(Proper OP edition)
What the fuck is this nerd shit?
Haven and Hearth is a oldschool autistic survival MMO with a shared, persistent world, plagued by /v/, Russians, and normalfags alike, and barely held together by two Swedes, Javascript, and prayers.
>Free to play, between 600-1400 active players at a time
>Variety of playstyles, can PvP, build a farm, wander the land and explore, minmax gear grinder, or just be a shitter
<Steep learning curve, but it feels rewarding applying what you've learned
If you want to play with someone, you have to ask for someone to create a Hearth Secret for you to join them. If you make a character and join the world, it is too late and you must make an alt or drown yourself. However, for first time players, it might be worth making a throwaway character to learn the basic mechanics in a (relatively) safe environment.
What's New
>World 11 is now live! (February 1st)
>Notable changes include rebalanced FEP for foods and a giant ocean

Does anyone know why the Symbel bonuses change depending on if you click the table without sitting in a chair vs. when you do? For example, pic related, the "correct(?)" value is 82%/3% when I sit in a chair. Do we have to upgrade our chair or something?
3fd869 No.16140656
I think I messed something up. Right now, I have 3 claims/bases.
>Bottom right was my starter base, by a river. It has a small field surrounded by cliffs and isn't very good anymore.
>Top is a new farm project I made on grasslands, it has several 5x5 fields all cozied up together (still needing a beehive). I intended to make an orchard here. There is preparation for a palisade.
>Bottom left is my cave base. This was intended to be a secure area away from griefers, but it's already been found out. It has a palisade, but the entrance could be claimed and this would fuck me up considerably.
My problem is that with growing trees, I only can really put them by my first shitty cave base. Grasslands apparently has slower tree growth, which is bad for me because I need to improve trees over several generations. Space is very good there, however. So basically, where's the better spot to put trees? Should I make a 4th claim in the deeper forest and abandon my first area?

Chairs have their own hidden values as well. I'm trying to figure out why my better quality and type of chair and type and symbelware, and in better condition, was offering 4% worse hunger mod than someone else.
Also that's a hell of a bonus. I don't have anything quite that nice yet. I'm still getting 92% hunger / 1% bonus I don't have any better wood yet and I feel way behind and disappointed.

>Added an experience when seeing whales.
>Added "Oyster", bivalve mollusk.
>Added "Jellyfish", derpy 'lil thang.
>Added Aurochs Skeleton
<the jellyfish spawn in rivers
Key Fixes
>Reworked infected sores. Infected sores are now an overlay applied to a particular wound, rather than a wound in and of itself. Using soap on the infection stops it from growing worse while the "Lathered" buff lasts (longer the better quality soap you have), and using a Camomille Compress on the infection stops the infection permanently. Infected wounds can be treated as normal, but the infection now makes the wound itself grow worse. Hopefully adressing concerns raised here.
>Fixed a bug with Nidbanes attacking outlaws sleeping in beds.
>You now need to have gathered a lifetime total of at least 10k LP, and have the Hearth Magic skill, before you will receive your first (A Whisper on the) Wind quest. You will stop automatically receiving quests if you cut down Wind quest givers that you have quests to, but will still be able to use commune with nature to get quests.
>Made it so that there is a hefty delay on receiving new wind quests if you abandon or fail one.
<good shit overall, all of your infected wounds are gone
Small Fixes
>Fixed a bug by which you would collect all scents in a given spot by collecting one of them, even if you could only see some of them. You now only collect the ones you can see.

>Seals now give less meat, and more fat.

>Should now auto-drink properly when digging clay in the shallows.
>Quality fields of stones dug in the overworld should now be differentiated by stone type.
>Buffed Porcelain doll.
>Reduced the ranges of boar spear and B12 axe a bit.
>Waterstriders are now bait, talked about here.
>Strawberry Cake now satiates berries, rather than fruit.
>Yarrow now heals Antcid burns over a short duration, rather than instantly.
>Added an explanatory tooltip to the Push! action.
>You can now make coins from Rose Gold. Reported here.

