(Posted in previous thread but I might as well put it here too)
Haven't finished it yet, but for anyone wondering how good the game is here's my rundown:
PROS:
>Soundtrack is quickly becoming my new favorite for the entire franchise. Sound design in general is fucking GODLIKE. Can't wait for the full soundtrack to drop.
>Imo the Plot is holy trinity tier. Of course it still has its cheesy moments, but it's a good in-between of AC5 and AC0/AC4, so it also pulls off some great serious moments.
>Aircraft definitely feel a lot less same-y than the PS2 entries. When I went from the F-14D to the MiG-29 I could actually feel the difference. For example it feels like I have a lot more freedom to maneuver at high-AoA on the MiG-29, which makes sense for that aircraft.
>Parts also make a difference. I honestly didn't expect to use them much, but I found that they really add to the experience and let you tweak your aircraft to be exactly what you want.
>graphically the game looks GORGEOUS. Playing it on a base PS4 right now and damn, even at ~970p (don't know the exact resolution) it looks fantastic. There have been a few times where I've seen it drop into the 50fps range, but for the most part it stays close to or at 60fps. Cutscenes are always at 60fps. Aircraft models are of course crazy detailed as well.
>For a console game, it has a lot of options for your control scheme. I was able to tweak it to be exactly like the PS2 games.
CONS:
<The first mission is nowhere near as memorable as the PS2 entries, especially Zero. It's not bad by any means, but it was mostly there to tell you the controls. Even on hard the enemies barely put up a fight.
<Really not a fan of how restricted head movement is in cockpit mode compared to the holy trinity. You can hardly look up so at times it's difficult to keep track of exactly where enemies are, especially against drones. That being said it is something one can get used to.
<Bamco can get fucked. My AC5 and digital bonus codes still aren't here. Opened up a support ticket and now my email's getting spammed with "We'll respond in 48 hours" messages over and over again.

Any suggestions on which planes to buy. F-14 has been my planefu since I was 4 or 5 so it was my obvious choice as my first buy. A-10 is my second favorite plane but I don't know how good it would be considering every mission always seems to end up involving air-to-air combat. I've got my eye on the Hornet but kinda want some MiGs too.

Nothing, I just fucked around with the VR mode for a bit. Spent the first mission trying to get reacquainted with the controls, and then it was over. Cockpit looks nice, but low resolution. Everything is readable, so that's a first, but it still looks like crayon drawings over cardboard boxes. Some of the HUD elements and whatnot don't really align right with my eyes giving me a sensation of double-vision. For instance, when the sun is behind part of the canopy in the right eye, but part of it is visible in the left eye and that eye is flooded with bloom. But that's probably just a matter of needing to re-calibrate it. Mission areas aren't very fun to just free-fly through. Ocean/Mountains/Plains. Would have been nice if I could zig-zag through buildings or had some more vertical obstacles (like that space elevator from the promos), or canyons/buttes to fly around.
Also, and maybe this is another issue with my config, but I couldn't really get much in the way of audio when hitting the throttle. I expected to hear the airframe creak as the engines roared a bit… but nothing.
Also, I only unlocked two planes so far. Not sure how many are in the VR mode altogether, but I was hoping I could at least dick around with a wider variety of jets.
If you're at all interested in the PS4 version for the VR component - it's probably the best cockpit VR experience, but it's just an "experience". A tech demo, like GTSports neutered VR mode. I knew it wouldn't be the full game going in, but I was hoping for something more than just a "look at this cool thing we made that you can't play more of". The only reason to not get it on the PC is Denuvo, and overall you're really probably just better off waiting for a crack/repack.
The VR mode is nice, but not worth giving Sony money for I think.

Actual spoilers.
The ending is pro refugee. Although someone on cuckchan said it was just displaced Erusean refugees, but nothing in the ending or previous cutscenes say it's just Eruseans. Also, it's another "Belka fucks up everything" plot. It also seems to be pro-globalism and anti-borders, especially with "but what is a nation?", mentioning borders you can't see, and at the last mission where they introduce you as an Independent Squadron with the claw marks going through both the Osean and Erusean flags. It's the opposite of Zero where you BTFO A World Without Borders, a Globalist terrorism group, and where Pixy starts to see the importance of borders in Zero's ending. The game is still fun as fuck at least.

