I like to hop into empty Minecraft servers and take screenshots of what I find.
Here's some bits from the cutting room floor while I find a proper server to explore. The first four screenshots are from a Japanese server I swear I've visited before, while the last is from a tiny German server.

Horses are a thing. There was a combat update so off-hand items are in vanilla. The water update made swimming, dolphins, underwater zombies, and underwater structures a thing, and you've also got Elytra, basically a pair of wings that functions like a hang-glider, but it's only available once you reach The End.
All in all, 1.13 is looking to be pretty damn comfy.

They did add a "bubble column" mechanic where magma blocks create a column of bubbles that drag items and entities downward (and soul sand does the reverse). Not only is this convenient as fuck for movement and item transportation, they also stuck loads of magma blocks at the bottom of sea ravines, so you can just be going along in your boat and suddenly run over some bubble columns and get sucked down into the deep abyss.

The elder guardian was such a disappointing boss. Its custom status effect is nothing but a severe annoyance easily solved with an inventory full of milk buckets, and just getting to it is more hazardous than it is because of how many normal guardians can spawn. Also it drops literally nothing as loot. The only point to killing it is so you can either disassemble the temple for its blocks, or to create a specific mob farm. If you're not a hardcore player… just go around the whole thing. Why bother?

>Draining large underwater structures used to be much more time consuming
It still is. Because water sources create other water sources, you have to subdivide sections up so they're small enough for the sponges to actually work, which means dropping sand/gravel anyway. If you don't place the sponges correctly (meaning, if you don't spam them fast enough) shit will just flow together and re-fill up the area you just cleared. You have to place less sand, sure, but the time you spend placing, gathering, and redrying the fucking sponges almost negates that, considering you can place sand as fast as you can click and re-mine it very fast if you have aqua affinity and a good shovel.
Sponges seriously need a buff of some kind, like within their effective radius they not only delete water sources but PREVENT WATER FROM FLOWING, essentially creating a perfect air-filled cube that lasts until you remove the sponge. As they are right now, they're useful but only barely because of how minecraft water physics works.

>working my way down
You mean placing each sponge on the bottom of the previous one? Shit, man, you'd need so many of them to get from surface level to the bottom of the ocean. It's an incredible pain in the ass to find more than a couple stacks of sponges because sponge rooms spawn so rarely in the temples in the first place. I've had times where I raid 10 in a row and don't come up with any more sponge than the few I get from the Elders.
Unless you just mean basically just taking out one layer at a time, cooking the sponges, and then moving on to the next layer? I guess that would work just as well, but it's still very tedious.
