I'll give any free to play game a try, but goddamn. Sure, no Titans in a BR makes a little sense, but reducing the pilots down to "hero" archetypes and no wall running is harsh, especially when a BR of Titanfall's pilots would've added some verticality to the staggeringly flat maps of battle royale. At best, this sounds like a free version of Black Ops BR but made by Respawn, which are pretty major improvements, but I feel like Respawn and Titanfall ought have higher standards. I can be content with it being a spin-off and not strictly Titanfall, but I worry it will influence the series.

Fuck off, Titanfall 2 was a legitimate fresh of breath air when it came to its mechanics. Every game nowadays is either Nu-DOOM, Serious Sam or Call of Duty. No other FPS has the balls to stand out. It's all the same shit with a new gimmick to avoid copyright lawsuits. Good examples of this are Cyberpunk 2077 and RAGE 2 which basically look identical, with Cyberpunk being more of an RPG and RAGE 2 being more of an action game. Either way no FPS game has truly messed with its mechanics to make something new like DOOM and Quake did back in the day. Hell even Halo which was babby's first FPS used the PSX Aliens control scheme combined with a highly addictive popcorn multiplayer experience to market its gameplay, on which it focuses more on quick and casual fun rather than a strategic team based game.
This shit is just everything wrong with the video games industry. free to play, BR meme, leeching off an existing franchise, focusing on esports rather than fun gameplay, characters that only exist as a specific loadout. Hell even Overwatch is less of a rip off than this shit is, and Overwatch was basically a Team Fortress sequel done by Blizzard because Valve doesn't know what the fuck its doing anymore. Battle Royale is like a super extended deathmatch with one life and awful level design. The Xo-16 was a shittier version of the 40 mil, and nobody liked using it because you spent more time reloading than actually firing. If any titan primary was overused cancer, it was the Arc cannon. For the kits, everyone who knew what the fuck they were doing ran dash supercharger with big punch on Strider classes, or ran the one that gave you core faster on Atlas titans. Nuke and auto eject were used exclusively by faggots who didn't have better or the type of subhuman bugman that'd run martyrdom in cod4. There were way more vortex shields than smoke was ever used, since catching even a single bullet would make your vortex shield into an instakill shotgun against pilots, and because you could use the cluster missile to scratch your back, even then, there was an even split between the cluster and the unguided salvo. Towards the end of the game's lifecycle even the slaved warheads saw a shitload of use because people discovered you could fire all of them off at a single target by mashing the fire button.

Exactly what I was thinking, I even used the slaved warheads because you could spam 1 of them pretty much all the time and keep the shields from recharging.
From my experience the smoke was pretty much tied with vortex and the shield coming in third since you could also use that to block any pilot riding you from damaging the Titan and exit.
So I really don't get how he got to that view that the game didn't evolve, I for example distinctly remember nuke eject becoming a thing on CTF for a while until people just started to plug them out of the sky with the arc or nades and then people just trying to surf damage or hop on and off the zip lines to get around.

The sad thing is that despite it being literally just a dumbed-down Titanfall 2 with no movement options other than a grappling hook you can use once every 30 seconds, it's still by far the best game I've played in this shitass meme of a genre.
How fun it would've been to actually have the movement options to make the worst part of these games, map traversal, far quicker though. The reason this lazily put together cashgrab doesn't even have vehicles to begin with despite the relatively large map size is probably because they DID have the movement options early in development, but took them away after playtesting and EA's upper management telling the development team to make it more accessible to the general public.
My only hope is that it fucking bombs so hard they find themselves in a TF2 beta situation, and eventually give in to pressure of their core fanbase into putting back the usual movement options. At least, as it stands, you can still pull some relatively sick vertical movement and gain a crazy amount of momentum with the grappling hook, the issue is that your speed just dies entirely as soon as you hit the ground.

The latest version of Border Break can be played on PS4 if you get a JP PSN account. I ended up playing for a couple of hours because my friend is a sucker for whatever is big at the time, and it's fucking miserable. The guns feel atrocious. The TTK is garbage, the R101 carbine does ten damage per shot or some shit at range, and people usually have 200 HP, plus some of them have defensive shield abilities and such bullshit. The Alternator and Flatline have vertical recoil for some fucking reason and also do piddly damage, most of the automatics have 18 round magazines to incentivize you to find extended mag attachments, the EVA autoshotty takes three direct hits at point blank to kill someone, and the R-97 probably takes an entire mag or more. They also nerfed the hipfire into the ground. There's no EPG, there's no Saltball, there's no SMR either. The Mastiff is apparently an "epic" weapon that only comes from supply drops. THE FUCKING MASTIFF, OF ALL FUCKING THINGS. THE GUN THAT WAS SO SHIT IT BECAME A FUCKING MEME IS THE OP GODGUN TO FIND.
Yes, all of the weapons use the same models and audio from Titanfall 2. But it's like someone threw out everything that made them unique and just turned them into the same gun with slightly different numbers. The carbines and the CAR were the weapons that were easy to use, but had less raw killing power. The carbines had better range at the tradeoff of worse hipfire, and the CAR had bad range but great hipfire The Alternator and Flatline had great damage, but had purely horizontal recoil which could be bypassed on the Alternator if you knew how to tapfire it. They rewarded good aim and game knowledge with a faster TTK. The Volt had a miserable TTK, but had a pinpoint accurate hipfire, no recoil and great range. The G2 rifle was pinpoint accurate, killed in 3 hits and shot as fast as you could click and had amazing range, but awful hipfire. It rewarded good aim and positioning by being a bootleg sniper rifle with a low zoom scope. The spitfire was a generic LMG that had big recoil and big damage. The Devotion shot faster the longer you held the trigger down, and that worked fine in TF2 because it had a large mag and you had infinite ammo to reload from. The Longbow was a hitscan DMR that killed in two body shots or one headshot with a good ROF, and you were locked into a high zoom scope making it somewhat difficult to use on people moving at 60 km/h through the air and bouncing off walls. The Double Take was a projectile sniper rifle that killed in two full hits or one full headshot, but had a low zoom scope. The Kraber had the bullet velocity of a speeding tortoise, but killed any man sized target in one shot, and existed purely to style on people. And so did all of the grenadier weapons. A bunch of oddball projectile weapons that usually required great aim to get those orgasm inducing one shot kills. The shotguns had the EVA8, a super simple to use autoshotty that killed in one well aimed hit in melee range, and the Mastiff, a piece of shit so bad it became a meme, and also became a way to style on fags.