I'll post this again from the last thread:
4, 5, and Zero. They're called the holy trinity for a reason. You can play them in any order though, there is no overarching plotline, though 5 and Zero's stories are connected and they all take place in a shared universe. I personally recommend playing Zero, then 5, then 4. If you're wondering which ones are most relevant to 7, it's 5 and 4.
-Zero is the shortest and in my opinion the tightest of the three. It's the quickest to complete, so it'll also be the quickest way to know whether you'll like the series. I also recommend it before 5 as a key moment of the game is semi-spoiled by AC5's opening cutscene. Zero has just about everything great about Ace Combat bundled up inside it, and in my opinion the best story overall of the holy trinity
-5 is the longest of the 3, and also BY FAR has the largest aircraft selection. It's absolutely massive, but does suffer from a bit of bloat in the middle of the story. The story isn't for everyone either, as it's definitely heavy on the drama and the dialogue can be cheesy, but it also has quite a few fantastic moments and the ending is my absolute favorite of the series (Though Zero is still a very close second)
-4 is the one I'm gonna get a lotta shit for. People fucking WORSHIP this game, and it is absolutely a great game deserving of being in the holy trinity, however I don't think it's quite as polished as the other two. Nearly every mission is "shoot down X number of aircraft within X time to win", which gets boring after a while. All-in-all it very much suffers from just being old, so it has a bunch of weird quirks from the PS1 era of the series that the later games since then don't have. As I said though, it's still a great game with fantastic moments, and its story is a treat. Definitely worth playing, just play it after the other two.

The gameplay is solid traditional Ace Combat, and I'm happy that the Unreal Engine didn't ruin the feel of it, but I'm still trying to process the plot. It feels like stuff got cut or altered during development, leaving things a bit disjointed.
The Princess was seriously under-used. I thought she would get a hell of a lot more development and screen time.
I still don't know what the fuck was happening when Harling was flying toward the space elevator, but then again the characters later talk about how they don't know what he was really doing either so you aren't supposed to? Also there's no way anyone would assume he got shot down by friendly fire on purpose, when your systems can't even target him. I thought later on in the Penal Unit when that guy "accidentally" targets one of your wingmen and gets him killed that it was going to turn into a plot point that your targeting systems were hijacked… but then nothing.
Since Scrap Queen is a civilian, you'd think after being pardoned she would just try to go home, she's not a soldier and presumably isn't getting paid to be there, or is she?
Did I miss some mention of Nagase on a space mission, because her passionate thank you speech out of fucking nowhere at the end felt way out of left field. "Reclaim the space elevator to save Nagase" seems like it should have been a goal introduced somewhere along the way.
How did Mihaly survive getting shot down? Maybe it's not worth questioning. Scrap Queen should also have died in her crash at the start of the game too if we are going to go there.

I always tell people to play 4, 5, 0 (release order) and then you can go wherever else you want from there (except don't touch Assault Horizon, however if you have a 3DS you can play Assault Horizon Legacy which is actually just a good remake of AC2).
The reason >>16017946 says to play 0 before 5 is because that's how they are chronologically, but I personally adhere to release order because minor changes in mechanics and control schemes can weird you out if you are breaking the order they were released in. Very, very minor though, so it's not a terrible idea to use his order, just a consideration.

So, can someone please explain Belka's rationale with the drones? Obviously the writers are poking a lot of fun at the Belkans with the inclusion of Tabloid the anarchist and Mad Scientist Doc (((Schroeder))) making drones to make drones, the antagonists' motivations just seem really muddied and nonsensical to me. Given that HOLY BELKAN CLAY meme wasn't even involved in the game, why the FUCK do they give two shits about what happens in Usea? Just to drag Osea and the whole world into conflict? The fact the commie Yuks air dropped supplies to the refugees was a bit of an ironic subversion of the Berlin airlift post-WWII. I just feel like there could've been a lot more to the story line, but there was a good amount of cuts and edits in production. It REALLY would've been fun to see the penal unit as being a really fucked up anarchist/pirate unit in the vein of the Ustio mercenaries from AC0 that, due to their skills and abilities, start to gain more influence in turning the tides of the war and would've helped cement the whole "dude, like, nations suck, why don't we join together as humanity and reach for the stars? :^)" ending.
That said, how the hell else could you make a game and war that is, at its heart, is a total synthesis of the holy trilogy?

