XIV's housing is pretty great even if it's a pain in the dick to actually get one. Sadly you have to learn a bunch of glitches to actually design your house well so you can put stuff on stuff it was never meant to be.

I love having a 'home base' in video games. But I think I like it best when I can make my own base to chill out in. Here's my primary base in Subnautica. It's kind of in a poor position in Safe Shallows, right next to my lifepod, but I've been adding to it incrementally. I've been adding more storage space, indoor growbeds, alien containment units, etc. I also have outdoor growbeds that are growing those acid mushrooms to power my bioreactor and gelsacks to make aerogel.
I've got more than 24 hours on my savefile and really all I'm doing is laying down scanner room bases throughout the game.

It's not a case of Juste just grabbing a dining chair from a legitimate dining room to take back to his empty room, he just discovers furniture strewn about and is autistically compelled to bring it with him back to the room he found, like a some sort of packrat. In XIV, you get trophies of Extreme bosses, the boss can drop a material that can be crafted into a furnishing. They're usually a trophy in function rather than appearance. Garuda has a couch, Titan has a lamp, Leviathan has a fountain, Shiva has a chandelier and so on. Ifrit, though, does have a wall mounted blazing head that resembles Ifrit (Not literally Ifrit's head on a plaque though)

I like making housing in games that either don't support it or never intend for the player to have a personal lodging.
As an example, Divinity Original Sin 2. Sure you get a ship as transport between acts, but I tediously stacked crates and paintings to give it walls and carefully placed decorations. I hoarded specific items and sorted them by size in a gallery of sorts.
The game fucked me over in the last act by making everything super hard to see, so I just started playing my older save to continue designing.
In the first Original Sin I took over a house in Cyseal and lined the walls with stolen valuables and chests, but the buggy nature of what items were "owned" or not led me to have many unavoidable battles when adjusting their position.

Morrowind with the Real Furniture mod. In-game placable variants of vanilla furniture sold by vendors in unlimited quantity. Works via scripting so also OpenMW compatible. I find it extremely comfy and immersive because unlike a static housing mod you just get pieces to customize any interior/exterior and make it suit your purposes/character. Oblivion has just 4 perks per skill and most of them lackluster and boring. Skyrim has perk trees that can add a lot to a skill with the right mod. Skyrim combat looks better too with limb dismemberment and sneak kill finishers. Skyrim did improve some things substantially mostly bethesda basically nicked the best mods from Oblivion. Sadly it also cut out a lot of things and there's no chance of it coming back. The next TES game will probably cut even more to appeal to casuals and be the worst game in the series by far. Might even kill bethesda.

The best game that center around housing, is The Sims. That entire game is housing: the game. Animal Crossing, Stardew Valley and Portia also come in a close second, since those games also anchor housing as the central focal point. (Portia is a grindfest though, but much comfier if you just cheat.)
The best MMO that has housing, is FFXIV. The game is lively, active, and decorating apartments is nice.

The MMO that has the best housing, however, is Everquest 2. You're given a home right off, all of the homes are instanced so that there is no shortage of homes, you can own several homes at once, and the kinds of homes you can have vary massively. Including a fucking ship.

If Wildstar and City of Heroes were still alive, I'd also mention them as being worthwhile contenders for home building. Oblivion's NPC behavior, as janky as it could be, was much much more robust than Skyrim's. NPCs would travel, take off armor to sleep, and even steal from each other (though that broke shit because Bethesda didn't provide a way for them to go to jail and they usually didn't have the gold to pay a fine, so they usually died if they got caught). In Skyrim, traveling NPCs are simulated by a random encounter system, which often results in them traveling in the opposite direction that they say they are and other similar stupidity.
Skyrim also fucked over magic hard. Oblivion unfortunately cut a lot of effects from Morrowind, but you could still do a lot with magic, you could still make your own spells, and spells didn't take up a hand so you could actually play hybrid characters.

The problem with Skyrim's perk trees is that they're full of things that shouldn't be perks, because all they do is increase numbers. It's not any easier to add the ability to do something actually interesting just because the game has a perk system already.

I enjoy the building in conan exiles.
The official servers suck, pvp is pretty broken and many features are still missing, but it's fun as hell to build shit.
Feels cozy making a massive castle and then decorating it and stocking it with slaves and animal pets.

Aw yeah, I remember a cute Argonian in Chorrol (maybe? the one with a sort of canal section) who I quite liked and then one day watched her get murdered by a guard for seemingly no reason. Kinda scarred me. But the guard was mysteriously found dead a few minutes later too.