You won't get enough metal from that single stockpile, but it'll get you started:
Anvil+Smithy's Hammer are base requirements for almost everything.
Alternatively, a Meatgrinder is 3 Iron and doesn't require an Anvil to make, unlocking a huge core of food options for battle characters: Running Rabbit Sausage (Rabbit+Fox, AGI), Boar Baloney (Boar, STR), Deer Dog (Deer, AGI+2), Bear Burger (Bear, STR+2).
IMO, most useful first thing to make after Anvil is Spectacles, can be made from Copper and the ore I brought should be ~+8PER. Rest of the nuggets go into Symbel.
Pick Axe is the obvious goal, it's about 400% mining action speed increase, extremely strong. Metal Axe is useful for chopping trees faster, but currently Stone Axe is still your better q Stick producer. Metal Saw is only useful for more boards per log, as your Bonesaw will more easily be higher q.
Good luck on the smelts. Don't expect anything from that stockpile, I mostly brought it because I'm waiting another 3 days for coal anyway.

Thanks again. Is the perception boost that useful right now? I have about 2500 forage or so.
My main goal is quality, and in fact the q28 ore can make me a way better stone axe. How does recycling work? I need a pair of the same gear and it has a 50:50 chance of either adding a socket or removing them? Trying to get some +11 UC combat gear on each slot
c82831 No.16146678
>>16146627
Foraging helps all the way up to 50,000 PER*EXP. 2,500 means you're not even seeing every Starfish, Bay Bolete, Kvann, Glimmermoss, etc and you aren't even seeing the bare minimum for Cave Clay. It might not help immediately, but it's an easy big boost to PER with practically no commitment once you have your Anvil/Hammer setup.
Making a Stone Axe with it isn't a bad idea, but the best stone I've found was regular stone anyway.
Recycling requires the same gear with the same gilding, and it's probably a lot less than 50% (I've had decent luck but my friend has failed many recyclings). It also averages their quality so over time you'll probably lower the bonuses because getting +4 Taproot Lacing every time is kind of difficult.

When Amber says I get say, 2,300 LP/h, is that real time? That is, I'd get about 1k LP/h, or 24k per ingame day, which is enough to sustain a village authority?
c82831 No.16147291
>>16147281
When I calculated it a while ago I'm pretty sure it's practically nothing to sustain a village but I haven't looked in a while honestly. Yes, you should easily sustain a village authority with even basic curios.
3fd869 No.16147490
Alright, almost have the shit I need to found a village. I assume I have to defend the claim from shitters for a day? Should I build a wall and call it that?
3fd869 No.16147540
For curiosity's sake (no pun intended), I made a list of what I think are the "best" curiosities for me to study, how many I need per day to have constant studying, etc. For some things like the cone cows, it's completely unsustainable, and others depend on forages. If you have Q18 for everything, and got it all going, you'd get nearly 99,600 LP/day, which seems massive for me right now (just about 40 stats)
But still, it's not a huge priority for me at the moment. For example, I'd probably get better gains by focusing on raising better chickens, rabbits, and straw crops, as well as trees. Speaking of trees, I assume it's better to grow a variety instead of several instances of one kind. Trees that look good to me are:
>King's Oak (wood), Spruce (crafts/boughs), Birch (curios, sap), Mulberry (silk)
c82831 No.16147576
>>16147540
Few recommendations to add:
Cattail Heads suck. At least for me, working a full time job, it's too much micromanagement to maintain them along with other things.
Gooseneck Barnacles (found on Skargard, along Ocean) are great for little investment.
As great as Ants are, that's a lot of time wasted on raiding ants that could be spent on better things.
Prisms are mediocre LP/hr but an extremely easy upkeep.
(New) Jellyfish are decent LP/hr but hurt you.
Starfish are good LP/hr and decently common, can probably upkeep much easier than 40 Ant Soldiers a day.