While Belkan clay wasn't in this game, there was the theme of countries policing the world and taking over others. The Belkans anger and need for revenge against Osea was just like all the tiny countries rebelling against Erusea after communication around the globe got fucked. I can not believe I thought this game was going to be good. It's made all the worse because the actual gameplay is decent. I regularly told people that this was the only game I was looking forward to since 2017. You didnt get a single player choice to make in the whole game. You just sat there and got told things that you were supposed to care about. Remember how you actually got to know Chopper? Grim? Heartbreak One? Yeah, none of that. Remember how dramatic it was when an enemy formation came in and there was a small cutscene with some character exposition? Yeah none of that.
This entire game can be summed up as:
>Go to a place and shoot soldiers so you can go to the next place and shoot soldiers, until the end of the game where you shoot a guy in a tunnel.
Thats it. No story. No characters you get to know and like. No big dramatic reveal. No pivotal moment in the plot. Just fly and shoot and dont ask questions, sinner. I played 5 and Zero ten times apiece because of how engrossing they were. I don't think I'm even going to play a new game + for this one.
And the music was only so-so.
What the fuck? Should I be happy it wasn't as bad as Assault Horizon, or should I be mad it was as mediocre as Electrosphere?

Was anyone else really upset at how they handled Spare 6's death? It seemed to me that Bandog was concerned he knew too much and might've been about to blow the lid on some major shit, so he saw an easy way to get rid of him and fucked with his IFF. Especially since he went out of his way to confirm Spare 6's position in the formation and make sure he was marked correctly. This could've been a great opportunity to take the story in a far more interesting direction, rather than completely gloss over it like nothing happened.

I can agree that when AC games focus on drones things become a lot less compelling, so the last mission basically being kill the same two drones twice but the last one is an easy target inside a tunnel is pretty underwhelming.
I had hoped that having the same writer as 4 and 5 would result in the Holy Trinity becoming the Holy Quaternary, but instead I'm mentally comparing its place alongside 6 and X. Solid, traditional AC gameplay but with a story that doesn't grip me as hard as I would like. As cheesy as 6 is, one might have to argue that its plot is overall better constructed, even if it does throw in some stuff I don't care about like that random tank crew that wants to steal some shit.

AC 5 Preached hippy bullshit all game, but the story, and the style were absolutely outstanding. Even though I laughed at how in your face the game was with it's anti war angle, I still connected with all the characters. It was easy to place yourself in the game world and empathise with everyone because it was well excecuted and all of the characters felt like more than cardboard cutouts. The music changes were so dramatic and the tonal shifts were very real feeling whenever rimfaxi/scinfaxi showed up. You feel sad for the nuggets who couldn't make it to 3000 ft. You feel anxious when you're searching the snowy forests for Nagase. And you feel excited when you find Bartlett.
With AC 7 the story was crap and there was no style, making the game one big preachy pile of garbage with no flipside of the coin; making it a mediocre game. Who are you supposed to connect with? Do you connect with some broad that digs through garbage and talks to you twice in the game? Are you supposed to like Count, who's only there to say "how dare you, you bastard" because Trigger doesn't speak? Or do we like the anarchist whos there for three missions and is referenced at the end to get killed off camera doing something you don't see, and can't change. Are we really supposed to like the awacs operator because he eats a sandwich? Is that it? If you're going to lower your expectations, you might as well just go play assault horizon and talk about how you're "woke enough" to enjoy it being shit. Afterall, assault horizon has jets doesn't it? By your own metric you should "stop being outraged and enjoy yourself".

Remember how when the space elevator gets shot at in the beginning, and upon questioning the osean pilot says he was just "following orders"? That made it seem like there were elements in the Osean army that had thier own agendas, and it gave a very menacing overtone. That plot point goes nowhere. By the end of the game someone says "Oh ya we snuck drone pilots in Osean planes in to shoot at the space elevator and harling, because osea gud boi, didn do nuffin."
This story had so many chances and teases at becoming really good. But it didn't commit to any of those chances.

It seems like they were too mesmorized by the trilogy to make AC7 good on its own. Take the Farbanti mission. Almost the same exact mission from AC4 except you come from the land instead of the sea. Even has the enemy squadron come after you finish the main mission. Or mission 16 which is also like the one from AC4 where you liberate a city at night while you listen to broadcasts about the fighting.
What I really don't understand is why they didn't give you choices like in Zero or AC3. Couldn't choose to join different squadrons or different missions. Makes you wonder what they were really doing these past few years.

