Not sure if you guys saw this, but it seems like Microsoft is ditching the whole exclusivity thing in favor of putting their games on other hardware. Basically they're taking Xbox Live and putting it on PC, Mobile and Switch. It looks to me like they're trying to go back to PC Gaming as a main focus and will be phasing out console hardware.
What I'm worried about are the rumors of Google getting into the console market, and I can see them replacing the Xbox in the console market. That in itself is a scary thought, especially since Google is already fucking over the industry using Android as a roadblock for games like Postal.
In any case I'm kinda looking forward to seeing what comes of this. Especially if Microsoft will continue to fund games like Cuphead and Devil May Cry, although who the fuck knows what they're doing anymore. They're so fucking hard to read nowadays.

Untrue, they confirmed new hardware at E3, I expect them to release this and not do much with it honestly.
Maybe add cross platform to some other multiplats and not much more

I wonder why the Switch and not Ps4/Vita as well? Is it because Nintendo has been more or less passive against Microsoft, whereas Sony was their main rival? Finally I don't think consoles, in the traditional sense can still exist, I bet that the "next generation" of consoles, especially if Google comes in, will be some sort of always online cloud-powered OUYA console that you can take it with you wherever you want.

I don't think it's a rivalry thing as much as it is Sony being a bunch of cunts.

Yes, but that can be more of a niche product like the Surface Studio rather than a main product like the Surface Pro. My point is that they're phasing it out rather than getting rid of it completely.

Mid gen hardware upgrades were already fucking sickening with the DS, seeing them on home consoles makes me sick to my stomach.

Why wouldn't Sony want to boost their game catalog? I doubt they would have to pay all that much money for it, unless they have to hand over some secret APIs about their OS to M$, but I doubt the Sony OS is something so valuable, especially to M$.

3. Sony wants the very VERY tiny potential profit in trying to force people to buy their systems to get a small monetary boost from increased hardware and subsequent software sales

That was because Mircosoft didn't have their own gaming handheld on the market for those series so they used Nintendo (which also had a bigger audience). There even some obscure MS published monster truck racing game that came out on the GBA early years.

Some… what. They're trying to parlay their OS near-monopoly into Xbox sales by turning every Windows 10 PC into a potential Xbox. Eventually, I hear, they're going to try to bring native Xbox game playing to PC (both from disk as well as digital download), as well as bringing over the Xbox 360/Xbox Original backwards compatibility to PC as well. Microsoft knows they can't win against Steam and all the other launchers - so they're counting on merging the existing Xbox marketplace with the PC along with crossplay/crossbuy to capture the casuals on PC - as well as make PCs more relevant to console casuals to try to pry them away from cell phones as their primary generalized computing device.
It's just going to be a bunch of native support for pre-configured UWP virtual machines that run Xbox One/Xbox 2 applications (Xbox One is already just a locked down standard PC running Windows 10 - so you don't even need to emulate).

The 360 was a massive failure too thanks to the RROD fiasco. The only headway they made was in mindshare, and they completely pissed that away on the Xbone launch.
The only thing I'll really give them credit for this generation is in pushing for backwards compatibility - which should be standard for all platforms, and used to be common back when companies still felt they needed to compete. Not having it now that they're on X86 and can just write an emulator once and then keep porting the emulator in perpetuity to all future platforms. Even without a disk drive, there's nothing to stop them from both supporting digital backwards compatibility and disk-based BC via a USB 3.0 disk-drive addon if they want to keep the base hardware price down.
Of course, even that they couldn't do right without fucking up. Their emulator is on a per-game basis, rather than a generalized all-purpose emulator forcing game support to trickle in slowly. Surprised MS isn't charging for it, but I'd rather than just allow all games to play and throw up a default splash screen warning that the game hasn't been optimized to work correctly and may be buggy or crash prone. Once a game is fully supported, just flip off the flag and disable the warning.
The other way in which they're fucking up is by making the disk just an unlock for a digital copy - which opens up the possibility of all sorts of fuckery regarding future censorship or licensing patches to remove art/music/references. Not to mention it's a pain in the ass to download those titles every time unless you keep them installed. What I'd rather they have done is just allow the Xbone to just make the emulator wrapper it's own download and then rip the image directly off of the DVD. Keep updates separate, so you can disable them and play the game as it was on the disk if you want.
But even what we got is more than anybody else this gen, which isn't so much a testament to Microsoft's "consumer friendly" policies and more a testament to just how badly the Xbone fucked up that they have to sell their console on last gen's games.

Xbox hasn't really been relevant this gen, the Xbone has good exclusives and no notable online community. The console wars this gen have been between PS4 and the Switch, nobody cares about Xbox.

