Anyone know any good space strategy games?
940241 No.16024329
I wish there was something akin to a non-horror Dead Space 1. I.e., a game where you enter a derelict space ship and restore all of the various sub-systems - its drive, life support, and whatnot - back into a functioning state.

So blasted through the dozen or so missions in the campaign. First off, graphics look gorgeous. There's something about mods for old games like Bridge Commander and Battlezone 2 that replace the old textures with more modern ones and it makes you feel like you're flying through space and shit.
That said, there were still plenty of bugs present. Dialog repeated over and over in the first mission forcing me to restart, enemy units would fire on your units in cut-scenes while they did nothing, phases cut out on some ships. That kinda thing. Also if you choose a ship like an Excelsior class for instance, anytime you select it, it will say "Excelsior standing by." Any of the mod ships like the Star Stalker class for instance won't say anything. Just a small thing but it does break immersion.
One thing that this and Bridge Commander have in common is that the AI flight paths in combat suck. Much easier to assume control of a ship and direct it yourself.
You can only choose Fed ships for various missions as well, if you pick one of the custom ones with Romulans or Klingons for instance, it defaults to 4 ships already on the map.
That being said, was still pretty good. Also one of the last Star Trek games for awhile since as Mad Doc folder, CBS split and the Abrams movies were made.
Also 2 new favorite ship classes, Star Stalker looks like a cross between Sovereign and Excelsior classes while I live the X engine design on the Defender class.

Maybe. That is more of a RTT than a RTS, as there is no resources, building up of forces and instead its about using set resources to solve a problem how best to murder chaos cultists. Which is a problem itself because higher level ships cost the same as a first level ship. The quality is also all over the place because of their attempts to balance things, among other things like the AI being pretty damn stupid at points. The Eldar AI will frequently ram you like retards in their frail ships.

As always I will recommend Sins of the Prophets. It's a space RTS based in the Halo universe, and you can set up 1700's British-style firing lines with giant railguns to fight the aliens, and drop nukes when they enter knife fight range.

Atlantis is still worth it. It has some of the better space battles, and gets to flaunt how much humanity has progressed from "4 guys with smg-s walk through a gate" to "Fleet of unstoppable deathray cruisers bristling with super-nuclear missiles."
>That sounds pretty amazing.
It is pretty amazing, that's why I shill for it. Halo lore has insane potential that was only realized in that mod, and some of the books. I should get some gifs or webms of the bettter fights; they showcase the cool stuff better than the static pictures.

Nah, normally I find it pretty ignorable, I was even fine with the “girl power” episode of SG-1. Really, the only time it gets on my nerves is when it’s obvious political/social preaching that becomes the focus of the show and that normally only happens with entertainment after 2010.
And yeah, I’ve been jumping back and forth from DS9 to SG-1 when I start getting a little burnt out on one. Figured I’d throw Babylon 5 in there as I see people swear by it in these threads.

What bothers me with Stargate is how they idolize the Ancients Lanteans when they are the one who are the reason for all the bad shit happening not just in one but 3 galaxies.
Pegasus: Colonize the galaxy and have orgies and shit until they create Wraith. War for hundred years happen then they evacuate to Earth and ascend. They could correct their mistake and not have the humans live as cattle for 10 000 years but decide they don't give a fuck.
Milky Way: Ascend and leave their toys behind for the Goa'uld to find, they use them to enslave humankind for thousands of years. Ascended ancients could correct it but they decide they don't give a fuck.
Avalon: Ascended ancients decide they could help their fellow humans and give them the gift of ascension, other ancients tells them to go fuck themselves, they get mad and leave, humans live happily.

It started amazingly, and i didn't finish it. I don't think it went shitty, but it just became something I didn't care for (particularly in the plot/lore department, because "defeating the ancient evil that has reawoken" will never be as interesting as "megacorp political intrigue with black ops space fleets"). Also in my case, the combat later on was SLOW, as in it took several minutes of continous firing at point blank range to take things out. Might've been because I was on easy difficulty, but i'm not sure how the game handles difficulty settings.

It goes in a different direction, the game starts with "low-tech" human ships but you find an alien cruiser in an asteroid and you commandeer it. You get to jump to another system and find a lost human expedition and link up with them and their advanced ships. Low-tech are pretty much never used again but they felt really good. The game is still excellent.