While the PSVR missions look phenomenal, I personally think they should've put the time, effort and resources into making another 5-10 missions for the main game instead of doing the VR. Then again, I'm sure Sony persuaded Bandai to cut/shift development time to go for the VR aspect to increase sales and the like on that platform, doubly so when you consider the one year exclusivity on the VR aspect. A LOT of the plot threads just seemed to go nowhere and I feel it suffered from a lack of cohesive development from it. That said, the gameplay aspect looks like it's on point, so I'm looking to see what kind of mods and crazy things the PC fanbase comes up with in the future.

Didn't IGN have another review where they were called out by a player that showed they didn't even play on the normal difficulty because they would have gotten another level to play and get the true ending and were caught editing the review. I forgot the name of it but it isn't the first time IGN was caught doing something stupid. Mainstream critics in most mediums are likely too retarded to be taken seriously, which they shouldn't.

Zero is still the greatest. 7 is better than 6, but I cannot get over the obvious logical glares concerning the:
1. motives of the characters. belka holy clay scientist backs off after….(why??). The obvious Artificial Intelligence Boogeyman just ends up sapping any weight out of beating the final mission(s) because you've already beaten Mihaly. So it just feels like a hollow extension of that fight, which by the way, really was well done only because of the soundtrack. felt like VERY well trodden territory, moreso since the quality of the trailer set things up to be much more confrontational than they ended up being.
2. the missed opportunities the devs had with you, the "pilot", flying over scrap queen, or tyler island, being seen in the story in the framing cutscenes, or really holding any weight in the story other than being a mary sue superpowered faggot. which is par for the series, but it feels so much more bleak and hollow without any sort of actual reference from the narrative. everyone just sucks your dick over the radio. which I will say was well done. contextual and stays abreast, and keeps the combat in focus at the same time.
3. scrap queen does save it a bit, especially at the end. and some of the "twists" in the story were well done like with Harling and I laughed when Kestrel finally died. but you never get the feeling like you're coming back from obscurity or the "brink" during the story. nor do you ever feel anything but annoyance at the big "chaotic" conflict when the satellites go out. they somehow tried to manifest this into the gameplay by making you have to stare at the enemies longer before shooting them (i shot almost every enemy without identification and never failed a mission). story really felt all over the place and while it comes together at times it has a very ace combat 6 feel, where you just do not give a fuck about gracemeria or any of the forgettable shit happening.
All in all, I'd give it a 7 objectively. I'd like to think of this like 4, where its a solid launch into a next gen "airspace", if you will, and will spawn better titles down the line. Anyone else agree/disagree? I love the series, I've been in blackout until I got ahold of a copy to play and I've been dying to talk about it.

You've wholly missed the point. In other games where you went, who you shot, and who you were mattered. In the older games Yellow squad mattered. You got to know a few of them. Razgriz mattered, you get to see how they interact when not in aicraft. 8492 mattered, you learn thier history and who they were. Pixy mattered, you watch him change throughout the game. They were more than just one dimensional plot devices to move the story forwards.
Who mattered in AC7? Was it the gambler who dies in two missions? Was it the anarchist who talks to you twice and then is referenced to die off camera at the end? Was it bandog, who is with you for five minutes then gets promoted and you never see him again? What were their names? Where were they born? Why were they in the penal unit? The only semi fleshed out characters are: the doctor who has questionable motives, the dumpster broad who just wants to fly, and Mihaly who just wants to fly more.
When the kestrel goes down in AC5 the captain has been with us for some time. We see him talking to the reporter, we get to know him, he addresses the player directly. When all the sailors stand up and salute the Kestrel as she goes down, you feel emotion. What happens when Kestrel II goes down in the new game? You go, "Oh, okay", because it means nothing to you. There is no object or vessel you care about. You take virtually no meaningful material casualty for the while game. If we didn't know the former president from before, his death would have meant nothing. I would go so far as to say it does mean nothing as he was only implied to be there. What were everyones motivations? Everyone wanted the space elevator because "the economy". Thats literally it.
In this one nothing mattered and the game ends with a repeat of the arkbird fight but with drones this time. With the exception of Sol (who is in the game for a grand total of three missions out of twenty something), there are no enemies that are humanized, which is a hallmark of the franchise. The enemy pilots are just as nameless and interchangable as the russians trying to take over burgertown.
This game was an Ace Combat game in gameplay only.

Alright, so it's not just me. I felt like every emotional tie in the game banked entirely on AC4 and a bit of 5. I didn't give a shit about any cast members introduced in this game. I had a greater emotional swell hearing the familiar voice of the ISAF briefing officer in the latter third of the game. The mission briefing. A character with no face or name.
Arkbird did have drones, though. Remember the Vogels? Along with a pulse laser on each wingtip and a sustained beam mounted in the middle. It was the Arkbird's Echo Fighter.

