Activision Blizzard lays off nearly 800 employees after 'record' 2018
http://archive.fo/wTnOx
>Activision Blizzard has begun laying off some of its 9,600 employees, mostly in non-development sectors, even as it reported a record net revenue of $7.50 billion in 2018, up from $7.02 billion in 2017. Activision expects to lose 8 percent of its staff, or nearly 800 employees. The company plans to restructure its efforts and focus on core franchises such as Overwatch, Diablo, Call of Duty, Candy Crush, Warcraft and Hearthstone.
>Kotick said on the investor call that Activision needs to streamline in order to react quickly to changing market conditions and fresh business models. He was responding to a question about how the industry-shaking success of Fortnite – a free, microtransaction-based battle royale title from Epic Games – has changed its approach to games like Overwatch. Kotick said he sees more space in mobile markets for free-to-play models to take off for Activision and Blizzard franchises.

Pretty much my interpretation. Why would they not do this. Their like valve or epic they found there way to make massive revenue streams why keep on this extra staff they dont need anymore.

The major problem with Blizzard is that after WoW, their entire fucking identity became Warcraft, which itself is just a shitty ripoff of Warhammer. Blizzard North meanwhile was making somewhat actually inspired games like The Lost Vikings, Blackthorne and Diablo. Despite D2's (continuing – seriously I think only their recent BNET client rerelease stopped the D2 "war chest" from being sold at retail stores) success, Blizz North was enveloped into the main studio and all the devs who didn't want their lives to revolve around a kid-friendly version of a tabletop IP left. From that point on Blizzard was like the obnoxious fucking dad who has to show everyone his baby photos, blissfully unaware that everyone else was in fact a baby at some point and most people even have other babies too, except their baby was Warcraft and instead of showing photos they had to shove it in every single IP they had. Even if it wasn't directly referenced they copied game design ideas and put "subtle" references for their Warcraft fans to find, as if Warcraft were an obscure IP from their early days and not, you know, the IP behind the most popular MMO to ever fucking exist.
3c8773 No.16116513
>>16116500
Even if you didn't like D2, it's pretty obvious that Blizz North had a much more interesting repertoire of games compared to two different-but-similar RTS franchises, both ripped off from two different-but-similar tabletop IPs.

More than likely they trimmed the fat by letting go of women. Why should I care about the fate of some blue-haired roasties that only got the job in the first place due to quotas? Hell, most white women wouldn't even be able to get into a university without a spot for roast-beef owners just like them. And when they were working there, they made everything worse, especially for guys that used to like Blizzard's games. This is actually a good thing.

because blizzard are hacks, have been for years. it wasn't so much warcraft as them not having to copy anything to sell as a polished turd. sure, shit still sold on brand name and marketing (tf2 with waifus!), but not because their own games were any good.
add to that they after their initial success they were high on their own farts ignoring completely what people wanted and even outright shat on them (remember when people asked for a grittier d3 to be more in line with 1/2 and got a mlp mockup in return?) while having none of the talent that made them great in the first place.

They were able to design games competently up through Warcraft 3. Sure the games had a pretty lame/uninspired aesthetic and writing, but Starcraft's art design was passable and both franchises had good soundtracks. Even if you didn't like the vanilla game, it was worth it for the custom games community. The competency very quickly went away after WoW came out.

Most people don't understand how internships are supposed to work, especially the interns. It effectively becomes free labor and sending people off to get coffee/lunch for the rest of the office. All it really takes for that gravy train to end is one competent intern with principles and a preexisting cash flow to sue and follow through.
You can imagine how many times this doesn't happen, especially in California.

No, just the California media sector. The women in coding that keep their jobs tend to stay away from hair dye because they have the mindset to learn it, which requires a smaller ego and a willingness to learn. The self-professed "coders" who look like that only really have games to their name that they made with an outside program.
The ones that actually work in the industry aren't seen because they focus on their work instead of social media.
You will always see the most ugly on social media, no matter what plastic surgery they had they can't hide their disgusting attitude from others.
