No matter how much oil you rub on that armor, it's going to slowly be eaten away at and beaten up. Skeletons that supplement their resilience by wearing armor are top tier though.

I always thought being a race made of pure mana/magic would be cool, like an Archon or something. The way I'd spin it for a vidya would be combining the hp and mana bar into one. Theoretically an efficient self-healing or regeneration spell would give you infinite mana but you could also kill yourself by casting spells and anything that deals damage to both health and mana would just deal double damage to you, since it is all one bar. The reason most human races in fantasy are shit though is because they seem to have no merits to being equally as good as the other races than "they are civilized and superior and determined and gods chosen people amirite", and while there's nothing wrong with a "Faith and Will vs Magic and Power" story, it's as if there was almost no point on there being a war or unrest among the races since the humans would just be secretly superior and they're really just holding back for no reason.
In TES you have different human races with different stories and characteristics other than skin. The nords have a huge pantheon of legends from across the ages, like Shalidor, Wulfharth, the Dragonborns and many more, as well as the redguards having a long backstory of growing into strong warriors after ages of wars and invasions. And while the bretons are technically half-elves, their traits, society and traditions reflect that of the humans a lot, while still having magical capabilities able of matching those of the high elves.
And even their Jack-of-all-trades human race, the imperials, have some cool backlore and got all their versatility due to emerging from many other races. And their huge territory and empire, out of diplomacy and war strategies.

This is why I could never believe the bullshit stories about UFOs and close encounters. Pretty much all of the descriptions of aliens sound like budget reproductions of a TV sci-fi series in that they're just modifications of human beings. Some are just flat out idealized human beings - like the "Nords" Partly I think this was due to simple lack of imagination and projecting their own fears of other humans onto an external "other" so that they could still function in the day to day. And partly because there were some really antiquated ideas of what evolution is and how it worked. People routinely talked about aliens waiting for humans to "evolve" before welcoming our species into space. They didn't grasp the concept of the process taking hundreds of thousands or millions of years (even if we're just talking about undoing parts of human nature and not superficial physiological changes)… and that when that change happened, by definition we would no longer even be human (or just human) anymore, so why even fuck around with us in the mean time as if we could do anything about it? This old popular use concept, which was never part of the actual theory of evolution, also carried the assumption of "evolution to a perfect form" which, because humans assume that humanity is the apex of evolution - that highly evolved species would look human. So aliens even more advanced than us, logically, would then just be human looking with vestigial traces of their former forms.
This isn't to say that all alien life will look completely incomparable to anything we know on Earth. Similar environments will produce similar adaptations. Fish, Insects, Birds, and Mammals have all evolved along some lineages to take advantage of the atmosphere for flight - and their adaptations have similar qualities in functionality though very different in form. So any life which evolves in an atmosphere rich environment with a similar composition and density to our own will have species that have developed similar flight mechanisms (again, at least functionally). Or something like bilateral symmetry would probably be something to expect out of alien life since it's a good shorthand for genetic coding that - once evolved, would likely succeed and dominate due to how efficient it is.

Off topic, I find it funny that everyone tries to just copy paste ideas from the real world into video games. My favourite under utilized race concept is the Scro:
Following a crushing defeat under the elves, an Orc commander under the name of Dukagsh made the decision to abandon the backwards, barbaric ways of his people and adapt the tactics used by the Elves who bested him. Dukagsh even went so far as to reform the Orcish religious system in order to create a society that would produce stronger, healthier, and smarter individuals. Scro are arrogant, strategic and proud like Elves, but strong, devoted and war-driven like Orcs. Their goal is to wipe out all non-Scro in the wildspace. The Scro despise their Orcish cousins, and spit upon the ground which Elves tread.
I don't think there's a single game that features anything akin to them. Then again, I don't think there's a single game that can be truly likened to Spelljammer, past the Spelljammer game SSI made and that awful Russian MMO Allods Online.

Warhammer Fantasy is surprisingly an exception to it. High Elves are truly a high race, one of the biggests civilizations in the world and only after a long time of wars & cataclysm, it is in decline now (But doesnt mean dying); And you stil have Wood elves, that are more like the Fae people, and tree-huggers but not the faggy way, and at last the Druuchi or Dark Elves, that are sadistic pirate elves living hardcore Alaska/Canada.
Dwarves are the decaying Bizantine/Roman empire of the setting, as in that most of the Human civilizations culure of warhammer (Not just weapons, but language too) comes form dwarves. And dwarves in Warhammer have Slayers for example. And then warhammer also have Lizardmen, Skaven, Ogres that worship eating itself, and a interesting concept of "Orcs & goblins". And the human nations there are overall good, with the exception of Bretonnia, being more in the early modern era, than in High medieval period. Warhammer looks generic at first glance, but then one discover how amazing it is.

I was refering that the Dwarfs are, for the Human civilizations of the Old World, the big first civilization they encountered, and so they got many things. Thay arent byzantine/roman in style, but they are the Roman civilization to the precursor nations/civilizations of men in the old world, which were barbarians or (very) early medieval feuds.

On another note, Warhammer Fantasy's chaos dwarves are one of the more interesting factions of the setting. They are able to use magic unlike the other dwarves - with the tradeoff that their adepts slowly turn to stone over time the more magic they perform. They are arguably even more industrialized and technologically advanced than the regular dwarves, but they require an enormous amount of slaves to work in their factories and mines since they are even more scarce population-wise than regular dwarves in Warhammer. They are also responsible for creating the "Black Orc" variety of the Greenskins in an effort to create a perfect slave race.
They also have a spiky Babylonian aesthetic if that's your thing.

being a necromancer is about clawing tooth and nail to victory with the tedious use of soul stones and using the bodies of fallen enemies to your advantage, being a good necromancer is a slow startup because you need to scavenge for your dead, and those dead have probably been that way for long enough that they are brittle and easily dismantled. Necromancy requires taking those steps into the dark and forcing your enemy to their knees through careful planning and tactful strategy. If a game gives you infinite skeletons that game is probably just a necromancy power trip and it's probably actually pretty fun to watch your skeleton hordes demolish the shit out of things.
Speaking of, Nekros is really fun to play, summoning cyber zombies of enemies with at least similar health pools is fucking delightful when you see them tick away everyone's health.