>>16038812
Oh yeah. And I want to call out that this was intentional. The back of the box specifically advertises the game as "being steeped in Ace Combat lore". The game was designed to be as self-referential as possible.
Towards the end of the game, when you're looking for a place to evacuate to, the briefing officer's manually-controlled mouse cursor darts around a little as he considers options, and lingers a bit longer than the others on an island labeled MEGALITH, just long enough to make you think you're about to take shelter in its bombed out ruins.
I did like the Stonehenge mission, but that should have been where the reliance on 4 ended.

I've been doing some light research and I was incorrect about one part. The Arkbird had two lasers total. The orbital strike one mounted on its belly that was used to shoot down missiles and pierce submerged submarines, and an anti-asteroid pulse laser mounted on its top.
I'm actually being an autistic fuck and jotting down notes on a piece of paper on how the two compare, and it's increasingly obvious that the Arkbird was a repurposed civilian project and the Arsenal Bird is the militarized-from-day-1 version.
Side note, Arkbird launches 4 Vogels, not 2. Arsenal Bird, by comparison, launches 80 MQ-101 drones.

I have to disagree with this part. In AC5 that mission was all about chasing after the Arkbird as you shot it. The Arsenal Bird is a much slower target that wants to hang around and fight, and has the drones and shield as a way to shake things up.
The rest of your post is pretty spot on though.

I'm aware of the technical differences in the fight, but I'm speaking in generalities. You chase a large, white, monolithic object, that deploys drones, has laser defenses (one being a large beam weapon on it's underside), was seen as a symbol of peace, upon which you destroy it's means of propulsion, and then deal a finishing blow, ending with you witnessing the craft impacting the water.
Beat for beat it's almost identical. I understand wanting to be self referential, but this was a bit heavy handed.

I stick to large airborne (bomber) and ground objects (tanks and ships) with the guns. The range is further than just when the targeting reticule shows up. For other jet's I use it as more of a weapon of opportunity if they happen to be close and in a similar trajectory. You'll get a feel for it. On the right side of the altimiter is a distance meter, the colored part shows weapon range and the chevron shows your target distance. It descends on the vertical bar the closer you move to your target. Your gun pipper shows up at a roughly a quarter of missile range. Use that as a gauge, you'll get the hang of it.

I can't imagine the Arkbird having anything less than nuclear in its powerplant. The booster it fires to reach orbit is pure blue and it doesn't have the physical dimensions to be carrying fuel for more than half a second of burn. And it just stays on until you destroy it. So it's probably some kind of plasma jet. Not to mention powering a laser that vaporizes asteroids and can bore through fucking salt water to skewer a heavily armored submarine aircraft carrier/boomer. I saw someone calculate the laser's output once and it came out to double-digit gigajoules. And that's when he calculated for fresh water.

Gitting gud with machine guns is super satisfying. Learn to use your rudder control to slide your gun scope onto targets while also arcing tight combat turns 'up'. Once you're skilled with it, it actually makes harder fights easier because the AI doesn't react to machinegun fire the same way it does to incoming missiles. And they can't be distracted by flares. And yeah, the rounds reach further than the scope indicates. I use them a lot for skimping on missiles against 2 or 3-hit targets like bombers, tanks, and many buildings. Or just raking mercilessly through soft ground targets. Pipeline Destruction is an all you can eat buffet for 20mm.

I recently finished replaying the first airforce delta for dreamcast and its alright. But it really suffers from the controller not having enough buttons and sticks and lack of special weapons. It doesn't help that the game gives you the rather overpowered F-15MT real early on which you use until you get the F-22. (which still has the testing probe on the nose funny enough) Because there are no special weapons there isn't a reason to choose anything else besides that it looks cool. (I mean they have the F-20 straight out of area 88) The story is completely forgettable due to zero voice acting and several typos in the text. Though Zan Daas is a silly name for a dictator and Laconia is a cool country name. Call me insane but I do think that this game looks better than the holy trinity ace combat games due to it having COLORS and not having everything be that same drab grey/green/brown color. The enemy planes also all have unique paint schemes for every single level in the game which is something I thought was really cool. The soundtrack is also really good on top of that. (organs, synths and guitar riffs) I also find it funny that while its a shameless rip off of ace combat, ace combat 4 stole the design of megalith from it and ace combat 5 stole the satellite shoot down mission from this game as well. (seriously though, fuck that mission in particular) I would have loved to play the sequels because they go completely off the rails with anime bullshit but I only recently got a PS2 and its much easier to find ace combat than airforce delta. Its 20 10 minute missions long with decent variety and you can beat it in two sittings if you decide to save scum instead of grind missions for more money to re-buy planes you lost. Overall its at least much better than assault horizon which is both impressive and depressing for a game launched in 1999.

