FRLG is Gen 3, it's mechanically RSE. While it's still leagues above RGBY it still suffers from balance issues (namely, physical/special damage being assigned to types as a whole: Ghost attacks being physical and Dark being special being the most notorious mistakes), but at least you have more moves and the old ones aren't retarded like Wrap.

Diamond was the last pokemon game that I played. The series got bloated to hell and shouldn't have stayed in its established formula for multiple games. It's too simple to keep me as an adult entertained when SMT exists, but the gameboy and gameboy advanced games still have a certain charm to them. I enjoyed Silver the most, and it was my first. What's the best romhack for that? I might take a trip down memory lane.

The only romhack i've played is glazed and i dropped it at the elite 4's doorstep, there's a dojo right next to the E4 that lets you train your mons for a small fee in case they're underleveled or you wanna raise a new one from scratch, what's the problem with this? That for a measly 10k pokeshekels or so per pokemon you can powerlevel them to 100 in 20 minutes, because "training" means beating up 6 chanseys that only use physical moves.

Anything like polished crystal? I like choosing your own mon at first via a list. Feels more personal.

I feel like there should be a whole archive of these put up on the share thread or something because finding some of these are an absolute nightmare.

For a literal shitpost Pokemon Clover is really well made, and decently challenging as well.

Pokemon Prism is fun, and Blazed Glazed is fun too. I hear Pokemon Gaia is the next big rom-hack everyone's waiting for.

To me, the best romhack is Pokemon (up to gen 4) Randomized. I love giving the trainers random OP shit for the challenge, and wild grass potentially being full of game-wiping pokemon is refreshing, truly.

It's mostly complete now, or at least it goes up to the elite four, there's just no postgame yet. And yeah it's pretty great already, decently long despite being unfinished and the region's pretty interesting to explore and has what I think is nice level design. I also managed to give more of a shit about it's plot than the mainline games.

Main complaint I have is that the latest version removed some things. There were a couple of routes that were really long and complicated and they cut them down to basically nothing. Not sure why they did it, but it detracts from the whole adventurous feeling.

Prism is awesome. Feels like a real game, and in some ways, just better. I started Red++ 3.0 too and got a shiny Squirtle as my starter, but 4.0 is in the works as a rework over Crystal… I might have to forego playing that if I want to keep him. The story starts out as Gold/Silver. I'm about halfway through the Kanto part of that right now. They added new characters into the story throughout (TV show and other generations' characters), and they actually did a fine job of it. Jessie/James and Butch/Cassy are recurring Team Rocket fights. That part of the anime where the SS Anne sinks is part of the story, so that's kind of cute. Kanto is more fleshed out, and it's where all the Battle Tower shit has been moved. There are a lot of locked doors… I wonder if they plan to open them eventually. All the legendaries have "side story" elements to them. I've passed by a couple of the Regi shrines so far, for example, and there are new Braille signs in Dragon's Cave in Johto.

It's not edgy, it's not wacky, I played as a girl so Wally (from Gen III) is apparently in love with me, Brendan and May are here, Zinnia makes an appearance as your primary rival (the red-headed Pokemon thief is still in the game) who follows you around all the regions… I'm liking it so far. I would prefer a bit more Pokémon variety in each patch of grass/water, but there will have to be more variety later since all 800 are in the game. It's apparently not DONE yet, story wise. They're most of the way through Hoenn, which is the end so far, but it's still being updated. They just added Meltan and Melmetal, for example.

The starters are given their hidden abilities, so keep that in mind if you want any challenge. I picked Torchic and unintentionally gave myself easy mode with Speed Boost/Bulk Up. Shedinja was a pain to get because I wanted Swords Dance, which Ninjask doesn't learn until lv45 in this game instead of lv25 in the original. (The 20 levels of saved experience also helped in making my playthrough even more ridiculously easy.)

As much as I hate grinding for arbitrary numbers, I do think it adds depth for "hardcore" players. I had a friend who spent months on one of the new games just trying to breed perfects and he seemed to find it rewarding. Considering it doesn't take that long to beat the main story with random shit you catch, raising pokemon for their IVs/natures/EVs is a lot of content for the people that care.

Fanfiction only sucks because it's made by shitty amateurs. If a decent writer was to write fanfiction it might be worth a read. Romhacks are the same way, occasionally someone decent comes along and makes a hack that's fun.

There's also the fact that romhacks don't have to be written completely from scratch like fanfiction. Many hacks are just small tweaks and alterations to improve upon the base game. It doesn't have to be all OCs and fakemons.

It's actually harder to play with a full team of 6 because you have to split the EXP 6 ways if you want to use all of them. Speedrunners typically only use 1 Pokémon, occasionally 2. 3-4 is ideal for a casual playthrough.

I think there's a romhack called Pokemon Platinum Origin or something that just lets you catch all pokemon and functions as a slightly improved version of the regular Pokemon Platinum. I got pretty tired of it once I had 8 badges. You can access the elite four at that point, but they're all level 60+ so you'll want to keep levelling up before you fight them. Problem is, normal trainers mostly stop scaling at that point so the only way to gain levels is to grind gym rematches.
