No, this wouldn't work without specifically adapting the previous styles to work with such a shading model, in which case you're not working in "pixel art", "low poly" or "voxels", you're working with view-oriented planes, simple meshes and large arrays of cubes that have the same material texture channels and get shaded the same as every other 3D mesh. And if you want the pixel art to be shaded along with the surrounding environment, the process of drawing bump and height maps for each sprite is essentially just a convoluted way of representing a 3D surface anyway so you might as well just make an animated 3D mesh and then render it onto a flat plane.

I was thinking 2D platformer in a 3D space. AAA for the background, voxels for the foreground objects, lowpoly and claymation for enemies, sprites for the pc, allies, and items.

I could see a game doing the common cartoon cliche where they parody popular stuff in different art styles. Every level is a different level of technology and art style, and possibly different gameplay.

"Pixel art" itself is a term created after the fact, like you're saying, back in the day that was just the best available for the devs. They had to be creative with those limitations to look good, we don't have that anymore so we get pixelshit.

That's why they were usually used for things like terrain. People think voxels have to instantly mean cubes but it can be more subtle than that.

I'm not worried about it that much because 6th gen was the first time 3D graphics were advanced enough to actually clearly represent what they needed to, even if they were much more limited than what we have now. And people have terrible memories and think the graphics of old actually looked better than they did - I show people actual footage of N64 or PS1 games they haven't played in years and they're in disbelief that it actually looked like this. Hell people are like this even here, I remember seeing a Morrowind thread where people legit thought it's a 90s game because graphics couldn't be that bad in 2002.