Compared to Apex Legends, where the CAR, Alternator, the Carbine, Flatline, and R-97 and the RE-45 autopistol are basically the same peashooter with varying degrees of recoil and a slight difference in ROF, and they all take in the ballpark of ten or more shots to down someone. The Alternator and Flatline lost their defining characteristics, and so became shitty, generic assault rifles. The Hemlok is a carbine clone locked into a burst fire mode, the Volt doesn't exist anymore, the G2 takes seven shots to kill or some shit now, so there's no point using it over an automatic, the shitfire is a generic LMG with high recoil and slightly more damage than the other autos. The devotion plain doesn't fucking work, it's a bullethose weapon that you have to hold the trigger down with to have fun, and they made it's ammo capacity a pathetic 50-ish, and made it fire the rarest type of amunition to find, so you'll never have enough for a couple of reloads. I haven't used the double take clone, but the DMR fires pathetically slowly and has a 4 shot magazine capacity now, it also takes four body shots to kill, I believe, and I've also never used the Kraber since it's a care pacakge only weapon, but I'll assume it drops people in one bodyshot, since anything else would be absolutely fucking SINFUL. The EVA, again takes 3 solid point blank hits to drop someone, and the new lever action shotgun needs two solid meatshots to kill, while being a projectile weapon with awful hit detection. The grenadier class doesn't exist at all, and all of the single fire pistols including the Wangman are a garbage fire.
And now, for the real kicker. The Mastiff, a golden, care package only weapon, one of the shittiest, most inconsistent weapons in Titanfall 2 or at least it used to be, feels the exact same as it did in TF2, before it was buffed. As in, it's an inconsistent piece of shit that'll sometimes oneshot within 15 meters, and sometimes it'll just tell you to go fuck yourself. The single best feeling weapon in this entire fucking garbagefire of a game is the version of the gun that used to be the most unsatisfying piece of garbage to use in TF2.

All damage is doubled upon headshots, tripled in some cases. The TTK is far closer to the TF1 one, with some balancing in place to never repeat the EVA meta in that game. Even while missing shots you can drop people in little more than a second if your aim is true, especially with the autos and their oppressive firerate. If you're taking more than a clip with a R-97, an Alternator or a Flatline, you're just trash at this.
As for the recoil: predictable recoil patterns are in the game for all guns, and it's far preferrable to the random horizontal recoil in TF2. That'd feel like shit in a game about middle-long range engagements where every gun, even the shotguns, is a potential skillcannon. There's no damage dropoff for range in ANY weapon.
The audio for all weapons was greatly improved, they actually feel punchy as fuck now thanks to it and the recoil, making them take more skill than a straight up hipfire laser like some of them were in the previous installment. The overall nerfs to hipfire nonetheless hurts somewhat, though, but it's still usable in certain guns (I hope the Wingman Elite makes it into the game eventually as a legendary variant), As for the legendary weapons, the fucking Mastiff can drop people with full legendary armor in a single headshot, true to its TF2 form. It wasn't even that much of a meme weapon, the only reason it was legitimately shit was because TF2 was dominated by cross-map hipfire thanks to the awfully low TTK and the ease of headshots.
Again, I'll just say this is a game heavily reliant on headshots, and good aim is rewarded properly (you can wreck an entire legendary shield with one Wingman headshot, and jesus fuck you can two-tap people with that thing at any range if you're good).
It's not Titanfall, but I'm still having a lot of fun with it. Also: the titan game in TF2 was fucking trash.

See, you say the TTK is more like TF1, but the R101C fired at 810 RPM and did 50 at close range, killing in only four body shots, or 5 at minimum damage, since pilots in TF1 also had 200 health. The R-97 fired at 1080 RPM and did 40 per bodyshot at close range, and 30 at minimum damage, again, killing in either five or seven shots at max range, again, not counting for headshots.

How is three bursts to the head with a Hemlock or three headshots with a Wingman "too spongy"? In comparison to other BRs that's still incredibly fast, keep in mind the firerate for those guns and all others in the game is low as hell. And keep in mind by nature of the game once you start seeing others with purple/yellow armor most likely you'll have fully upgraded weapons with extended mags/stabilizers/etc.
A game in this genre with a TTK lower than the one and a half seconds it takes to potentially kill someone with three wingman headshots would feel absurd, especially with the slower mobility in this game. You'd have no time to react at all to flanks and the meta would shift harder to long range peek contests than it is already, and that's boring as fuck.
Nonetheless, get good. Learn how to aim and fire your shots, once you get to near optimal TTK everything will feel far less spongy.