I unironically liked the story campaign for CoD: Infinite Warfare for being confined to the solar system (some ships have jump drives, but they can't go far enough to reach nearby stars). If only they gave a shit about writing a decent villain faction and fleshing out the world a bit, I could have legitimately called it a great piece of science fiction. Had that wonderful Halo knockoff homage in it's visual and technological design, with a bit of Battlestar Galactica tossed in for good measure. Gameplay was nothing special though, obviously.

One compromise that I never understood why I don't see very often is low grade military, freighter and low grade civilian ships shouldn't have fancy shit like antigravity or inertial dampeners. These ships would have more of the spinning crew sections. You cut costs where you can, and dealing with radiation shielding is a lot more important but I vaguely remember more games talking about skimping on radiation shielding than artificial gravity.

Bounty hunting and participating in high intensity conflict zones (try to find "war" systems from the map screen for these) in a Viper is fun for a few hours, and taking trade missions from station to station is good for another few hours. Aside from that, it's not so good. I hear there's ways to make good money exploring if you metagame and look up routes people have planned but I don't think that's fun so I didn't do it. I admit that watching the nebulas and starfields slowly change as you spend 18 hours slowly jumping to the galactic core is soothing and comfy, especially with the engines purring in your ears; I watched the last 2 seasons of SG-1 doing this. Thargoids are overrated, and the glamour of encountering them in the 'Goid sectors wears off fairly quick; you will probably not reach the point where you can take them on; only the worst of autists ever reach that point.

It's just annoying with its 8 phases. Until Phanon goes broke 8 times or gets enough money it will go straight into next phase until last one. Victory condition against them is just to completely destroy everything they have.

Their advance can be stalled by dropping 20+ Lasertowers on gate between Unknown Sector Omega and Tokyo Lambda at both sides of gate, until Phanon or OCV destroys them. Some fast ship with decent cargo bay can be used to reclaim some minerals from destroyed/capped OCV M4 transporters. Just don't get too close to sector center.

Yeah me too. IW did a better Destiny than Bungie. I love the art direction, clearly a lot of thought was put into it. Sad that the world building felt flat, especially on the enemy side.
I always see Infinite Warfare as the Black Flag of CoD, the game should've been a new franchise. that way they could have spent more time on the development of the solo game and removed the multiplayer.

The only episode that was pozzed was in SG-01, when the team found an advance civilization, they all agree to share technology if they helped them fight their enemies, they didnt like tealc though, so O'Neil was checking their crew list thingy and then he bailed the fuck out of there. They all asked why he decided not the help them, and the reason was, MUH RACISTS NAZIS, they were all WHITE, they didnt like tealc because he was a jaffa, they didnt like him because he was BLACK!

Get the biggest ship you can and charge at Eldar when they're recharging their shields but before they boost away. Got 3 kills when my battleship rammed ships in a straight line. Was awesome. Then while your big ship is soaking fire, you have your frigates and others follow in behind pick them off.
They can pick off your weaker frigates but if you have brace plus ramming you should be okay. That's assuming you're imperials. Not sure about other races. As for necrons, find it a bit weird they can mutiny and even have morale at all. You think soulless skeleton robots would be immune to morale.
I'm not even sure if ramming was covered in the tutorial, you got to do it with the Phalanx against the Blackstone fortress but works better if you practice it a few times with actual ships you can use.
I still suck at using torpedoes, the new population mechanic for a ship is a nice touch as well, allows you to salvage wrecks if they become unmanned and can hopefully warp them out to save them. Haven't gone up against anyone else apart from Chaos and Cosairs as Imps in the campaign, so I'm looking to see how the others are.

>>16053840
While that's true in the sense that the force is spread more evenly (as the magnets accelerate over the entire length of the barrel), the projectile is being fired in a tiny fraction of a second. The station still needs to compensate for 2.1E+20 Joules of kinetic energy, which would be unchanged if it were a traditional gun. The greater time the slug is being accelerated (0.005 seconds vs 0.003 seconds, to throw out example numbers) is not relevant outside of a structural situation.