Well, I only got 3 copper and 3 iron from that load of ore you brought me. Still, that at least unlocked a shitton of things for me to craft. I do have a vein of Chalcopyrite near my base so I can continue to mine that. I think I'll go for pickaxe+anvil first, and go from there.
5c1a74 No.16150277
>>16150243
With three Iron you could also make that Meatgrinder to jumpstart into good STR+AGI gains. From your stats you posted earlier, even in Famished you should get a stat-up from Running Rabbit Sausage + Frog Legs + Chives, which will almost certainly be AGI and gives around 1000% Energy back. I'm not vouching for this option specifically, as a Pick Axe is really huge, but you need I think 9 Iron to get that Pick Axe (4 for Anvil, 3 for Hammer, 2 for Pick Axe?)
3fd869 No.16150287
>>16150277
Is there an advantage to better fighting skills? Like, I can take boars with minor cheese, does killing a bear unlock anything, or is it just higher quality? I have a comfortable source of decent hides for now; otherwise, getting the pickaxe sooner means faster ore, which helps with all future mining, otherwise I'm stuck acquiring it slowly for a fighting benefit that isn't strictly needed yet
5c1a74 No.16150317
>>16150287
Red Deer and Bears both unlock the most practical combat foods for basically the rest of the time you'll be playing - AGI+2 and STR+2 respectively. STR will always be relevant for any hermit as it affects Smithing and Jewelcutting, and AGI will mostly be relevant so long as STR is also relevant, as the faster and more easily you kill Bears, the more you can focus on better activities (plus, more AGI negates the penalties of metal armour, for whatever that's worth later on).
Aside from that, there are also the dungeons - Bat Dungeon will make it so that normal bats permanently stop attacking you, plus Large Bats have decent curios. Ant Dungeon gives you faster Anthill raiding speed as well as decent loot. I don't even know how much combat ability you'll want for those but I can't imagine they're easy to fight.
Like I said I don't really vouch one way or the other. For us, with just one vein we've had to wait on Charcoal to be produced twice now, so metal is almost a non-concern. I don't know if my vein was inside the norm, though.

Well, I'm sure the developers mostly got into it for the same reason I did - a hobby and a fun way to learn Java. My client started as the result of a few day outage back in January of 18' where a weekly update broke Amber, and I didn't like relying on someone else to maintain the client. It just sorta snowballed from there, adding QOL items that people ask for. I'm pretty opposed to private clients, if you want to force developers to change shitty mechanics, make bots mainstream so they have a real reason to change it. That's how we ended up with default area select mining/farming.

70feda No.16155288

Basically anything you can think of except for a few things. The entire game is governed by widget messages and ui messages. Any normal in-game interaction from clicking on something to picking something up simply sends a message to the server with a pre-determined structure telling it what you did, once you learn the structure you can simply recreate those actions with code instead of actual game-play. Easiest way to learn is just to put debug prints in the gameui class which handles nearly every widget message and just review the calls whenever something happens.

Honestly I really love Haven. My friend described it as a grounded EVE Online, which I never played but for a small group it's quite a compelling sandbox MMO. We know we're not doing things efficiently, but the process of learning the game and iterating upon our processes has been a lot of fun. The primary delay in our farm has been just how improperly it was set up several times.
What I'm really hating is all the mechanics that kind of discourage me from playing. I want better stats to fight stronger animals. The efficient solution? …Stop playing the game??? As the character with high STR in my group, I want to mine, but mining sucks away my Energy which in turn hurts my Hunger. Eating more frequently for Energy means I'm eating on Satiations that take several hours to recover, and am not staying in Ravenous. I want to do something somewhat risky (or, in some cases, just something arbitrary that I had no intuitive way of knowing beforehand) and I get punished not just in wounds but also a strict restriction in where I can go (swamps are a no-fucking-go now, which is a shame because they have an important curio at all levels and easy spawning of a good Energy/AGI food) and in some cases crippling my character so much that I actually can't play the game until the wounds wear off.
Want a horse? Be prepared to be able to check back on the game regularly for a small window to attack the horse. Want trees? Well, don't go to sleep or they'll die, but you need to be around for several hours to babysit them! I get that there are a lot of hardcore aspects to this game and that's a huge part of its appeal, but there are a lot of things in the game that are just checking to see how little you can play but how frequently you can log-in (Satiations - ideally you just sit at a table, eat one food, then fuck off for two hours. Why???)
Once we get our fill of Haven we probably won't really come back. This game's not really designed well to be played, but to be managed through bots.

