>psn user xStinkyButt69x sends his support!
First Nier Automata and now Kingdom Hearts 3, there's this new gameplay gimmick on the block. A moment in singleplayer games where you're facing a perilous situation, but then the game connects online and other online players send you their support. Making the situation easier to beat.
I don't like it. Not 1 bit. The PS3's psn support didn't last more than 13 years. When Sony cuts the support for PS4 games in 2025, the PS4 won't be able to connect online for these spirit bomb moments to work anymore. Rendering them obsolete in future playthroughs.
I hope this gimmick doesn't catch on.

Why call them spirit bomb moments, the comparison doesn't even fit. Give it to Automata or Yoko Taro, since it was the first.

"The community lends its weight to a single player's experience" as a trope. Neir Automata did it right because of the reveal that each of those helpers sacrificed their save. KH3's is kinda meh because it;s literally a callback to an old… mobile game, I think? It makes a little sense lore-wise but otherwise doesn't have any punch, because it's literally a userlist.
For moments like this to have punch, I feel that the contributors need to lose something.

I don't know or care about Kingdom Hearts, but Nier Automata did it flawlessly. The gameplay, music, and story for that segment all perfectly feed into the same theme. Exactly what that theme is is less important than how it was executed in my opinion.

Being totally honest?
It's fucking hilarious seeing Disney villains interacting with Final Fantasy / Nomura villains and characters. The plot is wild, but it's only so sprawling because it has so many games and the fan summaries don't know what's important ( 90% of Birth By Sleep) and what's essentially filler (Most of Days and all of Union with the exception of TWO CUTSCENES and some fucking names.)
The end result of this is youtube filled with 3 hour summaries of a plot that has been assembled over the course of THIRTEEN FUCKING YEARS. It's what happens when your central premise is "Friendship is literally power" and everything spirals off of that.

You're not supposed to play these story-heavy games 13 years after the fucking launch. It's like some faggot would try to play metal gear solid games and expect not to have them spoiled after 7+ years on chans. That's simply not how shit works

Are you the type to get utterly butt-blasted about stupid shit like Snape Killing Dumbledore? That just means the story was shit in the first place. Everyone and their mother knows that Darth Vader is Luke's father but that doesn't stop the original trilogy from being enjoyable to this day. J.R.R. Tolkien's world still captivates hearts even if, surprise, the good guys win in the end.

Knowing the details of a story in advance can kill any sense of mystery that the story could otherwise have going for it.
For example, Persona 5 uses a format not unlike an epic poem, where it begins in medias res at Jokers low point and tells much of the backstory as flashbacks, which shouldn't necessarily be a problem, however, the main menu of the game has the silhouettes of the entire cast, and despite the masks, its pretty easy to figure out who these characters are when you meet them in game. This deflates almost any tension that the game would otherwise have.
It becomes a waiting game of, when does this character join us, rather then, for example, when makoto is investigating the phantom thieves, there isn't any question of, is she a friend or a foe, does she remain in the dark despite her best attempts, or any other questions. It turns into a waiting game of when does she join.

This should actually be no problem to fix in a patch while the network shutdown is impending, but I'm pretty sure Sony or Microsoft still charge for those. If they're smart developers will have a short database of sample users in the release or the day one patch to default to if the connection fails. If you've just had this feature in a game you could go back and replay the part with your Internet connection shut off. It's gotta do something if the database is unavailable. Of course, this assumes the developers are competent and forward-thinking about edge cases, which they probably aren't.
>>16126455
Persona 5 did have the advantage of telling you from the beginning that someone will betray you. Every character you add to the team is a potential traitor, recovering that sense of mystery lost from knowing who's going to be a protagonist. Wish they didn't fuck that up for anyone paying attention, though.

Except for that they patched it in the most recent version so that it's now practically impossible offline and takes 40+ minutes of sitting in a corner grazing bullets with barely even more than a pixel of room for error because deunvo means if you're offline you're a pirate :^)
The best part is that the patch was also indiscriminately applied to the ps4 version too apparently.

To put this into a slightly different direction - are there any good singleplayer games with moments like this? Especially when you don't expect the help from unlikely allies or it's at least spectacular in nature?
For instance, watching the restored plane of the Boomer in Fallout:NV doing a bombing run on the Hoover Dam. Or generally, you finding yourself on the brink on defeat until "reinforcements have arrived" messages fill your screen.
