PCs and consoles used to be completely isolated platforms with their own pros and cons and now consoles are literal PCs and in the case of the Switch, a literal fucking mobileshit machine.

Everything has become more centralized and homogenized and both demographics and investors have changed and trends along with them.

Hardware is expensive and is very fragile, you just can't put that kind of shit to public's abuse, plus people may topple and break their faces or limbs and with US-like retarded legal systems they'll be able to sue. There is no reason for a big publisher to release a game for one platform unless they're paid to make said exclusive just like in case of all those Sony exclusives. In their eyes it's a big potential loss and they're not wrong about it while small developers have to make PC games exclusively because it's much more accessible.

There really is more problems outside of the industry that is inducing the decline. First off the recent boom in video games from the past ten years is due to opening up in the Chinese and Indian markets. The west has maxed out it's consumers on who plays video games. If we had a stable currency that isn't subject to inflation then companies needing to grow rapidly or die wouldn't be that big of a deal. Video games businesses are easier to start up more than ever. However unless you break a million dollar company in your first year then inflation is going sink your company within five years. At least in the west.

"Indies", by that I mean hipsters with deep pockets and Hollywood connections, are the only people in position to start a successful video game company at this time. Unless your game is a miracle indie darling with very few flaws without criticising the wrong politics made by yourself then you're practically screwed.

Plus the talent and veterans see the writing on the wall. They are leaving video games because they no longer have the freedom, independent or not, to make whatever they want. If you make a game that criticises the wrong ideology then SJW media cabal will ruin your chances of employment in STEM fields. Sad that handhelds are so small but not surprising. Not much innovation outside of gimmicks, Nintendo dominates that realm and Playstation being the only real competition they had barely put up a fight, and with with Nintendo pulling the hybrid console tactic, they might see the writing on the wall and phase out handhelds to combine it with consoles instead. That's usually the route of consolidation that happens with any form of tech. I don't think handhelds will survive like how laptops and desktops still exist side-by-side. It's much easier to have a dedicated gaming desktop than a laptop. Handhelds have always been a generation or two behind the consoles but they made up for it with their dedication to games, unlike mobile which has been mostly time wasters and money depositers. I'd rather handhelds continued because I like actual games but if is going the way Nintendo intends with the hybrid tactic of the switch, I wouldn't mind that much.

Too bad mobile is that high. I understand why devs are jumping for it but I don't think it's that sustainable in the long run. It might seem that big now but once those regulations on loot boxes kick in, it'll freefall like everything else. Not really sure of VR since I haven't heard any must-play games for it. I think there is an important point that those predicting a video game crash are missing. Video games haven't grown as an industry because they have become better, it is that the rest of the world has become worse. People are rapidly becoming shut-ins as real life becomes easier to monitor and control, and so people are fleeing towards games. What was once an interesting hobby has now become a utilitarian distraction. The quality and type of games reflect this, especially idle games. Would people have thrown money at a game where you literally wait for hours doing nothing in the 80's?