Where did you get the "need to be around for several hours to babysit them?"
Otherwise quite solid critique, devs have supposedly been aiming to reduce need for alts but many of these wounds and restrictions can be bypassed so easily by making alt for it, such as with dedicated character that goes to swamp to forage and catch dragonflies but does no activities that could cause wounds that infect.
Taming animals was relatively painless to my group, but we did capture dozens of them to have room for error.

This is kind of precisely where I feel like the game isn't respecting my time. While there are a couple of benefits in this design overall (it's nice having an MMO not tied down to some bullshit dailies system, and as a result of the large time-gates I don't feel like I'm falling significantly behind as a result of not playing enough vs. just not knowing what I'm doing) there are a few things that just aren't fun, and often times aren't getting changed fast enough.
Me and my two friends all work full-time jobs, with one of them also going to school. Our schedules don't line up frequently outside of days off where all of us are playing together for extended periods. In some cases, this means we can make a request towards another person's specialization and not actually see the result of it until a few days later (e.g., having our healthiest go to a swamp). When something comes up where we require something from a swamp, the general preferred solution is to either a) wait a few days, or b) make an alt to do it. None of us really like the idea of making alts, and all three of us think it was stupid enough that we had to make hard labour alts just to fix up our claimed land.
Look, I get that there are very clearly ways around Infected Wounds. You rarely actually need to go into a swamp for anything that can't just wait a few days. Worst case scenario, need a bunch of leeches, which is a non-issue once you have a cupboard full of them anyway. My complaint about this issue in particular is that it's a heavy earmark of the design philosophy in general where I'm not just getting punished for a lack of foreknowledge, but am actively being pushed out of the game for a temporary time. Another example of this is >>16160671 where I figured the design would be kind enough to not have immediately accessible cave walls not be cave-in tiles, and was quickly proven incorrect and had my play session before work cut short.
It's not about "getting good," in the intuitive sense of the phrase, but rather about "obtaining the prerequisite knowledge of how to navigate the arbitrary minefield of the game, knowledge of which is often unintuitive or in the worst case actively hidden from new players". The intuitive part here is key - I love the real risk of losing my character and weeks of work. I don't love that it could happen because of something I had no way of preparing for short of taking a veteran's brain and downloading all the knowledge they have accrued.
>You prepare one type of food
Actually, my favourite food combination currently is Boar Baloney + Frog Legs/Nutjerky + Chives/Mushrooms depending on if I want AGI or STR. These three are an FEP level up for me even if I'm in Hungry status, assuming I'm not Satiated. We also make use of Grub Pie, Pumpkin Pie, various fishes, etc.. and so far the only stat we haven't pinned down a good set of foods for is Psyche, in part because Cavebulbs are still pretty rare for us. On my lunch break, I ate a Boar Botillo (45% Sat at 20% chance) and hit the lottery, and five hours later I'm logging in to find that I'm still not unsatiated. Eat shit, this is an unfun sub-RNG statgain system with timegating.

That wasn't me responding. I'm not whinging because I'm not learning. I think my group is performing admirably largely thanks to what I've learned from you guys here, despite how shitty the wiki and game is. I'm whinging because of how horrendously unfun and unintuitive a lot of mechanics are. I get it, it's all to stop me from just doing one thing repetitively, but the extremely important issue I'm seeing is that it doesn't actually stop me from doing anything if I were willing to just make a bunch of alts.
Like, there was a change to Infected Wounds that is an improvement, but still I wonder what the actual fucking purpose of it is aside from just screwing over a character for some realtime hours (and, thus, making an even more compelling argument for alts). I wonder what the actual fucking purpose of satiations taking several realtime hours to recover when you're already punished in overeating by the hunger system, are already keeping your energy between 8000% and 10000% and having many ways to dump that energy, AND are REWARDED for eating more than one thing repeatedly thru variety. Satiations are just double-dipping on this and turning the RNG statgain system (FEPs themselves are already RNG, and many useful, easily obtained meats that don't require significant investment are weighted with shitty/unwanted stats for specialized characters) into an RNG "can I continue eating?" system on top of it.
Basically, I took the bait because that guy's an autistic faggot. I'm sorry that I'm a new player and don't know everything unintuitive about this game, and I'm sorry that apparently it upsets him that a new player points out how dumb some systems are. Dare I mention that the client/server is shit? It's certainly not any fun being only able to walk in one straight line through the endless sea of trees. Or maybe I'll be told that's a system that is meant to make me continue to stare at the game instead of alt-tabbing while engaging in extremely long travels xd