Played for a bit and here's my two cents. They have a page on steam and were doing Betas there earlier but then switched to the epic store. This pissed a few people off and they're waiting till Jan 2020 to release it on steam, thing is I played a few hours on a cracked copy already and the gameplay is pretty bad. The basic cycle of gathering resources is a bit tedious, you go down to planet missions which you think is cool till you have to go 3 times to get everything and you only start with the basic stuff, requiring you to gather 2 DNA samples to unlock a research item like a weapon that you can carry to different playthroughs. Same with clones and the like. The grind is pretty high and mining is No Man's Sky in just waiting 10 seconds for a rock to burst.
Worst of all though is this business decision to wait an entire year before releasing it on steam. It'll be forgotten in 1 - 3 months and then when it does go on sale for steam it'll be boycotted by people who had it on their wishlists but had to wait an entire year to buy it. It's just stupid.

An anon recommended it in another thread, and I agree. My main issue with the gameplay is that the firing arcs are depicted in 2D, but Z-axis limits are important to consider. Everything else is pretty easy to figure out, but I don't remember seeing the z-axis on the arcs so I am figuring it out through trial and error. Not a big issue, but mildly annoying.

Im at turn 105 or so and recently got Macragges Honour.
Whole of map is under my command and every other major faction has been pushed out.
Now there is only the chaos system left that was opened after i destroyed the four chaos champion fleets.
Gonna go full blog post now and spoil the bosses and what they are like (including that one chaos sorcerer you mentioned there).
Necrons
>They got another world engine, this one is named dark throne
>You fight in its orbit, destroying some orbital platforms and necron fleets that come to ruin your party
>The planet bombards you with some pretty powerfull cannons until you get to certain point in the mission
>A battle barge from Raven guard and a strike cruiser from Blood angels come to help you
>Raven guards crash land their barge on the planet in order to set up a vortex bomb
>They give their lifes heroically to end the Necron menace while you blow up their fleets in orbit
Eldar
>Here you get a choice, side either with an =][=nquisitor who wants to remove pointy ears, or side with the elven faggots to protect their craftworld, Eldrathain is with them btw.
>In my current campaign i decided to join the space dendrophiles and so had to fight the =][=nquisitor and his massive fleet of fellow imperial ships
>At my disposal were two fleets of pointy eared pansies who kept on getting themselves killed, also they gave me control of the craftworlds cannons
>One imperial genocide later the =][=nquisitor decides to move closer so he can fire his cyclonic torpedoes at the craftworld, i rush to him before he gets to the point and manage to kill him, only for the game to think that he had gotten to the point and reveal to me that it was all a plot to get the =][=nquisitor close enough so they could fry him with their defense guns.
>After this the faggoty elves leave the system saying that our temporary alliance is over, because they didn't say how long they were planning to fight alongside us, while clearly implying that they were gonna fight alongside us against the chaos forces
Chaos
>So far they have had quite a few sub-bosses, and here they are.
>One angry khornate who hides behind an asteroid field that teleports demons aboard your ships if you get too close to the asteroids
>One sneaky Tzeentchian who hides behind an asteroid field that teleports your ships around if you get caught up in their dimensional fuckery fields, also he pretends to be Abridail and his ships appear as imperial ships till you start damaging him
>One filthy Nurglite who hides behind an asteroid field that is infested by plague ridden flys that come to infect your ships if oyu get in between the asteroids while the flyes are migrating
>One lewd Slaaneshian whose asteroids stop your ships and cause their turrets to stop working for a while if you get close to them during the rave hour
>Then there was that one Sorcerer who you gotta board and not kill for the Eldar, some time fuckery goes around in that one and you get stuck in a time loop till you try and warp out of the fight the warp out button actually starts blinking during this part
>And then in a part after beating the four of those above captains you get an alert in Agrippiina system where they found a system that leads to holy terra (according to flavor text), you get to fight against the planet killer again in here, but don't worry, Macragges honour comes around at this point and at least in my game didn't have enough time to bring its guns to bear before my two Retribution class battleships and other assorted cruisers and battlecruisers tore the planetkiller a new one

> (SG Atlantis has some annoying SJW shit though)
I watched plenty of Atlantis episodes, but I can't remember progressive stuff that particularly stood out to me. This was way, waaaay back when it originally aired, so my memory is super hazy, but there's one thing I adamantly remember with crystal clarity: Dr. Weyr (sp?) is the most unlikeable fucking cunt to ever grace Stargate anything. Leaving aside the fact the actress herself does an underwhelming and stale job, she's such a horribly written character because everything she says and does is absolutely insufferable. She constantly has this "I'm a strong intelligent leader who does stupid things and acts like a bitch" aura, and because her actress isn't good, it feels like someone trying to act like a strong and smart leader when they clearly are neither.
782c22 No.16065581
>>16065478
It's mostly due to Weir, yeah. I noticed very quickly that she will say retarded shit and make awful decisions, and then the plot will worm and warp to make her correct retroactively. I chalk her up as a sort of Mary Sue. I saw everything about her character as feminist propaganda (unlike SG-1, Atlantis was primarily produced by pics related because "yes, every single time").

