Let's talk about things that make you smile every time you see them in video games.

>NPCs begin to recognize you and start being thankful towards you when you play a hero in a game and you start becoming more famous Remember Baldur's Gate doing that

>You try to get to the villain, destroying his/her troops and his/her defences, as he/she starts taunting you with voice messages, telling you to give up, but you can hear that they're shitting their pants as you come closer to facing off with themMax Payne did this

>Enemies are scared shitless of you Both Max Payne and FEAR did this

What are your favourite examples /v/?

And then you grab them by the ears and reform with a good pounding? Good taste.

First one has a better vibe/story, second has better gameplay but was designed for co-op. Also I've seen Tale of Wuxia mentioned once in a blue moon so you may have not tried that one. It's chinkmade and the translation is a bit janky but there are multiple routes that branch to that particular deep dark fantasy of yours. There's even an option to turn the tables on one of the main antagonists with a straight up you think you're evil, little girl? Let me show you true evil. Corny, I know. But highly entertaining.Yes, you even get to keep her as a pet of sorts afterwards if you spare her life

I like it when you can demolish the bad guy's setup piece by piece and it has gameplay impact. In Outcast you could raid a mining operation in an optional quest and it made enemies ration grenades.

>Enemies are scared shitless of you

Something the first Darksiders did right, albeit the enemies would start out talking shit (which has some merit with War's depowering), but cutting a swath through them does unnerve them, and hearing one of the last alive in a group shouting in despair about how War's still too strong was a nice touch.

>>16143386

It's a sad state of things when that in its own right is a notable factor. Add in lacking pop culture references and real world memes too.

>>16143411

Worth mentioning that there's a solid difference between fans attributing meme status to something within a game without the devs having tried to do so themselves (Xenoblade Wii and MGR being good examples with enjoyable quips to quote), and shoehorning in doge and such and artificially dating their work to a specific period (and in which said memes are likely years stale already).

Yes Nate Denver is probably the tied with Ray Kreiger as the worse King and the TXR final boss is an homage to Wagan Midnight. Still cool to see them

I like loot and I like looting. Not in real life, but in the video games. Fuck I love that game more and more with every passing year. I really, truly need to go on and play more of the series, but it's hard because I suspect not a one of them will be better than 3. 1 certainly wasn't.

From what I recall Wild Arms 2 does it as well, though the western version lacks any lyrical versions of songs within the game, though depending on who you ask, they'll call it a good thing. Anyhow, I really like the main series on the whole (though 4 is a definite low point), but 2 and 3 are my favorites. And in terms of general fan opinion, at least on imageboards over the years, 1-3 are the ones series fans tend to have at least one of which be their favorite, so I'd at least recommend giving 2 a go. Has a similar "uses FP not MP" system as WA3, as well as the Personal Skill System, but both are a bit less refined (namely the latter being permanent, and stat boosting ones being cumulative from level acquired and thus an emphasis on what stats to prioritize bonus gain in character build).

Try hitting Todd with some fire damage next time you replay 3, if you haven't tried that before, and see what happens.

>On-topic, and something this game reminded me about as well. I love it when the game has an animated OP that changes as you progress through the game. Every single time I boot up WA3 I watch the intro fully.

WA2 has multiple openings as well, but less an evolving opening and more of a "Season 1" and "Season 2" sort of thing, completely changing the animation and song between them. Was a nice surprise to suddenly get blasted with "Resistance Line" the first time I booted up disc two, disc one having had "You'll Never Be Alone, No Matter Where You Are" for its opening.

I just love playing dress ups. It's never as fun when you can only change a couple of things about your character, I like making a character from scratch and deciding every little thing about their appearance. If I'm playing an RPG it takes me forever to get into the game and start having fun if I am given a set character to play.

>you failed the mission but may continue doing shit

I liked Perfect Dark for that.

Something I like is having a game that feels videogame-y, especially humor or writing. So many games try to emulate blockbusters with snappy comebacks and witty quips, with very mixed results. I like it when a game has its own identity and insane/out-there humor that feels different or unusual, instead of standard fare, even worse if it's just "haha, did you get that reference?", which is why I greatly soured on Skullgirls , it's just throwing references but has no identity and can only stand on the girls' designs. A recent example of weird, kinda unique humor was Lisa. Sure, it has loads of wrestling references, but it was mostly in the names or moves, but shit like the bulldozer guy and his failures at life was goddamn hilarious.