The Stone Axe you craft is (qStone+qStick)/2. Trees and boulders in the wild are hard capped at 10, so you won't make a higher Stone Axe from those.
There's two tricks here at play: First of all, Stone that you DIG up (i.e. from Mountain terrain ground) and Stone that you MINE out (from cave walls) instead have variable qualities hardcapped by Masonry, and in the case of Mining, SOFTcapped by your Tool. Second of all, when you take a Block of Wood and Split it, the resulting sticks is modified based on the quality of your Stone Axe.. So if you have a q30 Stone Axe, you will take q10 Blocks of Wood and make q17 Sticks.
So here's your play: Go around in the world and dig up Mountain tiles until you get higher q Stone. You'll need to raise your Masonry above 13 to really reap the benefits - at least 20, but I've found q43 Stone myself so the higher the better. You then make an Axe, Split a Block, make a new Axe, Split a Block, etc.. until the Sticks stop being higher quality.
By the way, when you try to Mine, not only is your tool Softcapping the quality of your ore and stone, it's also a multiplier on Str to even Mine in the first place. This is the real autism of Mining.

Basically, the number one thing I've learned about playing this game, that you have decent control over even as an uninformed player, is asking the question: "How can I use my resources to make something higher quality than it currently is?" In cases like mining, the difference between 2-3q is enormous in terms of energy drain. When you're smelting the ore you mined, how do you get the most out of it? Increase the quality of your smelter as much as possible, and then also the highest quality fuel you can manage, which means the highest quality tar kiln with the highest quality kiln fuel (which do you have control over q between blocks and boards?). Most of the time it's just trying to raise the softcap as much as possible, but when you're softcapping something, even a few extra points of quality makes a big difference - and with the sheer scope of the game, it's hard to really detail every tiny little bit without being overwhelming and mostly irrelevant to new players.
By the way, your Stone Axe also softcaps hides and meat when you start killing higher wildlife. It's very important to spiral it up, even after you get a Pick Axe.

I should be getting around +6 Masonry per Plumb-bob, and it's a rather cheap at 2 Nuggets each, making the bottleneck on 2 Gild Clothes actually finding the Nettle for it. Exploration Patch boosts my Exploration even further, plus giving me a sizeable boost - and being a Survival Gild base, I have a slightly improved chance at opening a 3rd Gild, where I can slam a Mole's Pawbone or a Taproot Lacing for the dream set that will last me one hell of a long time.

-South will contain one of the larger factions ("Hedgehugs"), who are building a massive community trade hub (which is a relatively peaceful and reliable way to take part in the game's economy)
-West also contains a large faction (AD), not really sure what they're up to besides the beginning of skirmishes with South and Middle
-not sure if/what faction settled the middle continent, seems like this is more of a free-for-all (ie dangerous) for the time being
-east continent seems to be less populous, or at least home to a less aggressive population. Might well be the safest spot for a hermit.
-The smaller islands in between continents are currently not very settled, although I'm sure even a smaller group could fully claim one as their own as you can't mine under oceans and knarr travel is irritating.
In general the most safety can be found near larger factions (the northern larpers specifically are well known to be noob-friendly) unless they're feeling bored. If you live near one, get to know them and build at least a mildly amicable relationship.
Middle continent will likely be the worst place to live especially as intercontinental travel becomes more common. I'd say settle the northeast or west continent if you want to stay safe, or the south/east if you want a more interesting experience w.r.t. large-scale interactions

