Cities are built the way they are depending on both geography and age. Boston is hilly which isn't conducive to straight streets (cheaper to go around a hill than to bulldoze it flat) and was built a little at a time, so expansion was random. Outside of extreme cases, it doesn't. One such extreme case would be a short barreled rifle chambered in 5.56, where the barrel isn't of sufficient length for the bullet to reach fragmentation velocity, which means you've got shitty icepick wound channels. If you were to upgrade to a rifle length barrel, the bullet will physically cause more tissue damage as it will fragment as it enters the body. This doesn't really apply to other firearms though.

You can even play the first few minutes and check for yourself, if I remember correctly RE2 gives you 120 bullets before you reach RPD, compared to RE1 giving you maybe a dozen in the same stretch of time.

You're very right. Outside of changing barrel length or switching to hotter loaded ammo, "Upgrading" a firearm is mostly for reliability or to get the gun to function in it's sweet spot.

IE people can upgrade their glock recoil springs to ones with a metal core instead of plastic and stronger springs. This tends to keep recoil down, as there is more power in the spring. And the added weight from the metal core (the good ones use tungsten weights) helps keep the muzzle down while firing. People can also replace a small safety plunger that the trigger bar rides on. The OEM is not polished and has a hard edge, making the trigger pull a bit gritty. The replacement is rounded and polished, and made with harder steel. This makes the trigger a lot nicer with a significant reduction in the grit. This in turn allows shooters to focus more on the sights and target than their trigger pull.

Now, upgrading the barrel from a shitty milspec one to say a nice properly lapped and polished barrel made for accuracy, MAY increase the velocity of the projectile SLIGHTLY. I'm talking 1-5 more feet per second in a barrel of the same length. But compared to the increase in velocity gained for 1 inch of barrel (typically 50 or so FPS) it's way to expensive to be practical. Those top notch barrels will cost more than the base gun in some cases.

There are some types of rifling that get tighter seals with the projectile, this gets a bit more speed out of the bullet. Octagonal rifling is just that, its a spiraling octagon that squeezes the whole bullet tighter to the walls of the barrel. Compared to traditional rifling that cuts grooves into the bullet as it is spinning down the barrel.

You also have twist rate, which is how many inches it takes to make a complete turn of the bullet while in the barrel. This is very important as too fast and the bullet comes out the barrel it starts to fly out of the point of aim. Too little and the projectile can start to tumble in a myriad of ways till it hits the target, some times sideways.

Now, if you see the "Upgrade" as hardening the receiver and action to allow for higher pressure rounds and changing the twist rate for a longer projectile, it can make sense. Its similar to how M1 Garand owners will change out their gas block to allow them to use higher grain hunting ammo without blowing up their gun.

And keep in mind, back in WW2 you had ammo meant for your service rifle and ammo meant for MGs, but it was the same caliber. MG ammo was in a lot of cases hot loaded for armor penetration, and using it in your service rifle was a very unpleasant experience.

You don't need a very sharp sword to make cuts, in fact over-sharpening a sword makes the edge more fragile, you can cut a goza easily with a broadsword blunt enough that you can run your hand along the edge without worry. If you made an entirely new sword out of a stronger material, then you could potentially increase the amount that you can sharpen the blade without concern for it's durability, and it would hold it's edge longer, however it doesn't really get any better than steel. Not to mention that swords can't cut through plate armor, so they would have been used more for thrusting attacks against armored foes, and a point is not really going to hold an edge for very long anyways.

While it was a trainwreck for other reasons, I will point to one specific example from Danganronpa V3. Spoilers. Case 5, why was it possible to disable the control panel leading into the room and the hydraulic press safety mechanism if it detected living things, but not the hydraulic press entirely non-functional. The general theme of that case was two characters conspiring to make a murder case that nobody could solve, not even Monokuma. So they used a thing that disabled all electronic devices in a certain radius, which disabled the safety feature, and also the ability for Monokuma to see what happened, and then with the video of the body being crushed, they rigged it so that the two characters switched places when there was a slight pause in the video. While the idea was neat, it makes fuck-all sense. It's clearly a reference to the 5th case in Danganronpa 2 where it was literally to make the killer indeterminate, except that the one murdered relied on their trait of massive luck to make it the one he wanted to actually kill him and to wipe out everyone because they were basically Junko.

I mentioned added velocity via longer barrels. Also the idea that longer barrel=better accuracy is not completely true. A longer barrel can flex more than a shorter one. It's a reason benchrest rifles have thicc as fuck barrels that are short. It is also gaining traction in the tactical market. Lots of sub 20 inch barrels are being put on precision rifles because a thicker and shorter bull barrel is stiffer. Look up high speed camera footage of a rifle firing and you'll see what I mean.

Back half is definitely an AR/M16 kind of deal while the front half is some kind of shotgun. Although the barrel on the shotgun seems like it was shortened substantially and they put on a very tall fin style front sight. I can't tell if that's the rear sight or some shit on the walls, but it's only about 12 inches back from the front sight which is pretty shitty. If that's just some shit on the walls then the rifle/shotgun/thing doesn't have a rear sight.

As far as what the fuck is going on in the middle, I have no idea. You can see the remnants of the dust cover right above the mag release on the AR/M16 portion and it's folded down, but there doesn't seem to be an ejection port there. The big silver oval right in the middle seems to be a shotgun style ejection port, but that doesn't line up with the barrel, so the casings must be doing some strange ninjitsu to get out of the gun once it fires.

The shotgun portion at the front still has the tube magazine, so maybe shotgun shells are loaded in from the bottom? It's very strange all around.

The question then would be for what purpose. My best guess would be that when they shopped the entire soldier from different sources (like the collage indicates) they couldn't get any complete gun from either source to mesh with the perspective and lighting the frankensoldier needed, so they just merged the guns as well. Given that the focus of the picture is clearly the title and the soldier's face, it works until you look closely.
