So just a headset probably still wouldn't give people the push to adopt it anymore than in it's current state. Maybe VR's adoption needs to be limited to those who can afford it so the plebs are contained to their bing bing wahoos etc.

The biggest problem with VR for me is the lack of traditional games. There are a lot of fun short bursts and other games refit to VR, but not much in the way of normal games that use VR as a main component.

The more important consideration with this is that it would force a complete change of game design at the fundamental level. In basically any game, your character is running around constantly. Can you imagine your average person who plays games even being able to WALK nonstop for a few hours, much less RUN? Any open-world sandbox games would now be too exhausting to play for more than a half-hour at a time. And platformers would be even worse. Now you have to both run AND jump constantly. Fucking nobody would be able to get through a few levels without stopping to catch their breath.
The thing is, everyone is still trying to figure out how to make a game for VR. Adapting existing game design to it inevitably fails because all you're doing is adding a 360 view and dumbing down aiming because — surprise surprise — aiming down gun sights is a FUCK of a lot less accurate than moving a reticle with your mouse or a joystick. Most games made for VR are essentially on-rails shooters because walking out of the motion sensor's view is a real problem. The only thing it works well for is a setup where you're not moving as a human, but as a vehicle, because then you're confined to a chair in the first place. But immersive simulator cockpits already exist and can accomplish the same with a MUCH higher degree of realism because, gee, it's ACTUALLY REAL! What a concept.
Face facts: virtual reality right now is little more than taping the screen to your face and taping the mouse to your hand.

Depersonalization is basically the feeling that you are not real, that everything you do is just a virtual reality, a fake world. Everything is fake and you are not real, you completely desynchronize with reality and become a 3rd party observer to yourself.
At it's extreme you'll freak the fuck out and panic when performing similar actions in the real world that you do in VR, at it's mild form you'll just be spooked by feeling you don't have hands and yet you have hands.

This is why it's basically a mathematical guarantee that all of us (or just YOU, if you believe in solipsism) are already in an artificial reality, a la The Matrix.
Consider:
>It's statistical fact that for a given set of information, a random selection from it will be closer to the middle than either end by virtue of there being a lot more in the middle. For example, if you pick a James Bond movie at random (there are 24), it's very unlikely that you'll end up with one of the first couple.
>If humans don't extinct themselves, they'll continue to expand until they conquer the universe, therefore human civilization will last for trillions of years
>Combining the two above, it means that any randomly selected year is much more likely to be some time billions of years in the distant future than some time in the first 10,000 years of civilization
>We're very close, comparatively speaking, to a VR so complete that it's indistinguishable from reality; it's a century away at most, and it's pretty much a guarantee that it'll end up being made, and people will be plugged into them (possibly at birth and/or against their will)
>This means that the amount of time humans will NOT have indistinguishable VR will be 10,100 years or so, and the time they will have it will be countless billions of years
>Which means, statistically speaking, the chances that Current Year is a year in that first period rather than in the second is so mathematically remote as to be inconceivable. We should all be living in Star Trek right now
>Therefore, because Current Year appears to portray a world in that initial period (and that's so unlikely) it must instead be a false VR
But the thing is… the technology and powers that (presumably) have created this are so in scale larger than you are as to be literal Gods, that there is no hope for you to ever escape it. So knowing the fact that you're in The Matrix right now cannot actually affect how you live your life. Most likely dying here will mean you get disconnected and die in whatever state the real world is in; else why would you be in here in the first place? It's just something to keep you awake at night, staring at the ceiling in existential angst.
You're welcome!

Even assuming it's true, it means nothing at the moment, or for the foreseeable future. People want to use concepts like that to try to retrofit magical thinking onto modern concepts. Sure, if you want to believe in an afterlife - it makes a more believable argument that you're saved on some cosmic hard drive - or that you could time travel by hacking the Universe's memory and inserting your data into a previous saved state. But there's no evidence that, even if we were in a simulation, that any of that is actually happening under the hood. The simulation could just be running, and god forgot to hit F5 for the last several million years and a cosmic system crash could wipe out everything, with no guarantee of the simulation recreating everything on the second (or third, or fourth, or hundreth) itteration. And why would we be saved anyhow except as a byproduct? In a simulation of the universe, what makes us special enough to have a off-server digital heaven. Does every NPC you kill in a game get uploaded to the cloud and preserved for all eternity?

Nowhere did it say anything about a delusion of immortality. That's something you added yourself, based on some kind of strawman regarding (I assume) the Singularity — which really does resemble a sci-fi version of the biblical Judgement Day. They're different because one is a furitive hope and the other is a mathematical guarantee. Then again, there's a lot of things that you can get math to say about reality that defies logic in the first place. Part of this was to illustrate the flaws in assuming the Universe can be completely explained and understood through math in the first place.
>there's no evidence that, even if we were in a simulation, that any of that is actually happening under the hood
String theory implies that the universe we perceive isn't the way things actually ARE; it's just another layer of illusion like how our brains interpreting reality is, itself, an illusion. If everything were actually just a hologram it would make more sense than it not being one.