I really liked how you had to interact with individual pockets and pouches of killed enemies in the original Metro 2033 to loot them, taking someone's magazine pouch to get their ammo felt a lot more like actually looting than just "using" them to access their inventory like in most games.

Shame they removed that for the sequel.

Man those are cute characters.

What do I like in games… its hard to point what I like. Here's one, Trails in the Sky 1 (as I'm playing currently) does something good which makes me actually enjoy reading main story text.

Every new town you go to, you know the reason why you are journeying, to visit each Guild branch and be commended from your work in the region. But with each town you meet up with new people, who introduce you to the area. Many things happen, and its a good mix of a few fun hours per town. Good pacing.

So, pacing. If you get pacing right, you want to come back day after day and progressing. I stopped 2 days ago due to the wolf monsters being way OP, its like 2vs8 and they will literally 2 hit you, and have 2x speed meaning they hit you twice for every 1 character attack.

Kingdom Come has good pacing. Narratives require good pacing.

The only GBA game I know that ends early if you play it on easy is Contra and, ironically, it also had its hardest difficulty removed when it was ported to GBA. Zero games never did anything like that, and only Zero 4 had easy mode in the frist place.

And that incident was something comparatively recent, so it wasn't anything for GBA.

There are three Mega Man games that change their story based on the difficulty you play, and none of them are in the Zero series. X5's difficulty setting affects the probability of whether the Enigma and Shuttle will successfully destroy Eurasia, which means it affects the odds of whether you lose Zero and which ending you'll get. In X8, you don't get to fight the plot twist final boss if you play on Easy. If you beat ZX:A on the highest difficulty it gives you an extra sequel hook cutscene.

Could have sworn I'd heard it was one of the zeroes, with a journofag complaining about a lack of resolution to the plot and promptly being called out on playing on easy.

It probably wasn't that, but Gunstar Super Heroes for GBA changes its dialogue between difficulties. Easy mode has less text, and the writing itself is simplified to make it easier for retards. I could have sworn that its final boss was locked to Hard mode, too, but this is never mentioned anywhere, so I might be wrong.

Games with a lot of options in the options menu. If you can change the colour mode, enable/disable SFV, VFX, BGM etc., change movement and button layouts, screen ratios, shit like that. Most of the time I hardly change a thing but I like to have the ability to.

High skill ceiling games. Ninja Gaiden on the Xbox and higher gen and to a lesser extent Bayonetta come to mind.

Advanced movement. Bhopping comes to mind. Speaking of, probably gonna open up CS:S tonight and run some maps.

Rhythm games in general. Crypt of the Necrodancer was a nice hybrid of rhythm/action that I still play today. I have Im@s SS installed on my tablet and was a former LL:SiF oldfag.

Double Dragon II on the NES

When the game knows you can beat an encounter handily so just gives you the xp/gold instead of doing the entire battle animation.

On a similar note, all bosses that have the same basic moveset and properties as the player and are rivals throughout the game are always top-notch

>you transcend yourself while in the game or in the ending

How I love that thing…

This only appeases more and more my childish behavior in life.I'm still virgin at 32, but I don't want to grow up just to get pussies.

<Getting in water while on fire puts the fire out

If a game didn't do this, I'd stop playing it.

<Game autistically tracks stats, not just play time but even shit like collection percents for areas and types of items

This. I'm making a game and this is one of my goals.

>aiming without the sights still goes straight instead of using rng cone spreads

>#+1 mag sizes, and remembers if a mag has less than full capacity

>reload canceling has an actual animation instead of going straight from state 1 to state 2

I really like how DoI did the weapons, too bad the multiplayer's mostly dead and there's no story mode, only training bots

Going back in time to help yourself after being helped by a future version of yourself, to prevent a paradox. Gradius 5 and Timesplitters: Future Perfect did this in magnificent ways.