> I have to compile it right, what's the least cancerous Java IDE?
You don't need an IDE to compile it, you just need a jdk. It looks like it's ant-based, so you can build it by setting up your jdk, making sure ant is installed (it comes with most jdk packages, but you might have to download it and install it), making sure your path and env variables are set up, and then just running `ant`.
If you can't do any of that on your own, you should probably just rely on somebody else to hook you up.
I don't know anything about Haven and Hearth, I'm just a professional programmer with Java experience. Looks like I can build the code here ( https://github.com/romovs/amber ) without any issue, and then launching the built hafen.jar runs fine.
Why do you want to build it, by the way? Are the releases in the release tab not good enough for you, or are you looking to do your own modifications?
Personally, I use Vim with YouCompleteMe, which uses headless Eclipse for completions and other IDE features. If you want a really good user-friendly IDE, I've heard damn good things about IntelliJ IDEA. The big 3 contenders tend to be IntelliJ IDEA, Eclipse, and NetBeans. Eclipse used to be king, but they've been lagging pretty hard, and I've always found it bloated and slow.
Feel free to ask if you need more help or details. Again, I don't know shit about H&H, but programming is my bread and butter. Java can be a bit of a pain to set up and figure out how to get running. If you don't have any command line experience, you might best actually just getting a good IDE and trying to import the project to build it, otherwise you'll have to resort to making sure you have a proper JDK and setting up your environment correctly, which can be daunting if you don't have any programming experience (or even if you do, but don't have Java experience).

I don't know how it works now tbh, I haven't played since 2013. All I know is that once curiosities came out it drastically changed how you play the game. Before, you just played the game and got LP from building things and harvesting crops and killing animals, you know, like every other game out there. After curiosities update, nothing gave LP except curiosities, so essentially everything you did outside of figuring out how to make new curiosities to give you more LP was basically a fucking waste of time. You did your daily make curiosities, put them in study, and log out until the study is complete because studying could be done offline and there was little point waiting for them to complete while online since most of the good curios took 4+ hours real life time to complete.
It was fucking boring and they did it to combat bots grinding on trees. Except it did nothing to combat bots and really only made it easier to make effortless alts. Just another example of retarded devs destroying their game.

You'll want to get exploration and perception up to find forageables. Survival affects the quality of those items. Try to only eat for FEP/stat gain, and not to restore energy/wounds. Combat isn't going to be a thing for you until you get at least 10-20 AGI/STR/unarmed

Not really, it's fairly easy to avoid cave ins at level one, it's like playing minesweeper, when you mine a tile and powder drops, that means one or more tiles around said mined tile is a cave in tile that will trigger a cave in. The amount of cave in tiles correlates to the amount of cave dust, for example 0.03 would mean there's three cave in tiles around that mined tile.

Is there a purpose to duplicates with the current system? As I understand, previously it was some sort of card system and it helped with the likelihood that moves would appear, but it appears to do nothing now.

Duplicates let you increase the level up to 5. That's what the + and - is for in the combat schools screen. Punch is ok but there are better combos. Haymaker is good for cheesing if you have an enemy that you can outrun or get stuck on the other side of a cliff. Left hook is good along with punch for building openings for uppercut.

Quarryman I hit nearly no bumps, only a few abandons for rocks I couldn't find and two Iron Ochre quests that I gave up on (and then immediately found Iron Ochre later…). I consider it karmic reimbursement for my attempts to do Fisherman first and immediately hitting a quest asking me to craft a lure, which meant I would have to harvest a plant fibre (instead of our crafter), make a cloth with it (instead of our crafter), then make a fishing rod with it (INSTEAD OF OUR CRAFTER) just to unlock the fucking knowledge of the fishing lure it wanted me to make. I sat on that quest for probably like two weeks because we kept having better uses for what little cloth we were producing at the time.
If it's of any condolence, there's no way I'm going to smoothly get through 30 quests of Gem Hunter. I just hope I get to the increased chance to mine gems out before it fucks me.
I also really hope there's a decent change to credos coming, because to get to Miner I'm going to go through several hundreds of these quests, with many of them being as fun as "log on, study something, log off for 18 hours".

