Because new releases kept getting 4Kids-tier localizations, more and more people are opting to play the Japanese versions instead. If you're one of those people, which was the very first game you decided to play in moon runes? Was it really worth it to study a whole new language for it?

For me, it was Paper Mario TTYD. It was ok . Slight differences, but nothing major.

The most recent game I played in Japanese was Alpha Sapphire. Even if you have the English version, newer Pokemon games let you choose which language you want to play it in. Japanese included. When you feel more confident about your Japanese, the option will be there waiting.

First game I played and finished was Lufia 2 (エストポリス伝記2), seeing as it was a favourite from when I was a lad. Then I played through the SNES remake of Dragon Quest 1.

I played a few hours of Zero no Kiseki, because I really want to continue on from Trails in the Sky. But that game has vocab and kanji that make even Japanese people go "lolwut?!". So I've put that on the backburner for now. Will probably try FFVII next as it's another favourite from childhood and someone dumped an excel sheet with nearly all the dialogue in both English and Japanese. I think it was 魔導物語 はなまる大幼稚園児

Game starts out pretty great but around the end it became a real slog to do the fetch quests that you're forced to put off, really makes it feel like they just wanted to pad out the length at the end there. Then again I did do some optional extra shit that I really didn't need to. I'll be damned if it didn't feel satisfying to beat the shit out of devil at the end with a lvl 4 diacute + insta-max diacute ring and lvl 4 firestorm.

It DID get me into Madou Monogatari and, by extension, Puyo Puyo. Jesus, I had never actually heard of Puyo Puyo before so seeing it for the first time was some shit. It was truly the gift that kept on giving, and just when you think its over there's ANOTHER GAME to play.

But the real wording is more like

Valkyria Chronicles 3 back when it came out and no one was even talking about a fan translation.

I had already finished 2 recently and the interface options were nearly identical, so I was able to beat it without knowing a single word of Jap.

There was a blog which thankfully had translations for the potentials, so that was helpful.

Obviously, I didn't understand a word of what the characters were saying, but I still "read" through all of the scenes, which boiled down to watching their reactions and listening to the tone of their voices.

Dragon Quest 1 on the SNES has no furigana, but it's not a long game and if you know how to look up words/kanji you don't know, it's quite simple to go through in terms of grammar. Except maybe the king. He talks in a sort of old-fashioned dramatic way that might throw you for a loop.

I live in Okayama, and the funny thing is old people in media tend to use a lot of わし and じゃ. So to me the king in DQ almost read like he was just speaking Okayama-ben.

I'd suggest starting out with games you can emulate. Like SNES era or earlier. That way you can pause the emulator if you need more time to read textboxes that auto-advance. Also if you have a dual-monitor set-up it's real easy to have game on one screen and jisho.org/anki on the other.

That or Nintendo proactively changed it to prevent any possible infraction. If (now outdated) videos about Earthbound VC releasing issues are anything to go by, legal teams of a company try to foresee potential infringements and circumvent before it comes up for real– as in better to not go to court in the first place than have a possible case, even if miniscule. Basically Nintendo might have played it TOO safe when making the change, but one of their own lawyers might have told them "Better safe than sorry".

…unless having some more obvious Playboy bunny analogue would have made the old reviewers at ESRB bump the rating up to Teen during a time of no E10+. The international versions also cut out a Toad chalk outline in the bandit town.

First game I played in Japanese was either Final Fantasy 8, Parasite Eve or Ergheiz.

Reason for that is back in the late 90s in Europe, we would get Japanese games months after they'd be released in Japan/US. So I'd go to an import store to play them early, and then get the EU version later.

I remember that because the games were NTSC, you'd need a converted to get the games working with a PAL tv, which would strip the colour out. So I'd be sitting there playing weeby games in black and white, and didn't understand a fuckin word of it. Fun times.

Danganronpa 2. Not exactly the best choice for a first game because it requires more vocab than most children's games and the share thread version has no JP script, but it's not pain and suffering either. I compared it with the localization now and then and from what I could tell, there was no FE tier fuckery, but there were a few big mistranslations like well-used but cleaned clothes turning into dirty clothes and "unlike Komaeda I used one bullet" turning into "unlike Komaeda I only did it once", even though hopeman didn't do it multiple times to begin with. The rest of the translation seemed okay, though not particularly well done.

I think the first game I played in Japanese, after learning to read it that is, is the original Final Fantasy. I wanted something with a good deal of text but none of that "scary" kanji. That was six years ago though and I'm not particularly bothered by kanji in games anymore, I prefer it to kanji-less games.

>Was it really worth it to study a whole new language for it?

Definitely, I've played a lot of games in Nip and and have some interesting experiences. Some games that had shoddy localizations made more sense, and I first experienced Dragon Quest in Japanese as well. Looking at the localizations, I'm REALLY glad I was able to play them in Japanese.

I play games in Japanese most of the time anymore, but the only series that I'm even a little intimidated by anymore is the Kiseki series because I'm afraid I'm gonna find an 80 page short story in the Crossbell/Sen games like I did TiTS (which I played in English a few years ago, I'm thinking of going back through them in Japanese, it'd be a good excuse to play the Evo versions).

There are the rare exceptions of Japanese games I'll play in English, like Resident Evil because it just feels more fitting, or Dark Souls, though from what I've read about DS2's localization, I should play them all in Japanese too, because some of 2 sounds really poorly done. Too bad the English copy of Bloodborne can't be switched to Japanese. Then again, I've read that you can't play the English copy of DS2 in Japanese either.

Not really/ I've played the first 6 and ALBW in Japanese and well, aside from censorship in dialogue in ALTTP, some weird dialogue changes in the first like replacing a hint with "10th enemy has the bomb", and some really tiny things, they aren't that bad. I mean, the early. ALBW had a lot of random ass changes that I noticed just by watching some Youtube videos of the English version and reading about how they took out the Zora worrying over their queen getting fat and ugly. Just started BOTW in Japanese, so I don't know but a little bit about that and the bit about Ganon in ending.
