Templars are the generic evil bad guys. Assassins are the young, hip, counter culture, who wear stickers on their backpacks and spray paint public property with their rad and hip and with it slogans and emblems.

That's laughable, man. The story basically goes like this:
>long ass time ago
>advanced race of aliens creates humans
>aliens control them like cattle with special mind control devices
>???
>some of the humans escaped, managed to set their brothers free!!11!1!11
>meme war commences, humans revolt against their creators and chimp the fuck out
>???
>then, in the present
>some human figured out that these special tools, called the Artifacts of Eden, can be used to control people like cattle
>Assassins want to get all the tools and keep them out of the hands of any would-be authoritarians
>Templars want to get all the tools and use their power to devise a utopian society on earth, devoid of war and strife and famine and all the other societal ills we face as a species
The whole "ideological conflict" between these two factions boils down to the simple fact that one faction says, "People ought to be able to make their own choices, even if that means the world is a chaotic shithole as a result" and the other says in return, "Nuh uh! The world would be an overall better place if humanity was kept in check by an overseer of justice and peace. We believe we're good enough for the job".
What they fail to realize is that they're both retarded, and neither philosophy is going to render impotent the problems that humanity faces.
>are there any newer games worth it
No.