And the first thing that struck me was they've completely overhauled the UI so that it's actually bloody playable now. No longer do I wonder about where to get items or what the hell a shanty does, they've cut those down so it's more manageable. Also included a handy little log with locations of NESW for instance. Have yet to go into the combat or do deep exploration but the fact they've made the UI more friendly at least to me is a step in the right direction.

My autism is not powerful enough even though I watched the series many times. Season 5 is optional but maybe watch it for Lochley, she made my dick hard as a kid. The problem is that many episodes have small references to the greater arc. This is my attempt.
Let's see for Season 1:
The Gathering
Midnight on the Firing Line
(*) Soul Hunter
(*) Mind War
(*) And the Sky is Full of Stars
Signs and Portent
A Voice in the Wilderness 1
A Voice in the Wilderness 2
Babylon Squared
Chrysalis
Soul Hunter and Mind War are not really required but contain some bits of backstory, Mind War introduce Bester which will become an important character later, and the PSI Corps. I'm ambivalent about And the Sky is Full of Stars, it is not that important for the Shadow War as is Signs and Portent but give a good account of what happened on the Line and that the Minbari might be more than they appear. Criticism is welcome.

You and the enemy follow different rules so that you can have time to get to invaded systems or don't just get swamped defending systems and unable to progress. Particularly with the ships coming from out of a sector from who knows where.

I don't think there was Z axis in the firing arc display. The way to solve that issue was to just stack your ships so that your flak barrage(s) end up covering all of the available Z space. That also means that you are able to put out a huge volume of fire against a single target.

But anon, Freespace is fine with mouse and keyboard. HOTAS obviously a best but that shouldn't prevent you from playing best space sim ever.
That aside if you get a stick you might as well buy once and buy right. For Freespess I would want at least 2 hat switches for targeting and looking, and a lot more buttons since it's quite a button intensive game. I would think the T16000M meets the critical mass of buttons where you basically don't need to use the keyboard at all. The X-52 definitely does, despite being a piece of shit. For the T-flight I would expect you'd need to use the keyboard just as much as the stick itself. Which is definitely a less cool feeling.

Either way, I don't think it's possible to avoid using the keyboard with Freespace if you want to use all the controls it has to offer. Weapons, targeting, wingman commands, power management, shield arrangement, hotkeys…there's a lot of stuff.

I'm not sure, but Helium Rain is pretty good. It's like X but hard sci-fi, and combat is terrifying. Also every company grows as you go, so it starts out with just small ships and a few corvettes, and eventually works its way up to big fleets of shit with way breaking out over finite resources.

The only seriously abstracted thing is that you use a fast travel system between areas - the time it takes varies depending where you are and where you're going. I think you can be intercepted while fast travelling but I personally haven't declared war on anybody yet.
Within a sector, you can accelerate indefinitely with no speed cap and all projectiles and missiles inherit your velocity, hence the horrifying combat where everything shreds each other in passes; there's a skirmish mode where you can spawn in all the ships you want to play with to get a feel for it. While your HUD displays damage to broad categories like "engines" "weapons" "life support", the game actually models damege to dozens of components on even the tiniest ships, so you can lose all the reaction thrusters on one side and things will get really wonky. Or you could lose a coolant pump, or a specific weapon, or something else. Time is passed in units of "days" which you advance either through "ending" the day, fast forwarding through multiple days, or fast travelling. Money and goods are produced at the end of each day (or turning in missions, which are generated based on the economic state of the stations/factions giving them and sometimes a good indicator of trade opportunities).
Personally not a fan of the visual style, which I would describe as "shiny russian," but the planets look nice in the background.

Not that I'm suggesting that writers like China Miéville and Yoon Ha Lee aren't overrated and oven-worthy.