200% EPH, 7 FPH. That on its own is insane.
Then you have the Satiations. 5% chance for only 20%? That's along the lines of just eating a Chive you pick up off the ground, except you get extremely efficient Energy and FEP for it. That's so low you can shovel them in your mouth and not even give a fuck.
By comparison, other sausages you're working with are worse FEP, 5-7% Hunger (usually around 100% EPH) and will have a 20% chance to satiate at 40%. Deer Dog is your first practical +2 AGI option, and it gets fucked by Game, Sausage, and Meat satiations, so you can not combine it with any other sausage or Meat Pie or you'll have to, as was eloquently put earlier in the thread when I dared criticize the awfulness of the Food system, fuck off to your autism corner.
Honestly, I don't even entirely care about the stats themselves - as the miner of my group, I struggle with balancing my Energy. I can nuke 5000% Energy in about 20 minutes, and eating one sausage can kill my ability to eat similarly relevant stat items for 10-12 hours. Of course it's RNG, too. As a side note, the Hunger cost on this means less questing to bring your hunger back to Ravenous, which means more time spent doing relevant activities like mining out a gemstone for your credo.

I was once naive and thought I was nearing the end of my chalcopyrite vein. I am now convinced I have an untapped source of infinite chalcopyrite, and must unironically make 50 Tar Kilns just to produce charcoal to keep up with this shit.
I also must get into wrought iron, two weeks ago.
98747c No.16211307
I did some math. I have 1,725 chalcopyrite mined out right this second. That's going be 69 rounds of smelting, with a grand cost of 828 charcoal. Using Boards on my Tar Kilns will require 14 rounds of tarring at a grand total of 1,166 tar kiln hours. This is just to smelt what I have mined out immediately, and is after we've already gone through 10+ stockpiles of chalcopyrite.
So here's my setup and my plan, if one of your jaded veterans wants to correct me on anything I'm missing here:
Always maximize Charcoal quality over quantity
q23.9 Anvil + Hammer
~q38 Finery Forges
Destroy my stockpile of iron until I've bloomed a few pieces of Wrought Iron up to q38, and then remake my Anvil and Hammer. Repeat the process until I feel like remaking my Finery Forges.
At some point in this process the Charcoal is going to be the primary softcap, and I'll probably end up waiting on our trees. At this point, I'll start remaking other important metal tools and accessories. Hopefully, I hit q50+ on my Wrought Iron, and once our trees catch up, I set aside 12 Wrought Iron to be made into Steel for the highest q B12 I can muster so that I can SLAY SOME FUCKING ANIMALS
Am I on the right track with this? Or should I take a different approach?

Ignore the tradeniggers, they're trying to stop you form learning the game for yourself. Upgrade your anvil and hammer at every 2-3 points of increased quality, since the quality of your hammer and anvil are included in the bloom calculation.
if you're a stingy coward, upgrade your hammer with all of your milestone wrought bars that have capped out in quality, since you get more quality calculation power per bar of iron in the hammer than from the anvil.
Also iteratively upgrade all of your tar kilns with the best stone and clay you can muster, it has a 1/4th weighting in the quality calculation for the coal AND speeds up the rate that it puts out coal. (reminder if your coal is better than your branches you can fire bricks made from better coal made from better tar kilns to make better smelters that make better baseline quality bars from your ores)
If you want to play miner and start spiraling your own metal, try it out and see how far you can get. Taking scraps from another faction means you waste the opportunity to learn how the agme systems work and how to plough through them faster and more efficiently the next time you pick the game up.

