I'm actually working on a script right now for a video where I take a look at the history of the series leading up to this game and why I think it's both unjustly overlooked and what it could have done better.
I've always liked this game but I also think it's an odd duck.
831e0f No.16039844

Odd duck my ass. If you ask me that game and its even more forgotten sequel are the natural evolution of the SNES Super Bomberman games. Bomberman Hero was good, but a spin-off and rightfully so as indicated by the title. I feel bad for PlayStation owners who got the incredibly shitty isometric Bomberman game.
d0b73c No.16039887
>>16039844
I mean "odd duck" in the sense that the game almost feels like it went out unfinished. it does feel like the natural evolution of the more adventure/puzzle aspects of the previous games but neither it nor the sequel really fully explore their ideas nor do they make it easy for newcomers to understand what to do and why it's good even though it's not the classic bomberman formula (though my memory of the sequel is significantly more hazy and I need to play through it again to really be sure of this feeling).

I didn't feel they were that hard to understand. The first game has a tutorial which explains every mechanic you need to know and the puzzles in the very first stage are designed to force you to use every mechanic to get to the end. Granted this tutorial was not present in the second game, but the more technical aspects of the first game (bomb jumping) were replaced by the usually much simpler elemental bombs in the second, although the wind and ice bombs can make things interesting sometimes.

I'll give you that seeing bombs explode on a radius rather than on a straight line was different but unironically made the game a hundred times better to play, since now you have a chance to escape so it's less a game of Chicken and footsies and more a game of positioning and meta.

It's sitting upstairs waiting for me, I just wanted to get the history part of the script out of the way first so I can go into it with the history in context instead of going in blind like I did when I originally played it.

The NES Bomberman is my go-to "play while listening to a podcast" game. I love how stupidly overpowered you can get by the later levels, especially with the items that let you walk through walls and become immune to your own bombs.
This boxart is also ridiculously unfitting, but cool.

The "tutorial" he's talking about is in the end credits of the game, after you get the first ending. You can play through 80% of the game and not know a damn thing about the bomb jumping mechanic, and said mechanic is almost entirely used in just the very first and last worlds of the game.

The first world is pretty easy, though, assuming you aren't trying to go for all the gold cards. There are tutorials in the form of Sirius telling you the basic controls and mechanics, and a few hints throughout the levels, but he doesn't teach you about bomb bouncing or hopping.

I am a completionist, always have been. When I played through DK64 I wouldn't move on to a new stage unless I was 100% positive there was nothing else I could get on the stages already open (I'm one of the few people not bothered by the "backtracking").
It took me ages to figure out the rest of the mechanics on my own. I just couldn't let those goals dangle in front of me.

What the fuck are you smoking? Literally the first stage has an NPC that tells you how to do everything, cute diagrams included. It's by the grating on the bottom right of the map in this screenshot I believe.
Also I forgot when I made my first post but Second Attack has an even more in depth tutorial despite the generally simpler mechanics.

Sirius tells you all the basic shit, like placing, kicking, and throwing bombs, but he doesn't tell you the advanced shit, which is required for accessing the last world and getting the true ending, and what the discussion is about. The advanced mechanics aren't intuitive, either.

Sure, but that doesn't really teach you things like the fact that you can use it to make stairways, or that you can bounce Bomberman, himself, across bombs. What I really hate is that bouncing Bomberman puts him in the stun animation, which really makes it look like something you're not supposed to do, at all.

That's exactly what I figured out by myself though. The stairways are more technical but follow with some experimentation. Basically if you actually try to get some of the extra shit in plain sight in this game as opposed to just completing stages you should figure it out. Good level design helps.
>What I really hate is that bouncing Bomberman puts him in the stun animation, which really makes it look like something you're not supposed to do, at all.

It's pretty obvious you can use bombs to jump gaps but building upwards chains is a pain in the ass. Tiny differences in bomb placement and their individual bouncing can make the difference between successfully jumping forward from bomb to bomb or getting stuck like a dumbass.

I always go for Super Bomberman 5 and 64.
Mostly because 5 is the feels like the most fine tuned of the classics and 64's 3D formula is pretty fun on multiplayer.
