GOD HAND, Ghost Trick, and Wonderful 101
I only played Ghost Trick once, it was in one sitting as I couldn't stop and had to see how it ended. Haven't played W101 since last year when my Wii U broke, hope they port it. Played GOD HAND a few months ago.
God Hand was a game that at a time where I had grown bored of games, due to them all being easy triple A snore fests, kicked my ass back awake. It's just so fun and satisfying to master and has a rocking OST and a weird amount of passion put into it despite being probably made on a shoestring budget.
Ghost Trick is the most solid and to the point story of any game I can think of. It's hilarious and intense and has unique gameplay you don't find anywhere else.
Wonderful 101 is in my eyes the peak video game. It gets so many little things right, is full to the brim with secrets, has two unlockable difficulties that have different groups of enemies, and probably the best story od any platinum game. The entire second half of the game in particular is just one crazy bossfight after another, culminating in the sickest ending for a game I've ever seen.
I recommend all 3 highly. Honourable mentions go to Kid Icarus Uprising, any of the trio of ace combats, and any good fighting game.
Best game I was recommended on here was when I asked what i should play with a flightstick and someone eventually said Star Wars Podracer with one hand while the other one faps.

It's literally the best game ever made. It's so fucking sad that even with the old graphics and terrible ai no other game has even come close to beating it.
I'll give Hitman and Max Payne honorable mentions and Half-Life (and Quake and Doom before it) were a good precursor to Deus Ex but gaming peaked in 2000

All the Dukes were good, Nukem 1 Episode 1 was the first game I ever played. But Deus Ex is miles better than Duke 3D. If you think adding RPG elements and a good story is going backwards then, I dunno man.

It's not the RPG elements or story, it's the direct interaction with the game. Controlling Duke, running around the map, and killing enemies is fun. That's the entire game. Everyone has dropped this fun in favor of watching the special story thing go boom. The games themselves wouldn't be fun without the story, and if you don't care about the story, then they aren't that fun and a step backwards.

Just played Brigandine the other day when I started a new self-imposed challenge run. FFT and BG2 have been a couple of years, but if I didn't have such a huge backlog I'd probably do another round with them too.

A fun little 3d platformer on the PS1. Genuinely some of the best visuals/aesthetic I've ever seen in a video game. The music fits the atmosphere very well and while it's not overtly difficult, it's still a fair challenge for all kinds of players. No part of the game feels like a slog or busywork, collecting gems and what not always felt pretty satisfying. Because of the game's appeal to people both in and outside the target audience, it's honestly pretty perfect and I'd recommend it to just about anybody.

I kind of wanted to give this spot to Doom just because it feels more fleshed-out and complete, but if I'm not taking into account user levels or mods then a lot of Doom's levels don't really compare to Quake's. And Doom 2 was just a mess. Either way, Quake is one of the first real 3D FPS games and it's definitely a timeless classic, both for single-player and multi-player. Should be required playing for anyone getting into vidya.

One of my favorite fighting games and one of the games that brought me to the genre. With the absurd bullshit most of the cast can pull off, amount of bad characters in the roster, and the parry system I can definitely see why people either hate it or love it. Wouldn't recommend it to everybody but it can be damn satisfying and has some great art.

Not to mention the visuals and music, as well as the quests and bosses. Super Metroid because of the movement system, the explorative world chock-full of powerups and the overall atmosphere of the game. Dark Souls for similar reasons to the first two. Build variety, atmosphere, large world to explore.
