Been a while since I enjoyed a game as much as this one. I think the last one to really hook me was Yakuza 0 and that was more due to some autistic dedication that triggered in my brain, this is just pure enjoyment.
Anyway, if you have never played a Wonder Boy/Monster World game they're very tight exploration focused action platformers, or metroidvania for you psued's out there. They're difficult but fair and put a focus on platforming challenges that ramp up in difficulty, if anything the closest other comparison I can point out is if Zelda 2 evolved into its own style of game that expanded the game play in as many directions as possible.
The new game in the series is by some French fans of the original and it took them years to get everything until it was just right, constantly re-drawing characters, hand drawing every level and art asset and eventually some big names like Yuzo Koshiro, Motoi Sakuraba and Michiru Yamane (among many others) to do things like the music, sounds and help with the direction of the game. It's kind of incredible but it plays amazingly too. The levels are creative and each puzzle feels incredibly rewarding to figure out, even the ones that might seem cheap end up coming full circle to be satisfying. It doesn't feel like one of those generic indie metroidvania's that thinks using hallways and ladders is an excuse for inter-connecting levels and instead ties everything together with tight knit platforming challenges and puzzles that just feel fun to solve.
I'm only about half way through now and just got to the underwater section of the game, it's amazing how they actually made movement underwater fun with the frog and snake. Going through the sequence to get the pirate's bomb had me sniffing out invisible platforms, swinging from loops to manipulating a cannon to shoot objects in the background to fling a treasure chest to where I can access it, to boiling myself in the pig form to convince a pirate his pork stew was ready. If you're feeling burnt out I can't help but recommend this one a ton, or any of the big Monster World games like The Dragons Trap or Monster World IV. Have you ever played any of these games before? Did you try the Dragon's Trap remake? I think the PCE version of that game is still the best.

The Dragon's Curse on PCE/The Dragon's Trap remake (Not the SMS original), Monster World IV on the Genesis, and Monster Boy. They're all excellent and MWIV features one of the cutest protagonists in a game ever who went on to be copied by Way Forward and made into Shantae. If you like Shantae style games this is basically the origin of them but a lot better.

Game heavily suffers from mobility creep
>double jump
>double jump + able to step on clouds (never used again)
>double jump + able to walk on lava (hardly used again)
>double jump + dash up in the air
>limited flying
>infinite flying
>able to phase dash four times in a row
Also the shmup sections are terrible, bunch of fixed bullets and boring aimed patterns, absolute snorefest
Frog movement while swimming is fucking shit, hitting up or down rotates AND moves you relatively FORWARD, instead of just rotating the sprite instantly and moving in the direction i moved the stick in.
The first half of the game is fucking terrible, until you get the lion and it becomes fun but then the game overall level design becomes too much 200iq thinking and trying to search around the area, I find myself finding secrets than trying to progress the fucking game. As soon as you get your human form your pig form is fucking end of the barrel useless other than sniffing out treasure, great game along with the frog's tongue being experimental when used on enemies, might fuck yourself over or might be the key to winning.
The music outside of the temple is also very unmemorable. What's with the Japanese and english opening, the Japanese opening is laid back and is sung by a female singer but then english opening is some 4kids-tier fucking garbage.
Oh yeah I clapped at the very 'subtle' reference to the first few wonder boy games, felt like a fucking gamer right there.

>hitting up or down rotates AND moves you relatively FORWARD
the entire game has momentum in movement, it would be jarring if it didn't have this. Maybe the problem is you're playing with a stick and not a d-pad.

Currently stuck in the Lionman/Temple stage.
The pacing of the game is really good. Levels are short but the challenges come thick and fast, each clearly an evolution of the ones prior. Then it's on to a new mechanic.
I also really like that each enemy recolour has new behaviour, even if its as simple as the blue muscle snakes being able to jump.

Just now 100%'d Cursed Kingdom. Good shit. Art style was subpar, but it grew on me. Metroidvania gameplay style, but you can change into different monster boys with different abilities. I've been curious about this series for a while, and it's why I picked up Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap first (inb4 Orson Welle's opinion on the French).
Just wanna know if there's any other enthusiasts for this series here. Now I wanna play Wonder Boy IV, and Monster World V. MW3/Wonder Boy in Monster World is great as is the Dragon's trap (MW2) and Wonder Boy III/Monster Lair on the PCE CD and Genesis are also great. Wonder Boy and Monster World are the same series, just different names and are a good way to differentiate the styles of game play. The Wonder Boy games are arcade platformers in their style and design. Monster World feels more like it took that tight platforming from Wonder Boy and gave it new life in an exploration focused shell. The whole series is a mess of ports/reinterpretations/licensing of game design but not of name. It's a weird mess but that just means there's tons of unique games to find out there and little twists on some of your favorites.

I guess I'm calling this from the anime intro. Though if you look at Jin's face when doing a down stab, it looks kinda potato in quality. Not saying the art is bad, just needs tightened up a lot more.

Right, the naming scheme for this series is confusing, as is it responsible for things like Adventure Island. I'm sure all the ex-Westone employees are spread out to other development teams. Sega's been really flexible with the classic properties they hold on to. Sometimes for the worse but they often surprise me to the point that I'm confident in their handling of it. It's complicated, right? At the time Westone owned the game play and plenty of others licensed that out from them and all they did was re-do some art and change the title. Sega owned the name and characters however. Westone went under in 2014 and they hadn't really done much that stood out to me since the Saturn.
Not to mention the series creator worked on Monster Boy now.

The game was released extremely late in the Saturn's lifecycle, even for Japan, and right in the middle of PSX Final Fantasy fever. I don't think it ever really stood a chance.

Monster World starts in Wonder Boy 2, Wonder Boy in Monster Land, and the last Monster World before the game this thread is focused on was not Wonder Boy at all. I also believe the arcade game Wonder Boy III Monster's Lair does not take place in Monster World. The arcade game is a completely different game from Wonder Boy the Dragon's Trap
So, there is one more Wonder Boy game over Monster World, and they are not all a part of both series. In this, not all MW games feature Wonder Boy, and not all Wonder Boy games take place in MW.
