humans not being the centre of the show anyways.

Mages are extremely hard at the start and get easier later like most other RPGs. The thing I hate is that magic is unviable unless you take like fifty advantages and disadvantages that turn you into an arcane autist who is afraid of iron and has to recite his ABCs every time he touches a door knob. The min maxing in general for that game is very egregious.
247532 No.16208258
Daggerfall still my favorite.
As in many games, the world is designed for the player, many things, like dungeons, shops and houses are placed with convenience in mind, after all the world around is perfectly organized to suit your needs, right?
In Daggerfall, this doesn't happen, the world is not there for you, the towns are full of people doing their stuff, business are spread all over with different prices on the same merchandise and even the crappiest dungeon can take hours to complete. It requires patience and persistence. Unfortunately, due to many bugs and system flaws, you can't totally immerse yourself in this world, you need to keep safe saves, choose just a sub-set of skills because many are useless, spells like floating is required to beat the game…
The perfect open world RPG would be like Daggerfall with better skills selection and less technical bugs.

Levitation isn't strictly essential, but it's easy to get stuck without it. Every main quest dungeon (and most random ones) where it's required will have a way to grant you temporary flight by interacting with some random doodad like a hanging chain.
In fact I would go so far as to say that you are missing out if you use levitation at all in the final dungeon, since it was so well designed with puzzles and paths to advance, and levitation lets you just skip over most of it.

HOLD IT RIGHT THERE SHITSTAIN
I'll have you know that Daggerfall's dungeons are still the absolute best when it comes to exploration puzzles that the player must solve, for that verticality alone.
No other game is unafraid to drop a player down a vertical shaft that they may not even have the means to return from, because you shouldn't have been a retard and ignored the options for vertical movement. They aren't frequent at all and the game gives you more than enough dungeons which have pitfall traps with conventional exits to let you know that they exist, and you should worry about them being more difficult.
No other game would trap the player with a teleport tile with no visual or aural cues that sends the player into a similar-looking hallway in a completely different lower wing of the dungeon, and the only way to get back is by scaling a vertical shaft.
I have never seen a game that comes close to challenging my sense of exploration problem solving in this regard. I'm not going to praise the generator too much because the specific example I listed is from one of the handmade dungeons in Daggerfall, but it is a good dungeon regardless.

I'm going to be honest, the games just don't look appealing to me and I don't got any problems playing old retro games. I actually prefer them. These TES games though do not look that good so it puts me off trying them. I think it is safe to say that Bethesda didn't really build the identity of this franchise until Morrowind and that is probably how most would see it. Even those casuals that didn't jump on the bandwagon until Skyrim would probably also see it like this. I was absolutely immersed in gaming in the 90's and had no clue TES series was even a thing until I got interested in playing Morrowind.
If these games looked and played a lot better with all those game breaking bugs/glitches fixed as well as them being streamlined a bit I would probably be interested. I played Hexen and Heretic and just looking at these TES games I can tell they don't play as smoothly as those games or Doom, Duke and plenty of those old school FPS and Doom clones for that matter. These TES games just look so unapproachable unless you grew up with it.
Also you made me go check /vr/ and yeah that is a really dead board. The top thread was a thread made in 2015 and a lot of those threads I tried going to aren't even available anymore despite still appearing on the catalog since they are so old.

I urge you to try DF Unity. It's only missing a few magic effects and a few minor features from the original game and it runs very smoothly, with nicer looking fonts. I think the most major thing is the fact that magic items won't work until they finish the very last effect but they only have 6 effects to go. They still have great sell value and you can still cast all the available spell effects.
I feel awkward shilling for it but if "smooth-as-Doom" is what you're looking for and is the only thing preventing you from playing, DF Unity does that. You can install graphics mods of all types too, although many of them are not in the best taste.

Well, I started out with Morrowind too, but I still enjoy, and maybe even prefer the older games. I wouldn't hesitate to name Daggerfall my favourite if it wasn't for the fact I have so much trouble just keeping it stable.
I think the split in the fanbase actually has a lot to do with the place of "exploration" in the series. Arena and Daggerfall were simply never about exploration. I think the huge, practically endless map was primarily intended to be an aid to immersion, so that you would never bump into an arbitrary barrier that would immediately remind you that you're playing a computer game. Having such a large map, and one teaming with paper thin, but nonetheless interactive NPCs also helped introduce an element of abstraction, one realized that you weren't necessarily seeing a perfect representation of what was actually happening the game world. The game itself is just a sort of interface.
It was Morrowind that brought exploration of the actual geography of the game world as a possible motivation or play style to the series. Oblivion and Skyrim developed even further along these lines, more or less removing the element of abstraction that was less emphasised, bur still present in Morrowind.

