I like the combat a lot, there's JUST enough depth that it isn't boring, but not too much where I have to give it 100% of my attention. It's really relaxing.
The story seems to be really polarizing, either you love it and you think it's a work of genius, or you hate it and think it's contrived. I really like the story within the context of it's own universe, but the people trying to get some deep message out of it are wasting their time.

I thought it was okay. Disconnect the fetish-bait from the game and it's a fun slasher game with some neat boss fights, but the story and the twist seemed like the kind of thing you'd see at the end of some generic indie platformer.

Automata's story is comparatively shit to his earlier games, and even then Yoko Taro is no master writer. Don't feel bad for feeling unengaged. A lot of the most interesting lore, like the stuff with the Legion, the rise of free will in the robots, and the precise circumstances of the apocalypse in Drakengard are all in short stories and other media outside of the games.
Even then, some of those things are trash. Case in point: the YoRHa stage play. Speaking as someone that autistically went through the entire timeline, read all the short stories, played all the games, and even read the magical girl prequel manga to Drakengard 3, the high points are pretty few and far between.

The game has some nice ideas in it, but the gameplay kills it.

I can see how that wouldn't be very satisfying to a lot of people, so fair enough if that's the case.
I still wish they had a bigger budget for the environments. The open world gets real old before the game ends.

Nier automata has fun and satisfying combat that constantly has you reassessing new threats and engaging them in a variety of ways, never just droning on with rhythmic inputs to see it end. It isn't a perfect combat system but doesn't need to be, it is satisfying and if this was the straw that broke the camel's back for platinum games being lackluster you haven't been paying attention since 2012. The story is rich in excellent story beats and ties itself together with tasteful references and themes that immediately disqualifies the descriptors meaningless and pseudo intellectual as only a learned player would be able to understand its intricacies, if you want a spoonfed story I'd highly recommend Deus Ex or Planescape Torment instead. It is still one of the best games of the generation and will go on to be celebrated and only held in even higher regard as time goes on. Especially on /v/. It is no surprise the genius of the game, its structure, design and writing falls deaf on the eyes & ears of a /lit/cel.

You're going to be disappointed, anon. Drakengard 3 and NieR aren't known for being mechanically fun. The appeal is the music, the lore, and (in NieR) the sidequests. Drakengard 3 is definitely worse as far as combat goes, but they're both clunky.
Drakengard 3 in particular has a hard entry barrier because the characters are fairly easy to hate. You have to get over the hump and keep going until they get more depth. The novellas and character DLCs help a lot in this department.