I am not exaggerating when I say that games could be literally hundreds of times more profitable. How many games have had a budget of $23m or something stupid like that? Marketing and licensing and nepotism eats the budget up.
Seriously, a competent games programmer is like $45k a year tops, like one that's passionate and not a pajeet, and you could staff 10-20 people for a year for $800k

Games are still significantly cheaper to make than films. The average film has a budget of hundreds of millions.
Marketing is costly, for real. It might only cost $5,000,000 to make a game but the marketing could be $20,000,000.

You are living in a total fucking fairy tale if you believe this and your horribly skewed vision of the job market is what causes talented people to either leave or avoid making games. My first job as a programmer out of college, with absolutely no professional experience, earned 10k more than that with full benefits to boot. If there was a reasonable tradeoff for the pay cut, I'd understand, but between the worse benefits, less accomodating environment, more workplace poz, longer hours, and less competent management, the game development industry is going to continue to look like a joke to anyone graduating with a 4 year STEM degree.

No, hence my saying it won't be long rather than saying it's already available, but the fact that 360 emulators went from "can't load a menu" to "rendering graphics and sound effects" in the course of a year is incredible progress. Emulation is in a golden age right now, it's just taken for granted.

Does it annoy anyone else when companies say they're making X that'll work with x, y, z, "and android"? I get that you want to market yourself as much as possible, but the only software that will be on platforms as different as xbone and android will be mobileshit games. You won't get halo 3 working on android because absolutely nothing that runs android has the horsepower. Maybe I'm just living under a rock, but can anybody point to a single example of this type of flexibility being useful, because I haven't seen one. I can understand ps4/xbone, because multiplats already exist, and in that way this announcement is "wow, it's fucking nothing"-tier but why include android?

This. Inflation is real. A competent programmer should be making minimum 80k these days, and you know what? A promising new hire should be making just as much as a non-senior as well - if they're legitimately applying themselves they will quickly become valuable, and if they aren't, then their pay shouldn't be cut, they should be fired. Trump said it best: it's not about hiring the right people, it's about firing the right people, because you never know how someone is going to work until they are actually on the floor.

Same thing for the ps4 too. You can't play from the disc on either systems.
>Of course, even that they couldn't do right without fucking up. Their emulator is on a per-game basis, rather than a generalized all-purpose emulator forcing game support to trickle in slowly.
My best guess is that's because of licensing. Maybe they might have to license the game for the xbox one before they can offically support it. But then again, sony was able to let people play ps1 games straight from the disc, so fuck knows

Either they
>release a successor to the xbone, and continue having an open devolpement ecosystem and cross play.
or
>after the xbone ran its course ms will just abandon the xbox line and focus on having their own storefront.
I mean they obviously see the writing on the wall and see the xbone line to be a total trainwreck. So I think this is just backup plan.
Now, the thing is though, the idea of ms ditching consoles is frighting.
Considering Nintendo isn't aiming for the same type of audience that MS and Sony target, if MS leaves the picture, there's literally nothing sony from pulling all sorts of jewish tricks.

>>after the xbone ran its course ms will just abandon the xbox line and focus on having their own storefront.
Not going to happen. All this is is just MS offering a SDK to put Xbox Live hooks into third party games for other platforms - which can either be shipped with Xbox Live functionality in place, or just the framework and then easily added later via patch. It'll work pretty much exactly how Minecraft on the Switch already works - but available for developers to use at their discretion.
I really doubt they're going to try to charge for Xbox Live on other platforms either, because there's nothing there worth paying for on iOS/Android - and I can't see Nintendo or Sony ever allowing MS to charge their customers. It'll end up being a situation where everybody gets to play with Xbox Live for free - except for Xbox customers. But even that, I doubt will last long. Now that everyone else is onboard with the payed multiplayer extortion scam - MS can drop the monthly fee for multiplayer and leverage that as a selling point, while bringing Xbox native multiplayer in-line with the other platforms. That doesn't mean they're going to stop charging for Xbox Live though. They'll find some other means of monetisation. Most likely they'll just raise the price of GamePass and push that hard - or maybe have a premium tier Xbox Live which still offers the monthly games as well as allows for profile customization similar to Steam, albeit streamlined to just unlocking customization options with the subscription along with a cash-shop. They also have their own game streaming service coming up, so that's another subscription they can inflate to make up the difference.
Essentially, they'll claim Xbox Live is now free for all - and they'll be correct in regards to multiplayer at least, but they're just taking the fee people would normally pay and distributing it to other services and counting on increased "engagement" and services decoupled from Xbox to bring in more customers who don't even own Xboxes.

Because of that fact that it downloads a separate Xbone version instead of just reading the straight 360 version it technically counts as a new release under copywrite law at least that's what I read on v
And limiting it to specific games makes sense. If you only allow games that work very well and have optimizations for it you're guaranteed that if a game works it will work. That's why the OG Xbox emulator on the 360 only allowed certain games, because it was shit and didn't work well on most games.