Acktually, the debacle in Vietnam was due to the ROE requiring visual identification in order to engage. Thus they could not engage at BVR. What also didn't help was the fact that the ground crews were leaving missiles out on the tarmac in the Vietnam sun all day which cooked them badly. Thus many of them failed to track when they left the rails. It wasn't the gun equipped F4E that turned things around. It was mostly storing missiles in climate controlled bunkers until it was time to fly.

Yes the F-104C was the German variant which the salesman claimed could do close air support despite being designed for high altitude high speed interception. Because of this the Luftwaffe had an average of 2 crashes a MONTH as inexperienced pilots forced the round peg into a square hole. It was known as "the lawn dart" due to the very frequent crashes.
Despite its terrible reputation in Germany; Italy, Taiwan and Japan loved the plane and flew them into the 90s because they used them for their intended purpose. Italy flew them until the 2005 and all the countries only retired them when spare parts ran out.

from what i've been understanding from people more in the know that i am, these are a waste of money, and endangering their crew since you can't use them in cities because they're going to get shitcanned by much cheaper rpg's, and gulf war 1 proved that they get eaten like candies by choppers whenever they try to step out of cities.
so their only use: impress civilian populace.

Along with rockets so superior that they flip around and break up because the alcoholics putting them together ripped out the pitch gyro and forcibly smashed it back into place upside down despite it being built to only fit right side up. Not to mention the space capsule with a bunch of holes drilled in it for no reason.
>Russian tanks require no maintenance
The thing I always see when it comes to attacking western equipment is attributing things that affect all models of every nationality as issues only western counterparts get. It doesn't matter what it is, all tracks need to have their tension adjusted after road marches and no matter if its naturally aspirated, turbo charged, or a gas turbine engine, ALL air filters on every single vehicle down to the last jeep need to be blown out every 2 to 4 hours in high dust conditions. Deep fording kits have also been the standard since the 50s and while they are impressive, they are pretty much never used in real combat because they take hours to set up and make sure everything is totally watertight and in that time you could have just had an armored bridge layer do its thing.
>>16047273
Attack helicopters are only effective if you have air superiority. This much should be obvious as I hope no one here has seriously gotten shot down by a gunship in AC. US/NATO doctrine is built on total air supremacy which allows attack helicopters and MBTs do as they please on the ground war.

I'm playing it and I dunno if it's because I'm playing on hard but damn this game is weird, missiles have this thing where you have to aim them like the gun if you want them to hit, even weirder is that if you hit the magic angle those things will track like QAAMs but if you are a bit off they just don't even track at all
Also it's nearly impossible to hit anything outside of stationary target or large planes with the gun because literally every plane outmaneuvers you when the AI pilots it regardless of what you're piloting
It basically feels like Air Combat on DC with gameplay that doesn't particularly make sense and follows rigid arbitrary rules that are completely obfuscated, although I'll take that over Raider Sphere 4th where it's basically "here have all those missiles that don't track for shit except when you're on the receiving end"
>(seriously though, fuck that mission in particular)
Oh yeah I can see why, if you don't know missiles rearm when they explode this is extremely fucking frustrating

>missiles have this thing where you have to aim them like the gun if you want them to hit
You have no idea how many boomers got themselves killed over Vietnam for not understanding this. Planes are more maneuverable than missiles so you will need to give it lead over the enemy in order for its tiny control surfaces to guide it home. Top gun flight academy was founded just to teach this. That's one of the things that game does better than AC in my mind. The other is the flight model where you need to increase your airspeed the higher you go to avoid stalling.
Guns are very much so the game's weakest point. Yes they give you twice the money for shooting down air targets with guns, and some specific planes can only be unlocked in the store if you shoot them down with guns which I think are neat mechanics, but its nearly impossible to get these gun kills without having to use the "expert" control scheme which removes your easy to reach analogue throttle input on the triggers and moves it to the buttons. On top of that some planes are very bullet spongy. At the end of the game some might even take up to four missiles to down. I feel like if guns destroyed enemy planes in only 6-7 hits then they would be much more useful. They are already hard enough to hit with and it would make the game a lot less of a grind to get some of the stupidly priced planes. (8 MILLION credits, equal to about two complete playthroughs without buying a single plane for a shitty English Electric Lightning? really?) Though they do give you a very nice gunsight that is more accurate to life than AC's, it only appears in first person view which is a bit of a gripe from me.