There is also foldable ones. Venting can work, but it can be considerably more efficient. Using a nozzle to heat the propellant and use it for thrust. Every single one of those vents imparts force on the craft when in use, which might fuck with your trajectory and therefore your careful little calculations.
Not to mention every gas used for venting is gas spent on venting. You can use mass in much better ways, especially when you can radiate away heat for free with radiators. Radiators that, although they can be fragile, they can be armoured up fairly well and retracted when not in use.
The best idea I thought of about close-combat heat management was giant heat batteries. Supercritical water tanks that store up heat inside the ship while the radiators absolutely cannot be used. Thermal batteries. It can then be vented afterwards - or, if all else fails, the entire tank can be ejected and or used as propellant. Using waste heat for regeneration in thrusters is also a good idea. The only other option is using a black hole to radiate waste heat, but have fun designing something that would work with that concept.

I liked it more than the first one, actually. We get to see the Hiigarans become a powerhouse and wage proper war, and I enjoyed the faster pacing. The embodiment of what I liked about 2 is from the invasion cutscene where Makaan is giving his speech, and they fire surface-to-space missiles back; really contrasted things with HW1.
c21220 No.16137880
>>16137556
I think the level of heat generated on a warship would be very insufficient for use as thrust. The thermal medium in your ship can only get so hot before the structures that carry it will fail. And concentrating heat in one area requires work and generates more heat so your ability to pile all the waste heat into one rocket chamber where it contacts reaction mass is very limited. So the exhaust temperature is not going to get above a couple thousand degrees C. Hilariously bad exhaust velocities and specific impulses would ensue. I'm not sure if it's better than nothing.
Some innovative take on a liquid droplet radiator would be more fruitful. Or the black hole thing. Very few people actually care whether a concept would work from a scientific standpoint as long as the technology is presented with a lot of thoughtful consideration in terms of mechanical design and limitations and sells itself well. Even projects considered "near-future" like Orion and Daedalus are cheated beyond belief from a technological standpoint, so fuck it.

Which is why it is usually very inefficient to disperse waste heat using vents. The only worthwhile application of venting-cooling is the Hydrogen Steamer design, which uses either boiling hydrogen or helium to blend with the background heat signature and basically be thermally invisible. Even that one doesn't primarily use the hydrogen for propulsion, instead dispersing it equally in all directions and relying mostly on solar concentrators for a power plant.
The most practical and likely to work variant would be tons and tons of redundant but fairly fragile radiators, especially on a battleship. It won't matter if a shell non-destructively knocks out one, two, or even a dozen radiators as long as you always have two more to replace them. Even inter-reflecting radiators are better than nothing. Making them fragile (but making them out of a cheap and light material that doesn't spall easily like potassium or magnesium) allows you to save on mass which you would otherwise waste armouring them up.
The only real way of dealing with mid-combat heat management is to have practically no heat dissipation requirements. Rely on thermal inertia and use mostly thermally-inert weapons systems and thrusters. Missiles, low-velocity chemical ballistics, closed cycle chemical rockets and DUMBO core nuclear thermal rockets come to mind. Make your combat ship into a Gyrojet pistol - as light and simple as physically possible, put everything you can into the bullet which is disposable.

Here's my two cents on it.
Gameplay is fine, pilot leveling and mech management are nice, the fact that you can never use more than just one lance (4 units) at the same time is shit, but what can you do in the age of nu-xcom and such?
Story is either secretly genious or utter garpage and here's why!
You help a princess regain her lost kingdom and in the process fuck up said kingdom six days till sunday. In original battletech lore the said kingdom doesn't even exist and according to some lore books said area is under control of the two other sides we come in much contact with during the story, the Magistracy of Canopus (they fund our rebellion) and the Taurian Concordant (we fight them for a while). So basically said kingdom will fall in the coming 50 years or so and it is most likely because of the shit Princess kamehameha and mercenary commander (you) do, at least you get rich and get some great mechs to your arsenal during that war.

Missiles are not an engine type, you might as well define a spaceship as a powerful engine then.
Generally missiles use either a RAMjet engine or a rocket engine to propel themselves (usually a solid fuel rocket motor). Rockets are the most powerful engine type by a long way, and are significantly more powerful than even SCRAMjet engines. The advantage of airbreathing engines is in-amo range and fuel efficiency because they can use environmental air as part of their propellant, so a jet engine with 100 pounds-mass of fuel will be able to go farther than 100 pounds-mass of rocket propellant with the same payload, but it will go slower, and can't go into space. This is why cruise missiles typically use jets to go long distance, and anti-nuclear missiles use rockets to go really fast for interception.
