Why is the mace the best weapon in the game?

It's good but I barely dipped my toes in it. I liked that you could buff your starting skills by aging your characters.

I've been playing it on and off for a long time now, and the bloody game just surprised me with an event I haven't seen before. A prisoner in one of the cells of a tyrant keep lord joining, and offering reward for safe return to a nearby fugger branch.
>aging your characters
Not something I'd advise you to do, though.

It's skills VS attributes more than anything, and you can raise any skill while playing. They also lose some attributes as they grow old. But the sweetspot is probably about 25-30. You have good 20 years to muck about before you need to think about changing your roster, decent enough starting skills and you may even luck out on some starting saints and shit.

OP, is it any true the next game was going to be set in Japan? I remember reading they wanted each one to be set in a different place.

I don't know man. I know some saints and the manual make reference to England, Spain and Italy and I can imagine the Parliament war, the Reconquista or the Borgia/French invasion fitting this game but who knows. The game also nearly bankrupted microprose so I don't think a sequel was ever all that likely.

Yeah, that's true but I think some design notes were made for a sequel before they shipped the game. I'm trying to find that article, it was posted on the codex some time ago. Might have been an interview.

The only thing I'm personally using is related and a notepad with the copy protection symbols and basic notes but whatever works for you. I wouldn't cheat, though. Nürnberg gear and basic understanding of the alchemy will get you thru everything with no trouble. As for what gear, as long as it's scale+ on the torso with chain and plate later, and boiled leather on the limbs you'll do fine. The only weapons I'd advise against are the polearms other than the halberd, guns because they're way too slow to reload and the falchion.

So while roaming around the Frog border a local kid from some boondook near Nancy came along and suggested we kill a dragon in Silesia. That's more or less a four+ month journey by foot. We naturally accepted, stripped him of his q35 plate armor and fed him to some pigs.

Oh, yeah. One thing I should probably mention because it will fuck you hard: avoid the swamp tile terrain at all cost. Not only does it massively slow you down and waste time but there's a chance for a truly evil event to happen. One of your guys basically gets stuck in quickmud and if you don't know a specific saint (and that's not something you'll know or be capable of invoking until well into the game) you'll either straight up lose that character or at the very best if you've got a high Agi character, most of his inventory. One time it even took an artifact from me.
And take a look at the cluebook that comes with the GoG torrent. It will help a lot to understand how armor and such actually works.

It is effectively in the grey area of whoever owns the rights as not giving a shit if you just snab a copy and run directly on dosbox yourself but you need to read a lot for exactly what patches and tweaks you need. GOG already tweaked DOSbox in the installer so it's more convenient and quality of life to use that one. It's a real shame Darklands has lots of potential or at least copying the style for other settings. I'm really tempted to do Star Wars or one of the cooler or obscure DnD settings, or FASA Shadowrun Genesis gameplay meets SNES storytelling. But I'm always too lazy to start or try.

Shadow of Riva is the third title, alright? As in, it's meant to be played with a party that you imported, together with the gear from the two previous games. First time I played it I didn't have any real problems finishing it with a brand new party, with no internet access, no previous experience with the dark eye system, no manual or guidebook, and while still in elementary school. So give me a break.