For modding I recommend you follow the STEP guide here: https://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.10.0
Although the big idea is for it to be its own comprehensive list of mods to install, it's also about showing you how to set up mods properly and guiding you through all the tools you need to get your mods working right (and you do need all of them) in the process, so I do highly recommend it even if you're iffy about going through the whole list of mods in it.
Aside from that, if you're feeling brave I can recommend you a couple major mods that I've been really meaning to check out myself:

Oh, right, so there are two versions of the game - Legendary Edition, the old version, and Special Edition, the new version.
Mods aren't compatible out of the box between one version and the other, but most mods are available for both versions and all mods (with the exception of SKSE addons that are closed-source) can be ported from one version to another. I haven't played Special Edition, but I've been meaning to make my next playthrough be in Special Edition since it's supposed to remove a lot of the performance bottlenecks that Legendary Edition has. So, with that said: Legendary Edition is the version I know, but Special Edition is the version I'd recommend.
Just one thing I didn't realise until now is that the STEP guide I linked in my last post is for Legendary Edition, not Special Edition, but there's this guide for Special Edition here that I think is along the same lines and that includes a lot of the same guidance about what tools you need and about how to set mods up properly: https://thephoenixflavour.com/
As for actually getting the game… I'm just with a private tracker, so I couldn't tell you where to get it otherwise, but I can tell you to make sure you get the latest version of the game since the game's version does matter for SKSE and for any SKSE addons.

This time around I'm playing a Dark Elf Ranger because I want to hit like a truck (Dark Elves get a bonus to hit and damage equal to their level divided by 4, and Rangers get a bonus to damage equal to their level).
My plan is to to finish Arena, then Daggerfall and maybe Battlespire, though I'm not sure my patience can hold out for that one.

Why?

>miss miss miss
Completely valid. Even though its been memed that doesnt change the fact that it was a POOR implementation of the classic system. Whether that was due to tech or skill or time is irrelevant.
>Graphics
I would unironically say better than Oblivion but that games has a species place in my heart of hate. Still incredibly outdated and only indoors housing does it look good.

If you haven't played the game back when its a horrible adjustment.

Valid placing in bingo aka the directions are fine

It is indeed mostly tone deaf.

This is a matter of world lore vs separately written stories deal. Both have their down and up side.

They are but thats not a negative, valid placing in bingo

The system is dogshit. The stealth design stops at the first layer: It exists.

Thats quite the open large margin. But the animations are pure dogshit though.

proper placement in bingo

Not really, proper placement

The roll mechanic was pointless. The good thing though is that it did have a level cap as far as I remember but that was watered down by the roll. So broken? Maybe. Shit? Definitely.

Reminder that there will never exist a good TES game. From Oblivion onwards every single game released in this series is, and will be, shallow, unambitious, uncreative, forgettable trash.
Reminder that Bethesda squanders every opportunity given to them, and will never muster the competence to produce a truly outstanding videogame regardless of the franchise, setting or allocated budget.
Reminder that this is what normalfags want and will pay full price for, over and over again, until the sun swallows the earth, and there is nothing you can do about it.

The thing is that you usually have an excess of animators/graphic designers in modding communities. They just want to make their cool architecture and leave it to the guys who can code to figure out how to fit it all together.
4474f6 No.16282983
>>16282527
That doesn't make much sense. The interior and exterior decoration stuff is easy as all hell to piece together, no coding required, just a bit of jank trying to place things neatly and exactly. Dialogue is also easy to add in. The only hard part about Morrowind modding is the scripting. Or basic terrain and cell editing if you're stuck using OpenMW-CS, as that lacks terrain editing apart from texturing, and you can't link cells with doors from what I recall. OpenMW's interface is a lot cleaner though, and its form filling is more intuitive than the original TES CS, which requires you to drag stuff around. Only function for general purpose modding that is lacking is sub-options for the various menus, so you don't have to ctrl+f for specific entries you want to edit or view.