>Also iteratively upgrade all of your tar kilns with the best stone and clay you can muster…
Already started on that. I got a couple going using q50 Clay and q43 Stone. I don't expect to find better Clay until we can Bone Clay (and am occasionally making trips to stockpile more and more of it) and the only better Stone I've found was about 12 pieces from a few tiles in L1 that got used to spiral mine and another anon's Stone Axes.
I hadn't considered using coal for bricks, but right now most of my bricks have been made from q28 Sticks and our trees are only about to get better - I think the Stone Axe spiral is the number one thing I stayed on top of, to the point that it's actually almost better than my Pick Axe (q38.1 Stone Axe vs q19.9 Pick Axe). Because I have a q43 Stone node, I think my Axes and thus my Branches will stay ahead of my Coal for a while still.
Thanks for the advice. I generally had the right idea but I think I'm overestimating how much the bloom will increase the quality, to think I'd get nearly 15 points before upgrading my Anvil/Hammer. Now that I've nailed down a good diet for energy without murdering my stat potential, I feel pretty safe to mine out thousands of ore. It'll be another 10 hours before this next round of coal pops out, so I'll get some good experience on the matter in then.
f0ddf6 No.16212034
>>16211861
Good to hear you're already keeping up on the stone axes. Lumber industry is the biggest stopping block for metal production since you actually softcap down your metal if you put shit coal in a a finery forge the same quality as the cast iron.
Firing bricks from high quality board-coal is a possible crossover between tool progression systems if you get a very good bonesaw before you find high quality stone to upgrade your stone axes for better branches.
This makes wrought a retard's game where you destroy countless bars to try and get two +10% rolls to make a better hammer.
I think the understated aspect to metal spiraling that people explicitly try to avoid describing is that your 'failed' bloom rolls still dramatically increase the quality of your source metal if the anvil and hammer are high enough. Turning q10 ore to q20 bars and the q20 bars into q50 'shitty' wrought is still making huge advances quality from thin air. With a big enough stock of 'shitty' wrought, you can make cheap armor and other items that have sqrt(50/10)= ~2.2 the defensive power of the q10 bars they came from.
If wrought was only useful because your best ores could be made slightly better, it wouldn't be nearly as big of a deal.
96919d No.16212093
>>16212034
I understood the concept that you could effectively bring all iron up to the level of your hammer and anvil, but I haven't had significant differences in quality since my first vein I mined was ~28. I hurt its quality a bit from the smelter and coal, and can improve it, but the improvements aren't from wrought.
My expectation here is I have thousands of ore and can serve to trash it in the attempt to increase its q. The rest of my downtime is waiting on trees for better coal and wax for mineholes (though from what I've read, my STR level is going to be sorely lacking anyway so I shouldn't be in a huge rush. Maybe I can get a q40ish Pick Axe by the time I hit L3 and that'll work out)

I already started the wroughting process but honestly the big roadblock is coal. I've got six Tar Kilns and I'm pretty sure that's not going to be enough to handle the enormous fucking vein under my house. I'm honestly only killing the vein trying to get a Small Gemstone for my Credo, since I know amethyst was in there. Do you know how big gemstone veins tend to be? The thing I hate about this is the q50 clay node I found is from three vortices deep and I'm only getting to hit the outskirts of a big claim staked over it. It's a large enough node I get about three-four stockpiles but the travel is killing me.
How much better does it get with cave clay? I still don't see it but all the other forageable clay tends to not be impressive q.
Also I misunderstood the process a bit: I thought wrought iron went back into the finery forge, but I also thought wrought iron was the only bloom product that would get significant changes. Getting the huge q increases on cast iron makes it so much more reasonable to spiral this metal - another round with a 38.8 bar is a q4.5 increase on my hammer, which is like an average increase of ~1q on all bloom products? Pretty nice.

You get cave clay ~ 1 unit at a time rarely. I don't think it's even guaranteed to be better than the world clay you have around you - have fun. I never got my per*xp high enough on my miner to ever see any.
By the way, the quality increase (from the anvil) applying to cast iron bars is the secret to spiralling. The more times the cast iron bar 'fails' and returns to cast iron, the more you converge on the metal quality of your best bar.

This doesn't really have anything to do with the combat system. The taming system is something completely different, and shockingly new players can't somehow just immediately figure every inane detail of each tiny little mechanic.
I've never had Sideswipe finish the taming session, and read a singular post on the official forums that you have to use unarmed combat, and unfortunately with such a truly comprehensive Wiki I have to take it as gospel. Perhaps you could contribute to stop misinformation instead of jerking off about your autism.