>That's one of the things that game does better than AC in my mind
I mean it's more realistic, not sure I really like it over the usual AC fare but it works well once you understand it.
> and some specific planes can only be unlocked in the store if you shoot them down with guns
Wait, which ones, I already have 31 planes unlocked just playing normally through hard mode, I hope that doesn't mean I have to shoot down the drones from the satellite mission with guns to unlock them because fuck that noise.
>>but its nearly impossible to get these gun kills without having to use the "expert" control scheme which removes your easy to reach analogue throttle input on the triggers and moves it to the buttons. On top of that some planes are very bullet spongy
Gotta love emulation for that, although I still lose analog throttle.
> I feel like if guns destroyed enemy planes in only 6-7 hits then they would be much more useful
I'm fairly sure there's an hidden stat for gun power going by how many times I shot down those B1s using guns with different planes, but yeah you have to just use missiles to start damaging then switch to the gun for the last bit or you're basically never killing more than a couple planes in a single mission.

You should have unlocked all 31 upon entering new game+ due to clearing it on hard mode, but you can unlock planes like the EEL, Berkut and Mig 1.44 early by shooting them down with guns in levels 3, 18, and 20 respectively. Though the Berkut and Mig 1.44 are unlocked on new game+ on normal and above and the EEL is unlocked on new game+ on hard and above. As for the gun power thing, the end of the level stats screen does count how many rounds hit. So if you do something easy like the first level and use your guns on everything, or just one bomber, theoretically you should have the same amount of hits every time if they were the same. I'll have to try that later. I'm glad you had fun anon.

- No ultra widescreen/21:9 support (which is expected in a nip game)
- No HOTAS support, except for the official Thrustmaster Ace Combat 7 branded HOTAS. Keep in mind Assault Horizon had native HOTAS support.
- Mouse doesn't work on menus
- Issues with 4K not being supported, even though it's suppose to be supported and working. Seems like a bug since Digital Foundry played it at native 4K with no issues as pointed out here >>16065280
- Game has issues with detecting resolutions at the moment.
- Lots of bugs, sometimes the menu lags.
- Gamepad issues, particularly with the XBox controller, despite the game only having XBox controller button prompts. No idea if this is exclusively an XBox 360 controller issue or if it affects the XBox One controller as well.
- Some people say the game crashes after Mission 1. "Fatal Error"
I got a hunch that Denuvo might be the culprit here. Since the review copies reviewers and Digital Foundry got seems to have been working fine. Maybe their versions didn't have Denuvo?

>I really found myself enjoying the Parts system, but the gun auto-fire part is pants-on-head retarded
>it's easy to pass most missions, requires concentration and planning to pass some missions, but it takes actual skill to get S-ranks on most missions
>the game has a good sense of timing, stakes, and danger. Sometimes you absolutely have to focus on accomplishing the mission or else you simply won't finish it on time.
>the plot was AC6-tier, which is to say, it was cheesy, perhaps dangerously so
>I wondered how hard they were going to pander when I saw Stonehenge, but it was used really nicely
>lots of callbacks to the previous games, especially some that were just quietly there with zero attraction drawn to them, like craters here and there and simple geopolitics being taken as given, which means you'll miss out on a lot of the plot coherence if you're a newcomer or just didn't pay attention to AC04 or 5 or Zero
>there's lots of nuggets to kill in multiplayer
>holy fuck that canyon-run mission jesus christ I loved that
>the true villain has always been Osea and the first 10 missions made that comically clear, followed by an emotional response that makes you not want to fly for Osea against Erusea, and that Erusea did nothing wrong, and that the Oseans were responsible for the space debris, and the reason everyone's fucking gone mad by the end of the war is a near-complete shutdown of the world telecom network
>brown-skinned wingman in first mission is called Brownie and that's fucking hilarious
>the game feels like AC04 but dropped into today's modern hardware and after the past 17 years of tech/control advances
Observations:
The game really throws you into the deep end by the fourth mission and tells you to fucking swim.
The gun reticle is the most useless of any of the Ace Combat games, since its predictive validity is nil. You have to gain an instinctive sense of where the bullets will go, forcing you to GET GUD.
The missile sweet spots are more unforgiving, but they act almost exactly as in AC Zero in that they do pop out from underneath you, allowing you to get a few trick shots just as in Zero.
A lot of the content, like the aces or medals, is hidden behind a skill wall, which makes my dick hard.
Holy shit AA guns are a fucking nightmare in this game, I don't ever think I'll get the zero-damage medal because of these nightmare fuckers.
Bad:
<the game feels like AC04 but dropped into today's modern hardware and after the past 17 years of tech/control advances
<every single character could have been more fleshed out
<the campaign really needed to be AC5/6-tier long considering the replayability
<needed more Cossette
<my usual dual-stick USB controller that works perfectly fine for emulation and that I used for recent PS2 emulation wasn't recognized, but thankfully x360ce worked fine. I can't really blame AC7 for this one though
<game relied too much on hordes of zippy physics-fucking drones as a challenge
<Nagase was a welcome surprise but handled so poorly
<honestly most of my negative points are just about the length of the game, it really feels like it should have been 10 missions longer and it feels like Project Aces wanted to do more, but perhaps were held back to prevent it from becoming too ambitious and disjointed.
Overall it feels like AC04 in that it lays a foundation for future games while being a solid game on its own. I really, really hope that we won't need to spend another 12 years waiting for the next game.

