It's surprisingly hard to find games that do it well. I know the warioware games do a little bit of this, and there's a lot of flash games that do it, but usually it's just slapping a 2d character into the environment without thinking about how to make it work. anyone have any good examples?

>I spy

Good shit.

Myst, Riven, and Exile also did this for all of the characters that you meet. I think it worked best for interacting with Sirrus and Achenar in their prison books, but it also worked well for meeting other characters later on in the story. I'm not quite sure how they pulled it off, but I never felt like the live action characters clashed with the CG environments. I think if they had used entirely CG models for the characters, it would probably have been fairly uncanny and distracting. I know there have been other games that did this, but I can't remember their names at the moment. I know Mortal Kombat used sprites based on human actors, but I feel like I remember another fighting game that used the actors themselves, and not sprites based on the actors.

ikr, I think this is one of those games that everyone within a specific age group has played but it only when we were like just barely able to form memories.

Another good example is the final boss of super fancy pants, though he should have added some kind of shadow effect to the character sprites

Cuphead used foam models for some of its background, an animation technique that is authentic to the 30s.
