I picked up the new .Hack remaster but forgot it is actually the sequel to .Hack//Roots so shelved it to watch the only series i never got into back in the day.
Part of the story early on is the mmo the games set in is growing increasingly buggy and players are treating bugs like something between bad weather and hauntings.
Nowadays in real life MMORPG's can be hotfixed much easier and serious bugs are rare and strange bugs don't stick around for long.
Whats the actual buggiest mmorpg you have played? How did the players deal with the jank?

I played plenty of those back in the day. My favorites are Tale of Pirates and Eden Eternal, and most of them are buggy due to collision detection.

well, there is a new " " "official" " " server, but it still has a cash shop.
i honestly don't trust the owners of the new server. mainly because i was there during the IGG server hack and knew the hacker, but this person died last year and now some shadowy unknown figure owns his forums (dedicated to making private ToP/PKO servers) and the new server to go along with it.
IGG deserved to get hacked though, definitely. the problem is i dont know who's at the helm now, and to top it off, the server only allows you to register with a facebook or google account. that is the shadiest shit i've ever seen.

IIRC, a large chunk of the inspiration for .hack was from PSO and the problem Sega had with cheaters there because they decided to leave it as a peer to peer game where player-data was stored client-side. They really didn't even bother to fix it, and any patches they could have really issued to address the problems either had to be implemented server side (like the double-save that ended up being a high-risk for corruption or providing an easy target for permanent NOLing) or had to be ignored because no HDD and VMUs didn't have enough memory after already having a large chunk of their capacity taken up with character data, login data, and guild card data saves. The only platform they could have issued patches on was the Xbox version, and they were so lazy there they couldn't even be bothered to flip off the Christmas decorations on their way out - leaving it a permanent holiday season for over a year.
I've also been playing through the .hack "remaster" lately, and even into the third game I still haven't shaken the feeling of being on the verge of just wanting to drop the game and walk away. So much of the story of GU is reliant on the various TV shows and manga and other spin-off material that it makes taking the main games as they are a confusing mess. What little other experience I have with the series from the original quadrology and //sign doesn't help much since there aren't a whole lot of references to the original events outside of some core plotpoints - and even characters that had direct involvement with the original plot are (if you can even spot them) completely oblivious to the parallels so far. Like.. to keep it vague for spoilers - Wiseman is back, but he doesn't seem to recognize Azure Kite as Kite. Haseo is Sora from //Sign - which isn't a spoiler, since it's never revealed in the game so far - but one of those facts that you're supposed to know from the expanded brand. So.. even assuming he's suffering from Amnesia, the fact that he was in a coma due to the events in R:1 is a major fact that others (like his family) would know - and that he would also know through them. And the .hackers and original games events are portrayed as being fairly well known according to in-game forum posts - yet Sora never bothered to look into the event that caused him to go into a coma and lose his memory? He never saw the parallels between what's happening in R:2 and what he learned from looking up the events of R:1 and his involvement in it?
It's a convoluted mess and fucking terribly designed, because they weren't interested in telling a good story - but in getting you to buy the merch and expanded lore. I will say, though - that even though I enjoyed the setting and plot of SAO: Alternate - Gale Gun Online way more than .hack, it's only been a few months since I played it and I already have trouble remembering the plot - whereas I still fairly well remember the plot of the original .hack games I played over 15 years ago. SAO is garbage and I have no desire to see more of the show or play the other games - but GGO as a show was a great take on the VR MMO concept, and it's just a shame that game was inconsequential and forgettable to that lore.GGO could have eclipsed both .Hack and SAO. Shame.

Sign in particular was pretty good at showing the sort of people attracted to a virtual world as a means of escaping their actual lives, to a point that very few characters, at least amongst the main cast, are simply playing it because of the fact it's a game and they want to have fun.

The last time I played this with /v/, we ran into a leveling road block. The levels of the areas and subsequently the mobs were capped at the server's level. This was in 2015. Has someone found a way to quickly and efficiently level a server, or even hack a server to max level? The highest level we got was like 27 when we stopped getting xp from mobs.
cbae01 No.16031377
>>16031306
we have figured out exactly what levels up a server.
there are around ten different field types
each field type gains exp when you clear portals and open the gott chest in a field of that type and its dungeon. when a field type gets to 1000 exp it levels up. the server level is the average level of all of the field type levels.
because of that running the same field over and over will only bring your server to level 10. you have to level up all of the field types.
normally there is no way to check the levels and exp of field types but now we've made a third party utility that lets an area server host check the server and field levels.

a server host should direct players towards what area types need exp.
a good area server host must also actively construct and update the field list on their server as it levels up to ensure that the players are not just stuck with newbie areas. when protected areas, data bugs, and other special content unlocks on the server it is also up to the server host to make sure the players have access to it. the server host basically gets to roleplay as a cc corp admin unlocking the secrets of harold's black box. its a unique experience.
cbae01 No.16031591

i also should mention that only fields with monsters equal to or above the level of the area type give the area type exp

if there is, you'll have to look for it through your search engine of preference.
>without cash shop bullshit
PKO/ToP was always a game for whales. its the essence of korean gaming, flexing your cash online is what moves korean microtransactions and that game seems to not be capable of shedding off that curse. the server that they had before the main dev died was the best server out there because you could do very small amounts of grind to obtain the same items you could buy with cash, and they shut it down for this one where you can't do that anymore.

I wouldn't really mind, I tend to play MMOs by myself anyway with the exception of sometimes with friends here or there. Is relaxing to explore the world by yourself, and usually just interact with other people if a dungeon or monster requires more than 1 player to be killed, and even then, I usually end up soloing those.
It'd be nice to have a small private server to hold a gamenight or just have it low just because, like /v/scape or something like that.

its not an awful game if you manage to circumvent the jewery with creative coding and maybe custom quests, like the previous server they had did. and i'll be fair with it and say their cash shop doesn't have the ridiculously overpowered shit that the original had, but it is still pay to win in the basis that you can buy that stuff, sell it for ingame gold, and then buy ridiculously overpowered shit from other players with said gold.