The starting camera angle for the previews is retarded and I hate it. The camera moves slowly enough that you need to use the laggy preview to use it, and about half the skins are just re-badging on the tail. The previous games at least made each re-badging have a neat paint scheme.
Come to think of it, Ace Combat 7 feels a lot like an effort by a close-knit team of ~40 who are trying to do the job mandated by the publisher that requires a team of ~120 under the budget of a game that would be fitted to ~30 people. More time wouldn't have helped. But to go bigger would mean losing the magic touch. The magic touch is still there, the scope simply didn't fit the team. It didn't fit the team in Infinity, and the style absolutely didn't fit the team with Assa*lt H*rizon at all.

Which direction did you go down the aircraft tree? I went down the middle since it had a fuck ton of missile upgrades.

But ended up using the MIG-31 a lot while earning the mrp. It's fast as fuck and the pulse laser is very useful in certain missions.
I'm going to try the european fighters next run.

I went for all the speed upgrades. Then I went for all the EML upgrades. So my tree is all over the place.

Holy shit I'm bad in the multiplayer; I can dodge missles well enough but landing them is an entirely different matter. I'm still flying low-ish tier planes since I'm only mission 10 or so in, and I get I'm not going to have an easy time against the top end ones because of the stat difference, but even against similar tier ones I'm struggling to land hits with my missiles. I think in about 3 or 4 games I've managed a giddy 2 kills.
Any tips?

In multiplayer try using aircraft that have SASM's as their special weapon, they're kinda weak missiles but they're almost guaranteed to hit if you get the enemy head on or if you dive down on them from above, or just get them before they have time to turn. The F-15c or especially the Gripen E are probably your best bet. Be sure to equip parts that help your special missiles out. Down at the very bottom of the tree there's some parts the greatly improve various special missile functions. The part that helps out with doing high G maneuvers and reduces stalling helps out a lot too.

Stay away from multiplayer unless you're using the F-22A with QAAMs, or a plane with the EML

Also, try to stick to servers with a price limit, like 2250 or lower.

Any word on mods for this game yet? It's an Unreal Engine game so there should be some autists working for it right?

I'm starting my second playthrough, this time on Ace difficulty and using the Jap voiceover. I had a fun time with the Jap voices when I last played AC5 and I was happy that they kept it in the non-JP version of AC7. I know that AC5's Jap voices make Grimm and Chopper's characterizations way better, and even just the silly moaning noises from Mission 17 become way better.
I'm not even past the initial cutscene this time around and I'm already worried because there were a few lines in the English subtitle that were absolutely not what was being said in the JP voice. Avril's line about hoping her grandpa and friends were flying peaceful skies is something completely different in the Jap version, something to the effect of hoping that he's still flying up there in the blue skies.
I'm really curious about the Jap word that ended up getting translated to "refugees."

>finally get the game
>everything about it feels like an AC game
That's all it took for it to feel worth it. I can't believe it's been this long since AC6 and they didn't forget what the soul of an AC game should be. Here's hoping all this work they've put into the new engine means a new trinity for the new decade.
