if I only watched evangelion and gurren laggan, how much mileage am I going to get out of the series? What's the recommended viewing list before you even attempt to get into the series?

You don't need in depth knowledge of all the series in SRW, but it helps.

try a few shows and see if you like them. knowledge isn't really necessary, but the games might spoil things that you haven't seen yet.

Can we move beyond Getter Robo: Armageddon? I love the ova as much as the next guy but it's been 20 years and the series has better designs.

If you're getting into it cause of the crossover aspects than yeah, go watch gundam… most of the foundation for these stories/worlds tend to be heavily based around the UC gundam shows. Though… just getting to Char's counterattack is a lot to go through.

But I wouldn't suggest just buying the newest game. The quality fluctuates like crazy. And it kind of just comes down to the story and if they want to try making it not piss easy. I'd recommend Alpha, (Or Alpha Gaiden since that has a fan translation) or F/final.

Learn Japanese and read the one good Demonbane. Then watch Go Nagai's entire catalog(not simply the mechashit). Z1 is my personal favorite. All the new series got a good amount of representation and plot, the tri system was great for getting as much people out as possible while not as tedious as Alpha's squads and Gunleon is on of the best OG's in the entire series. Shame about the rest of the Z games.

Moon Dwellers is several parts into the OG storyline

start with OG1 and 2 for GBA if you're going to go that route

That's not to say that Moon Dwellers is not playable, but plot wise it is a few games deep. Sadly, the only English releases we have relating to the OG universe/canon, are the first two GBA games, with several main line and "Lord of Elemental" sub games untranslated.

You're sure to find someone you like out of the huge cast though, even without context.

Dropped the Tri system. Less focus on the series from the first game in favor of more focus on series like Code Geass and 00 Gundam culminating in them dropping Baldios, Gravion, Eureka Seven, Xabungle and God Sigma. The plot itself also went to shit, even by the flimsy standards of plot most SRW games go by, with shit like time loops, multiple earths and enemies that are supposed to be BEYOND MORTAL COMPREHENSION.
